Welcome To The Land Of Super-Service: A Survivor's Guide. . .And Some Questions, Phyllis E. Vanslyck Jan 2010

Welcome To The Land Of Super-Service: A Survivor's Guide. . .And Some Questions, Phyllis E. Vanslyck

Publications and Research

Community college faculty accept high service demands, in addition to heavy teaching loads, as essential to tenure and promotion. Much of service work is uncompensated or very modestly compensated. If historically service was a substitute for scholarship, this is no longer the case. And the culture of our college community does not encourage a discussion of service concerns. This article poses questions for faculty, for department chairs, for administrators regarding how best to support the multiple demands being made of community college faculty, particularly women.

Terrific Biographies For Teens: Do They Exist?, Amanda Mackay Jan 2010

Terrific Biographies For Teens: Do They Exist?, Amanda Mackay

The Utah English Journal

About the time I began my career as a junior high English teacher, I started reading a lot of biographies. I felt empowered as I read real stories of real people overcoming real obstacles. Recalling my first experience with this genre, I couldn’t help wondering why I didn’t read more of them when I was younger. I realized that I’d rarely seen my students choosing to read biographies either. As a teacher, I became curious about my students’ experiences with biographies. Had my students even read biographies? If so, what did they think of the genre? What would make them …

Identidades Por Negociar: La Presentación De La Piel Humana En La Fotografía De René Peña., Ilka Kressner

Languages, Literatures and Cultures Faculty Scholarship

This paper analyzes several works by Cuban photographer René Peña from the point of view of his depiction of the human skin. Peña, one of Cuba’s most renowned photographers, with an impressive list of exhibits in Cuba, the US, and Europe, became known as an artist of sharp and formalistic black and white photographs, mostly focusing on the human body. Through his idiosyncratic staging and estranging juxtapositions on the photographic paper, Peña’s work is never solely artistic: it challenges for instance the binary opposition between black and white, the concept of fixed sexualities, or the process of aging.

In many …

Exploring The Imaginary Domain: An Investigation Of The Interplay Of Alterity, Literature, And The Process Of Self-Definition, Matthew Brandon Ittig Jan 2010

Exploring The Imaginary Domain: An Investigation Of The Interplay Of Alterity, Literature, And The Process Of Self-Definition, Matthew Brandon Ittig

Wayne State University Dissertations

This qualitative study explored how six secondary English students imagined definitions and redefinitions of themselves through encounters with self and other within the context of semiotic engagements with literature. A conceptual lens for exploring these imaginary spaces was fashioned by the braiding together of current trends from philosophy, critical theory, feminist theory, literary theory, and semiotic theory. These braided theories guided the research design. This conceptual frame allowed an investigation of the ways the interplay of alterity, the radical difference between self and other, and literature study created imaginary domains where the students could fashion definitions and re-definitions of self. …

The Effects Of Gestalt And Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy Group Interventions On The Assertiveness And Self-Esteem Of Women With Physical Disabilities Facing Abuse, Cilene Susan Adam Rita Jan 2010

The Effects Of Gestalt And Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy Group Interventions On The Assertiveness And Self-Esteem Of Women With Physical Disabilities Facing Abuse, Cilene Susan Adam Rita

Wayne State University Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine the differential effects of Gestalt and Cognitive-Behavioral group therapy interventions on assertiveness and self-esteem among women with physical disabilities facing abuse. The eleven women, who met the study criteria, were randomly assigned to one of two experimental conditions, Gestalt Therapy (GT) and Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) group interventions. The Demographic Questionnaire (Adam Rita, 2009) documented personal characteristics of the participants. The criterion instruments were: a) RAS (Rathus, 1973), and b) CFSEI-2 (Form AD, Battle, 1992) measuring assertiveness and self-esteem respectively and were administered pre-and-post treatment. The research was conducted over a period of …
