'A Little Bit Of Love For Me And A Murder For My Old Man': The Queensland Bush Book Club, Robin Wagner Jan 2010

'A Little Bit Of Love For Me And A Murder For My Old Man': The Queensland Bush Book Club, Robin Wagner

All Musselman Library Staff Works

This paper addresses rural book distribution in an era before free public libraries came to Australia. Well-to-do, city women established clubs, which solicited donations of “proper reading matter” and raised funds for the purchase of books for their “deprived sisters” in the Outback. They took advantage of a well-developed rail system to deliver book parcels to rural families. In New South Wales and Queensland they were known as Bush Book Clubs.

Testimonials found in the Clubs’ annual reports provide a snapshot of the hard scrabble frontier life and the gratitude with which these parcels were received. This paper looks at …

Applicative Constructions In Shipibo-Konibo (Panoan), Pilar Valenzuela Jan 2010

Applicative Constructions In Shipibo-Konibo (Panoan), Pilar Valenzuela

World Languages and Cultures Faculty Articles and Research

This article provides a detailed, typologically informed treatment of applicative constructions in Shipibo-Konibo, a Panoan language from Peruvian Amazonia. Shipibo-Konibo has three applicative suffixes: affective (i.e., benefactive or malefactive), dedicated malefactive, and associative. These applicative types are rather common cross-linguistically and hence the language cannot be said to be particularly rich either in terms of number or kinds of applicative constructions. Nevertheless, the Shipibo-Konibo system exhibits certain points of special interest such as the interplay between transitivity and the different applicative construction types, which include a restriction on the dedicated malefactive to combine with transitive verbs only, and the almost …

The Sermon At The Temple And The Sermon On The Mount: A Latter-Day Saint Approach, John W. Welch Jan 2010

The Sermon At The Temple And The Sermon On The Mount: A Latter-Day Saint Approach, John W. Welch

Maxwell Institute Publications

The Sermon on the Mount has had greater influence on the history and character of Christianity than any other text in the Bible. Yet as biblical scholar Hans Dieter Betz has recently lamented, “New Testament scholarship up to the present has offered no satisfactory explanation of this vitally important text.”

The Sermon at the Temple and the Sermon on the Mount, by John W. Welch, offers, for the first time, a thorough Latter-day Saint interpretation of Jesus’ famous sermon. The author relies especially on crucial information and details that only the Book of Mormon can supply.

In New Testament Palestine, …

An Approach To The Book Of Abraham, Hugh Nibley Jan 2010

An Approach To The Book Of Abraham, Hugh Nibley

Maxwell Institute Publications

Originally published in 1957, An Approach to the Book of Mormon is Dr. Hugh Nibley’s classic work on the Book of Mormon. A gifted scholar with expertise in ancient languages, literature, and history, Nibley shows numerous details in the Book of Mormon narrative to be in accord with cultural traits of the Middle East.

He examines Lehi as a representative man of his time, the Jews and the caravan trade, Lehi’s Arab and Egyptian connections, politics in Jerusalem, the pioneer tradition, the Dead Sea Scrolls, the Apocrypha, Lehi’s dreams, proper names, Old World ritual in the New World, the Jaredite …

The Lot Smith Company: Utah Goes To War, Joseph Stuart, Kenneth Alford Jan 2010

The Lot Smith Company: Utah Goes To War, Joseph Stuart, Kenneth Alford

Library Research Grants

The authors take a close look at the cavalry unit that was called to military service on April 28, 1862, at President Lincoln’s request. Their ninety-day period of service was the only unit-level active duty military contribution Utah Territory made during the Civil War. This paper was later published as a book chapter from "Civil War Saints" (2012, published by the Brigham Young University Religious Studies Center and the Deseret Book Company) and can be accessed here.

The Frontier Guardian: Exploring The Latter-Day Saint Experience At The Missouri, 1849–1851, Susan E. Black Jan 2010

The Frontier Guardian: Exploring The Latter-Day Saint Experience At The Missouri, 1849–1851, Susan E. Black

BYU Studies

As the largest Mormon primary source from 1849 to 1851, the Frontier Guardian is crucial to understanding the Latter-day Saint experience at the Missouri River. Until now, historians have extracted only small sections of the paper, such as marriage announcements, obituaries, and advertisements, because of the Guardian's size. Although it is only four volumes, the newspaper contains eighty-one issues, each spanning four pages in length and divided into six columns. This translates into roughly four thousand single-spaced pages on 8.5" x 11" paper. Fortunately, the recent publication The Best of the Frontier Guardian along with its searchable dvd-rom of …

John Cleave's Weekly Police Gazette (1834-6), Francis Place, And The Pragmatics Of The Unstamped Press, Edward Jacobs Jan 2010

John Cleave's Weekly Police Gazette (1834-6), Francis Place, And The Pragmatics Of The Unstamped Press, Edward Jacobs

English Faculty Publications

John Cleave (c.1790-c.1847) was the editor and publisher of, among other works, Cleaves Weekly Police Gazette (1834-6; hereafter WPG), which was by most accounts the best-selling unstamped newspaper of the so-called "War of the Unstamped Press" in the 1830s, one of the first unstamped papers to adopt a broadsheet format like stamped papers, and one of the first to mix political news with coverage of non-political events like sensational crimes and strange occurrences. As Joel Wiener and Patricia Hollis note, less is known about Cleave than about most of the other major figures in the unstamped movement, like William Carpenter, …

