Leibniz And The Wind Machines, Andre Wakefield Jan 2010

Leibniz And The Wind Machines, Andre Wakefield

Pitzer Faculty Publications and Research

Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz visited the Harz Mountains more than thirty times and spent almost three full years there between 1680 and 1686. His aim was to install wind machines for draining the Harz silver mines. Despite Leibniz’s best efforts—his commitment bordered on obsession—the enterprise ultimately failed. There is still disagreement about exactly what happened. Biographers and historians have mostly asserted that Leibniz, a universal genius dedicated to the greater good of science and society, was thwarted by stubborn mining officials. Historians of mining, on the other hand, have generally sided with the “professionals” in the Hannoverian mining administration. This essay …

On Music Angels: God Only Knows, David M. Kirkham Jan 2010

On Music Angels: God Only Knows, David M. Kirkham

BYU Studies

The trek from my office at the Air Force Academy history department to the faculty parking lot was long enough--about a ten-minute walk--sufficient time for some substantive thinking. One winter evening in about 1992, as I made the walk, my Comparative Revolutions course weighed on my mind. As I pondered how I might introduce the next day's discussion on causes of revolutions, I climbed into my 1987 red Dodge Colt more out of habit than deliberation. At the turn of the ignition key, the radio's boom broke my reverie and jarred me back to the reality of my immediate surroundings. …

Élan Vital, Sharon Mealey Jan 2010

Élan Vital, Sharon Mealey

CGU MFA Theses

My art explores the inner qualities of life, focusing on adaptability and resiliency. I am interested in the mysterious vital force philosophers call élan vital that animates human beings. I investigate the transitory nature of life where it intersects with élan vital. My paintings accommodate the ephemeral and the perpetual. The Contribution Of Domain Specificity In The Highly Modular Mind, Axel Barcelo Aspeitia, Angeles Erana, Robert Stainton Jan 2010

The Contribution Of Domain Specificity In The Highly Modular Mind, Axel Barcelo Aspeitia, Angeles Erana, Robert Stainton

Philosophy Publications

Is there a notion of domain specificity which affords genuine insight in the context of the highly modular mind, i.e. a mind which has not only input modules, but also central ‘conceptual’ modules? Our answer to this question is no. The main argument is simple enough: we lay out some constraints that a theoretically useful notion of domain specificity, in the context of the highly modular mind, would need to meet. We then survey a host of accounts of what domain specificity is, based on the intuitive idea that a domain specific mechanism is restricted in the kind of information …

The Impact Of Evangelical Revivals On Global Mission: The Case Of North American Evangelicals In Brazil In The Nineteenth And Twentieth Centuries, Edward L. Smither Jan 2010

The Impact Of Evangelical Revivals On Global Mission: The Case Of North American Evangelicals In Brazil In The Nineteenth And Twentieth Centuries, Edward L. Smither

Liberty Baptist Theological Seminary (1973-2015)

The aim of the current article is to show that an important element behind the establishment of evangelical missions to Brazil – particularly during the pioneering stages – was evangelical revival, especially that which occurred in North America during the nineteenth century. Following a brief introduction to the general relationship between eighteenth- and nineteenth century revivals and evangelical missions, I shall endeavour to support historically the commonly accepted, yet often unsubstantiated, correlation between such movements of revival and mission. Firstly, I will show the significant paradigm shift in missional thinking, which took place in the nineteenth century, as North American …

Visual Testimony: Lee Miller’S Dachau, Sharon Sliwinski Jan 2010

Visual Testimony: Lee Miller’S Dachau, Sharon Sliwinski

Data and Test Instruments

This essay examines images of the liberation of Dachau concentration camp taken by American war correspondent and photographer Lee Miller. Miller’s work is mobilized as an optic through which to grasp the shock of confronting the Nazi camps. Her images are read as a form of visual testimony. That is, although they fail to provide a transparent view of what occurred in the Nazi lagers, they are nevertheless inscribed with all that the photographerdid not knowof the events to which she bore witness. The nature of this strange unintelligibility is what the author pursues: the visual inscription of the unspeakable …

Harm Or Mere Inconvenience? Denying Women Emergency Contraception, Carolyn Mcleod Jan 2010

Harm Or Mere Inconvenience? Denying Women Emergency Contraception, Carolyn Mcleod

Philosophy Publications

This paper addresses the likely impact on women of being denied emergency contraception (EC) by pharmacists who conscientiously refuse to provide it. A common view—defended by Elizabeth Fenton and Loren Lomasky, among others—is that these refusals inconvenience rather than harm women so long as the women can easily get EC somewhere else nearby. I argue from a feminist perspective that the refusals harm women even when they can easily get EC somewhere else nearby.

Morally Justifying Oncofertility Research, Carolyn Mcleod Jan 2010

Morally Justifying Oncofertility Research, Carolyn Mcleod

Philosophy Publications

Is research aimed at preserving the fertility of cancer patients morally justified? A satisfying answer to this question is missing from the literature on oncofertility. Rather than providing an answer, which is impossible to do in a short space, this chapter explains what it would take to provide such justification.

Contextualism In Epistemology And The Context Sensitivity Of 'Knows', Robert Stainton Jan 2010

Contextualism In Epistemology And The Context Sensitivity Of 'Knows', Robert Stainton

Philosophy Publications

The central issue of this paper is whether contextualism in epistemology is genuinely in conflict with recent claims that ‘know’ is not in fact a context sensitive word. To address this question, I’ll first rehearse three key aims of contextualists and the broad strategy they adopt for achieving them. I then introduce two linguistic arguments to the effect that the lexical item ‘know’ is not context sensitive: one from Herman Cappelen & Ernie Lepore, one from Jason Stanley. I find these and related arguments quite compelling. In particular, I think Cappelen & Lepore (2003, 2005a) show pretty definitively that ‘know’ …

Simulation-Based Definitions Of Emergence, Alan Richard Baker Jan 2010

Simulation-Based Definitions Of Emergence, Alan Richard Baker

Philosophy Faculty Works

One approach to characterizing the elusive notion of emergence is to define that a property is emergent if and only if its presence can be derived but only by simulation. In this paper I investigate the pros and cons of this approach, focusing in particular on whether an appropriately distinct boundary can be drawn between simulation-based and non-simulation-based methods. I also examine the implications of this definition for the epistemological role of emergent properties in prediction and in explanation.
