Quantification Of Artistic Style Through Sparse Coding Analysis In The Drawings Of Pieter Bruegel The Elder, James M. Hughes, Daniel J. Graham, Daniel N. Rockmore

Recently, statistical techniques have been used to assist art historians in the analysis of works of art. We present a novel technique for the quantification of artistic style that utilizes a sparse coding model. Originally developed in vision research, sparse coding models can be trained to represent any image space by maximizing the kurtosis of a representation of an arbitrarily selected image from that space. We apply such an analysis to successfully distinguish a set of authentic drawings by Pieter Bruegel the Elder from another set of well-known Bruegel imitations. Chiefly five diaries kept by Werst from 1918 to 1970. 1918 diary describes her family’s auto trip from Washington state to California to work as agricultural laborers. 1961 diary relates her bus trip from Washington state to Kentucky and back. Also includes letters to Werst from family members related to the care of her son, 1934-1935; account book from an Olympic Peninsula boarding house, 1904-1905.

Simple as the title "Why Study Mary?" may sound, Father François Rossier situates Marian studies in the broader context of Scripture and the Christian tradition. Making special reference to the Marianist tradition and its intimate connection with the University of Dayton's spirit and vision, he sees in Mary the "origin of theological reflection." It is a reflection that is documented not in a book, but in Mary's person. Being the "first theologian," she has a "concretizing function." She makes Jesus "tangible, concrete, accessible to our senses," but she also helps us "to get a sense of God's action and presence …