Making The Case For Disciplinarity In Rhetoric, Composition, And Writing Studies: The Visibility Project, Louise Weatherbee Phelps, John M. Ackerman Jan 2010

Making The Case For Disciplinarity In Rhetoric, Composition, And Writing Studies: The Visibility Project, Louise Weatherbee Phelps, John M. Ackerman

English Faculty Publications

In the Visibility Project, professional organizations have worked to gain recognition for the disciplinarity of writing and rhetoric studies through representation of the field in the information codes and databases of higher education. We report success in two important cases: recognition as an "emerging field" in the National Research Council's taxonomy of research disciplines; and the assignment of a code series to rhetoric and composition/writing studies in the federal Classification of Instructional Programs (CIP). We analyze the rhetorical strategies and implications of each case and call for continuing efforts to develop and implement a "digital strategy" for handling data about …

Searching For Female Identity In Okamoto Kanoko's Boshijyojyo, Duantem Krisdathanont Jan 2010

Searching For Female Identity In Okamoto Kanoko's Boshijyojyo, Duantem Krisdathanont

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

According to feminist critics, the "Images of Women" in literature created by most female writers lack "authenticity" and "real experience." Susan Koppelman Cornillon, for example, states in "Images of Women in Fiction" (1972) that both male and female authors come in for harsh criticism for their creation of unreal female characters , and female writers are accused of being worse in this respect since they are betraying their own sex (Moi 2002: 42). However, Okamoto Kanoko2 was a feminist writer who shared her real experiences and provided a role model for a positive female identity in the form of main …

Colonialism And Postcolonialism In Science Fiction For Greek Children, Georgios Papantonakis Jan 2010

Colonialism And Postcolonialism In Science Fiction For Greek Children, Georgios Papantonakis

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

In contemporary Greek history we do not encounter the historical and social phenomena of colonialism or post-colonialism with the exception of cases where nations conquered Greek islands; the Dodecanese Islands and the Eptanisa (Seven Islands) were conquered by the English and the Italians, and Cyprus was conquered by the British in the Middle Ages and in contemporary times. These historical situations have been transferred into certain historical Greek fictions in adult literature and in the literature of children and young adult. The focus of this essay is on investigating and depicting colonialist attitudes and post-colonialist situations in science fiction for …

The Creation Of Cultural Heritage: Towards Creating A Modern Thai Architectural Identity, Vimolsiddhi Horayangkura Jan 2010

The Creation Of Cultural Heritage: Towards Creating A Modern Thai Architectural Identity, Vimolsiddhi Horayangkura

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

The Thai Pavilion at the 2010 Shanghai World Expo was basically similar to that of the 1992 World Expo in Spain; both exhibited traditional elements of Thai architecture without any modern transformation. The inappropriate application of past Thai characteristics in contemporary architecture, particularly in buildings of national significance, has been widely criticized. Yet, there have been no obvious architectural solutions to the demand for a modern Thai architectural identity. This research is undertaken with the following objectives: 1) To investigate the appropriateness of current Thai architectural identity in modern society; 2) To seek guidelines for the creation of a modern …

Likay Wik In Bangkok And Their, Benjaporn Deekhuntod Jan 2010

Likay Wik In Bangkok And Their, Benjaporn Deekhuntod

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

This article is a study of Likay Wik, a traditional Thai theatrical drama examined through stage performances and social activities that are shared commonly by Likay performers and the groups of regular audiences. The study aims at acquiring a comprehensive insight into the contemporary life of people in Bangkok society between 2006 and 2007. The conceptual framework is based on Tanabe's "imagining community" (Tanabe 2008). The findings reveal a type of community that belongs to lower class people and their main method of creating a social network to open space for themselves in city living. There is fictive kinship creation …

Grammatical Categories Of Verbs In German And Thai: A Corpus-Based Contrastive Study, Korakoch Attaviriyanupap Jan 2010

Grammatical Categories Of Verbs In German And Thai: A Corpus-Based Contrastive Study, Korakoch Attaviriyanupap

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

This paper presents the results of a contrastive study of grammatical categories expressing temporality and modality through verb forms in German and Thai. In order to discover systematic uses of pre- and postverbal temporal and modal markers in Thai in relation to the German tense and modality system, I analyzed the first German-Thai bidirectional corpus consisting of contemporary German and Thai short stories and their translations into the other language. Although German and Thai express temporality differently, certain conceptual relationships between German tenses and Thai aspects can be identified. In terms of modality, Thai has grammaticalized two different sets of …

Thai Gender Ideology: A View From Representations Of Social Actors In Crime News Headlines, Phennapha Klaisingto, Wirote Aroonmanakun Jan 2010

Thai Gender Ideology: A View From Representations Of Social Actors In Crime News Headlines, Phennapha Klaisingto, Wirote Aroonmanakun

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

This study examines the linguistic structure used for uncovering gender ideologies through crime news headlines. It's based on the idea that languages represent reality and different linguistic choices indicate different points of view of reality. Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) (Fairclough 1990,VanDijk 1995, Simpson 1993) is used in this study. The main objectives of the study are 1) to study the differences of representation between male and female social actors (Van Leeuwan 2008) in crime news headlines and 2) to study power relations, gender identities and the reproduction of patriarchal society through crime news headlines. Samples of 1,815 crime news headlines …
