The Emerging Church And Global Civil Society: Postmodern Christianity As A Source For Global Values, Aaron Stuvland Jan 2010

The Emerging Church And Global Civil Society: Postmodern Christianity As A Source For Global Values, Aaron Stuvland

Faculty Publications - Department of History and Politics

The subject of this essay is the relationship of religion, as a source of values, to the construction of a more robust global values discourse. A specific focus is how religion, specifically Christianity, is influenced by postmodernism to better inform normative thinking on global civil society (GCS). To this end, I argue that religion's role in the global values discourse is enhanced by a dynamic process of adaptation and transformation as part of the larger process of globalization. 1 Significantly, religion is not simply back as the "re-enchantment" and "de-secularization" literature contends but also manifesting in fundamentally new and potentially …

What Does The Mob Want Lot To Do In Genesis 19:9?, R. Christopher Heard Jan 2010

What Does The Mob Want Lot To Do In Genesis 19:9?, R. Christopher Heard

Religion Division Faculty Scholarship

Most English Bible translations render [Hebrew text A-B] in Gen 19:9 with some variant of “Stand back!” However, a very few interpreters recommend a translation along the lines of “Come closer!” more in keeping with the typical gloss on [Hebrew text A]. A detailed study of the syntax and semantics of both [Hebrew text A] and [Hebrew text B], as well as constructions similar to [Hebrew text A-B] demonstrates the strength of the minority suggestion.

Joanna Newsom Covers In The Blogosphere, Shayne Pepper Jan 2010

Joanna Newsom Covers In The Blogosphere, Shayne Pepper

Communication, Media and Theatre Faculty Publications

Joanna Newsom’s 2004 album, The Milk-Eyed Mender, was released at a time when music blogs were reaching new levels of popularity within certain sections of music and online communities. During this time, songs from nearly every high profile indie rock release seemed to find their way onto music blogs (often, to the chagrin of the music industry, far before slated release dates). Newsom’s songs were no exception – she was often something of a hot topic on blogs like Stereogum, My Old Kentucky Blog, Brooklyn Vegan, Gorilla vs. Bear, and numerous others. Over a relatively short time these music blogs …

A Horny Dilemma: Sex And Friendship Between Students And Professors, Andrew Kania Jan 2010

A Horny Dilemma: Sex And Friendship Between Students And Professors, Andrew Kania

Philosophy Faculty Research

Few people would think it odd if they saw Pat, a philosophy professor at a small liberal arts college, having lunch in the dining hall with Sam, an undergraduate student in one of Pat's classes. Many might pause for thought, however, if they saw Pat and Sam having dinner at a fancy restaurant downtown. And if they found out the next day that the couple had gone back to Pat's place and made love all night long, most would be scandalized. To be told that it was not a one night stand, that Pat and Sam were in a long-term …

Tune In, Turn On: The Novel, The Family, And The Plug-In Drug, Kathleen Fitzpatrick

Pomona Faculty Publications and Research

This article, forthcoming (January 2010) in an online casebook from Dalkey Archive Press on Curtis White’s Memories of My Father Watching TV, explores the peculiar relationship between the novel and its representations of television, arguing that this novel significantly complicates the anxious representations that I explored in The Anxiety of Obsolescence, by focusing on the subversive potential that television presents within the family.

Beyond Entertainment: Music And Health Care In Urban Parks, Bussakorn Binson Jan 2010

Beyond Entertainment: Music And Health Care In Urban Parks, Bussakorn Binson

Journal of Urban Culture Research

This study is a recent review of the use of music for healthcare in urban parks in five districts of Bangkok, Thailand. It was found that music played a central role in many activities supportive of physical and mental health. This paper will discuss the role of music in supporting the health of Bangkok's residents through its use in a variety of public park programs. Some examples are group aerobics, yoga and various genres of dance. The research found that although these activities are well attended and beneficial to health, there is a lack of unified, supportive policies for them. …

Using Facebook To Teach Rhetorical Analysis, Jane Fife Jan 2010

Using Facebook To Teach Rhetorical Analysis, Jane Fife

English Faculty Publications

The attraction of Facebook is a puzzle to many people over the age of thirty five, and that includes most college faculty. Yet students confess to spending significant amounts of time on Facebook, sometimes hours a day. If you teach in a computer classroom, you have probably observed students using Facebook when you walk in the room. Literacy practices that fall outside the realm of traditional academic writing, like Facebook, can easily be seen as a threat to print literacy by teachers, especially when they sneak into the classroom uninvited as students check their Facebook profiles instead of participating in …

Burdens Of Disclosure: A Pastoral Theology Of Confidentiality, Virginia R. Morgan Jan 2010

Burdens Of Disclosure: A Pastoral Theology Of Confidentiality, Virginia R. Morgan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Receiving confidential disclosures can create burdens for pastoral care providers. This dissertation presents a study of pastoral confidentiality and the burdens associated with receiving confidential disclosures based on interviews with thirteen pastoral providers, a review of historical, legal and pastoral care literature. A thematic analysis of interviews identified three types of burdens associated with receiving confidential disclosures: 1) professional burdens associated with clarifying norms and standards for pastoral confidentiality in light of collegial, denominational and congregational norms; 2) ethical burdens created when the ethical value of pastoral confidentiality comes into conflict with another significant ethical value; and 3) structural burdens …

Climate Change And Indigenous Peoples In Latin America, Amy C. Rademacher Jan 2010

Climate Change And Indigenous Peoples In Latin America, Amy C. Rademacher

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This research focused on the detrimental effects of climate change on indigenous peoples in Latin America. Indigenous peoples throughout the region tend to live subsistence livelihoods, which tie them closely to their land and the surrounding environment. This close relationship often means that indigenous peoples acutely experience the effects of climate change and are more susceptible to its negative outcomes than other populations. Further, indigenous peoples in the region lack the mitigation and adaptation capacities to deal with damaging climatic effects.

This research was designed to view the impacts of climate change on indigenous peoples through a human rights framework, …
