Gloria E. Anzaldúa’S Decolonizing Ritual De Conocimiento, Sarah S. Ohmer Jan 2010

Gloria E. Anzaldúa’S Decolonizing Ritual De Conocimiento, Sarah S. Ohmer

Publications and Research

Gloria E. Anzaldúa’s work makes up one of the many Chican@ works that contribute another history, a history repressed by the national discourses on both sides of the border. Influenced by antecedents of U.S. Hispanic Literature who superposed “official” history with another history, Chicano activists had already enacted a retrieval of pre-conquest histories to revive their people’s historical consciousness. As Saldívar-Hull states in “Mestiza Consciousness and Politics: Gloria Anzaldúa’s Borderlands/ La frontera,” the publication of Borderlands/ La Frontera distinguished itself from the Chicano movement’s as it unveiled the curtain that hid the Aztec goddesses and kept aspects of pre-conquest history …

Singular Christianity: Marriage And Singleness As Discipleship, Jana Marguerite Bennett Jan 2010

Singular Christianity: Marriage And Singleness As Discipleship, Jana Marguerite Bennett

Theology and Religious Studies Faculty Publications

If only Paul had not written chapter seven of his first letter to the Corinthians. Christians can fairly easily avoid questions about whether to be married or single when they stick to the Gospels, for Jesus does nothing clear-cut with respect to states of life. He is present at the wedding at Cana in John; in Matthew, he issues a prohibition against divorce; he speaks about being eunuchs for the Kingdom of God, and reconfigures family in his exhortation that the ones who are his disciples are his mother and brothers. Because Jesus does not appear to have much of …

Australia's Other Anzac Day: April 25 On The Western Front, Russell Hardiman, Peta Wellstead Jan 2010

Australia's Other Anzac Day: April 25 On The Western Front, Russell Hardiman, Peta Wellstead

Theology Papers and Journal Articles

this paper is a response to my opportunity to take part in a pilgrimage to the World War I Western Front Battle sites, and graves, as part of a Military History Tour fro Anzac Day 2009. I took part in this tour in order to fulfil a long term ambition to visit, as others in my family have done, the grave of my grandfather's nephew, Frank O'Callaghan, who is buried in Poperinghe, near Ypres in Belgium.

I am also embarking on the publication of Frank's brother Jack's war diary from 1916. Jack was an Ambulance Driver and his reflections on …

The Season Of Advent: A Timeline Of Its Historical Development, Russell Hardiman Jan 2010

The Season Of Advent: A Timeline Of Its Historical Development, Russell Hardiman

Theology Papers and Journal Articles

Beyond the pragmatic benefit of background briefing about the origins and development of the season of Advent, this Timeline is meant to be a pastoral tool to help focus on the deepest meaning of Advent being a unique time for reflection on the many 'comings' of Christ in the past, in the present and in the future.

Recovering The Paschal Mystery: Rediscovery In The Year Of The Priest?, Russell Hardiman Jan 2010

Recovering The Paschal Mystery: Rediscovery In The Year Of The Priest?, Russell Hardiman

Theology Papers and Journal Articles

Any study of the place of the Paschal Mystery in the life of the Church cannot go forward without an explanation of how the preeminence of the Paschal Mystery has been recovered in recent decades on the rediscovery of more ancient texts and re-expressed in the contemporary liturgical books.

Journeying Towards The Heart In The Spirit Of St. Augustine, Glenn J. Morrison Jan 2010

Journeying Towards The Heart In The Spirit Of St. Augustine, Glenn J. Morrison

Theology Papers and Journal Articles

Theology often takes the form of analysis, proofs and thematisations. St. Augustine’s Confessions remind us that this need not always be so. It teaches us that reflections on our feelings and life are sacred ways to communicate to God. It is strange that theologians at times seem to avoid the personal world of sharing in favour of ontological proofs and judgments. We seem to be too interested in theory rather than the spiritual and biblical journey towards faith, hope and love. In this article I want to try to make theology more accessible, and therefore speak find resonance in the …

The Cult Of Saints In The 2nd Millennium, Russell Hardiman Jan 2010

The Cult Of Saints In The 2nd Millennium, Russell Hardiman

Theology Papers and Journal Articles

The sequence of the articles in this issue, serve as something like a mental pilgrimage or exploring the maze. Instead of going arond in circles, this author's hope would be that the major elements linking the pilgrimage of the Church through the centuries, are now unfolding, and in different ways casting their light on what are sometimes called the dark ages.

Book Review: Daniel Sulmasy, A Balm For Gilead: Spirituality And The Healing Arts, Washington, D.C., Georgetown University Press, 2006, Glenn J. Morrison Jan 2010

Book Review: Daniel Sulmasy, A Balm For Gilead: Spirituality And The Healing Arts, Washington, D.C., Georgetown University Press, 2006, Glenn J. Morrison

Theology Papers and Journal Articles

In the tradition of Christian Spirituality, Daniel Sulmasy’s A Balm for Gilead: Spirituality and the Healing Arts reads as a personal witness and exploration of Christian faith. Forwarding biblical, moral, spiritual, pastoral, theological, philosophical and Franciscan perspectives, we discover a quest to journey into the heart of health care professionals to awaken a sense of spirituality and transcendence. Given the empirical, scientific approach of the medical professional, this is not an easy task. None the less, Sulmasy, through a series of meditative chapters, sets out to develop a rational and inspirational way to speak about God, prayer and the mystery …

Dynamical Similarity And The Problem Of Evil, Brad Kallenberg Jan 2010

Dynamical Similarity And The Problem Of Evil, Brad Kallenberg

Theology and Religious Studies Faculty Publications

Discussions of evil commonly fault God for not “doing something.” Defenders of God respond that God had good reasons for not “doing something.” Detractors observe that if a human being can snatch the toddler from the path of the oncoming bus, why does not God snatch the bus from the path of the oncoming toddler? The underlying assumption in such discussions is that God’s “doing something” is similar to humans’ “doing something.”

If human beings bear the image of their Creator as the Abrahamic faiths maintain, it is natural to suppose that divine action is similar to human action. But …
