A Note from the Author: Writing has been a way for me to process emotions. I wrote the poems in this collection in the early 90's which was a trans-formative period in my life. Current friends are surprised at the dark nature of this collection because they do not reflect the person I am now. One must travel through the darkness to recognize the light. I hope readers can find some meaning in them. I hope you enjoy the poetry. I ask you to take notice of the Creative Commons license. This license allows you to download my poetry and …

Marriage And Ministry: Conflicts And Occupational Conflicts In Wesley’S Life And Ministry, Tony Headley
Marriage And Ministry: Conflicts And Occupational Conflicts In Wesley’S Life And Ministry, Tony Headley
The Asbury Journal
In this article, the author explores John Wesley's perspectives on marriage and how these views related to his practice of ministry. Specifically, the author examines Wesley's developmental journey from believing he could not marry to actually contracting a marriage with Mary Vazeille. Following exploration of Wesley's perspectives on marriage, the author discusses these issues in relation to two observed patterns in his significant intimate relationship with Sophy Hopkey, Grace Murray and Mary Vazeille; namely that for the most part, Wesley cultivated these relationships out of travel and illness. The author concludes that even though Wesley moved from a position of …

The Influence Of Social And Linguistic Factors On Spanish Dialect Contact In The U.S.: A Look At Mexican And Cuban Spanish In Lansing, Michigan, Gabriel G. Alfaraz
International Journal of the Linguistic Association of the Southwest
An increase in the number of Spanish-speaking Latinos in the U.S. provides opportunities for contact of diverse varieties of Spanish. This paper examines the role of factors including age. education. linguistic network composition, and length of residence in shaping the outcome of contact between groups of Spanish speakers in Lansing. Michigan. A sample of 52 Mexicans and Cubans was used to examine two linguistic variables in spoken data collected in sociolinguistic interviews that included picture-elicitation tasks and grammatical acceptability tasks, following the idea that variation is a reflection of grammaticality (Fasold and Preston 2007), to probe sensitivity to out- and …
Unexpected Case Assignment And Preposition Doubling In Pronoun Coordination In Spanish, Carlos Gonzalex-Vergara, Hernan Labbe G.
Unexpected Case Assignment And Preposition Doubling In Pronoun Coordination In Spanish, Carlos Gonzalex-Vergara, Hernan Labbe G.
International Journal of the Linguistic Association of the Southwest
The following paper is based on the observation of two related phenomena in Spanish. First, when two personal pronouns acting as prepositional objects are coordinated, they are usually constructed by repeating the preposition before each member of the coordination. Secondly, when this does not happen, the second member of the coordination does not appear in oblique case (which would be expected to happen through government), but it appears in nominative case. This can be clearly appreciated in the coordination of pronouns that display morphological case. The purpose of this paper is to explain these phenomena within the Minimalist Program. The …

Las Interrogativas Hendidas En Español: ¿Cómo Es Que Se Usan?, Javier Rivas, Esther Brown
International Journal of the Linguistic Association of the Southwest

Dance House: European Models Of Folk Music And Dance Revival In Urban Settings, Svanibor Pettan
Dance House: European Models Of Folk Music And Dance Revival In Urban Settings, Svanibor Pettan
Journal of Urban Culture Research
At its inception in Hungary in the 1970s, the gatherings of young urban musicians at which they performed rural dance music for urban audiences had clearly political connotations. These gatherings, named Dance House or "Táncház" in Hungarian, were meant to be an alternative to the Soviet-style choreographed stage presentations of "folklore". As the model spread to other European countries, the political overtones became either different or irrelevant as the gatherings became largely recognized as both learning and entertaining events for urbanites. This presentation first contextualizes the appearance of the Dance House in the words of some of its creators and …

Method To The Madness - Why North Korea Wants The Bomb, Genevieve Faulkner
Arts Conference Papers
Recently the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) under the leadership of Kim Jong-Il has been pursuing nuclear weapons with renewed vigour. The DPRK is a country with severe development challenges which initially makes the pursuit of nuclear weapons in the face of international censure appear illogical. However, looking at the nuclear decision making process of the DPRK, and hence Kim Jong-Il in his role as supreme leader, a logical explanation can be identified. By understanding the relationship between the political elite and the military elite it becomes evident that this co-dependent relationship is the core reason behind the DPRK’s …
The Concept Of Health: Beyond Normativism And Naturalism, Richard Hamilton
The Concept Of Health: Beyond Normativism And Naturalism, Richard Hamilton
Philosophy Papers and Journal Articles
Philosophical discussions of health and disease have traditionally been dominated by a debate between normativists, who hold that health is an inescapably value-laded concept and naturalists, such as Christopher Boorse, who believe that it is possible to derive a purely descriptive or theoretical definition of health based upon biological function. In this paper I defend a distinctive view which traces its origins in Aristotle's naturalistic ethics. An Arisotelian would agree with Boorse that health and disease are ubiquitous features of the natural world and thus not mere projections of human interests and values. She would differ from him in rejecting …

Yaoi As Fanwork: Cultural Appropriation In Modern Japanese Culture, Yu Ishikawa
Yaoi As Fanwork: Cultural Appropriation In Modern Japanese Culture, Yu Ishikawa
Journal of Urban Culture Research
This paper aims to discuss the generation of Yaoi fanwork, one of the forms of cultural appropriation in modern Japanese culture. The concept of appropriation as used in this paper refers to a cultural practice of the people belonging to a subculture, who redefine the dominant meaning to suit their own purpose. Yaoi fanwork is defined as a female-oriented production that focuses on the depiction of male bonding in popular media and develops it into a romantic relationship. Through this cultural practice, female fans adapt and appropriate dominant texts. This paper investigates how Yaoi fans subvert authorship and canonicity by …
