Valkyrie-A Film Review, Barry Maxfield Feb 2010

Valkyrie-A Film Review, Barry Maxfield

Swiss American Historical Society Review

It is uncommon for a historical fact to be so compelling that Hollywood would make a movie of it. It seems fictionalized history i~ the product that sells, with Saving Private Ryan being one such example it was a blending of fact and fiction into a blockbuster seller. Histor~ has accounts which are riveting yet overlooked. However, for writer Christopher McQuarrie and Na than Alexander one of those stories camt to light, a story that could be put on celluloid and sold.

What Is ‘Catholic Enlightenment’?, Ulrich Lehner Feb 2010

What Is ‘Catholic Enlightenment’?, Ulrich Lehner

Theology Faculty Research and Publications

Recent research has demonstrated not only the existence of a variety of Enlightenments, but also the importance of the religious aspect to this worldwide process. In particular, special interest has been paid to the long-neglected Catholic Enlightenment, which entailed many strands of thought by Catholic intellectuals and political leaders who attempted to renew and reform Catholicism from the middle of the 18th to the early 19th century. This renewal was an apologetic endeavor designed to defend the essential dogmas of Catholic Christianity by explaining their rationality in modern terminology and by reconciling Catholicism with modern culture. The Catholic Enlightenment was …

Refinement Of A Chemistry Attitude Measure For College Students, Xiaoying Xu Feb 2010

Refinement Of A Chemistry Attitude Measure For College Students, Xiaoying Xu

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This work presents the evaluation and refinement of a chemistry attitude measure, Attitude toward the Subject of Chemistry Inventory (ASCI), for college students. The original 20-item and revised eight-item versions of ASCI (V1, V2, V3 and V3.1) were administered to different samples. The evaluation for ASCI had two main foci on the psychometric properties: reliability and validity. Both psychological theory and factor analysis techniques were applied to guide instrument refinement. Evidence for good reliability and validity was established for ASCI V2 score interpretation. The two-factor correlated structure was supported by confirmatory factor analysis. The two subscales, intellectual accessibility and emotional …

An Analysis Of The Publishing Activity Of Keston Institute In The Context Of Its Last Three Years Of Operation In Oxford (2003-2006), Davorin Peterlin Feb 2010

An Analysis Of The Publishing Activity Of Keston Institute In The Context Of Its Last Three Years Of Operation In Oxford (2003-2006), Davorin Peterlin

Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe

By way of introduction, the study will give an outline of the history of Keston Institute (KI). It will then identify the period of three years (2003-2006) as the period during which KI attempted to integrate in the academic life of the Oxford University under the new director. The period ended with the effective closing down of the institution in its historical shape and with regard to many of its previous activities. On the surface this decision had to do with increasing financial difficulties, but it is the author's contention that on another level it was an outcome of a …

Assessing The Effectiveness Of The Roaring Branch Bmp Retrofit Using Macroinvertebrate Bioassessment, James L. Banning Feb 2010

Assessing The Effectiveness Of The Roaring Branch Bmp Retrofit Using Macroinvertebrate Bioassessment, James L. Banning

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Using benthic macroinvertebrates to measure stream health has been widely used and accepted around the world. Macroinvertebrates are resident monitors of chronic impairment in a stream since they are relatively sessile and most commonly respond to disturbance by drift but can recolonize a restored stream reach very quickly. This study tested the effectiveness of macroinvertebrate metrics developed through the Rapid Bioassessment Protocol (RBP) to detect changes in stream integrity as the result of placement of a best management practice (BMP), installed on a tributary of Roaring Branch, located in Columbus, Georgia. The BMP was designed to attenuate flow to reduce …

World Heritage In A Changing Climate; The Potential For A Global Laboratory, Caithleen Daly Feb 2010

World Heritage In A Changing Climate; The Potential For A Global Laboratory, Caithleen Daly

Conference papers

This paper presents ongoing research, partly undertaken on behalf of ICOMOS Ireland’s Sub-Committee on Climate Change and the Department of Environment Heritage and Local Government, into the effects of climate change on World Heritage (and proposed World Heritage) in Ireland. World Heritage sites in Ireland have been key to the formation of a cutting edge climate change monitoring project. The outlined monitoring scheme should form a legacy for the future, producing quantifiable data over the coming century, vital in the assessment of climate change impacts on cultural heritage. In turn this will enable the development of appropriate and sustainable management …
