FAMILY AFFAIRS was a free, twice-a-month, social activities newsletter for the GLBTQI (gay/lesbian/bisexual/trans/queer/intersex) community, sent out around the 1st and 15th of each month. It covered the State of Maine only. The list was begun and maintained for many years by Jean Vermette in Bangor, and later operated by Zack Paakkonen of Portland. Over the years it evolved from a social activities newsletter into a business directory, classified ad service, and community bulletin board.

Degrees Of Emotion: Judicial Responses To Victim Impact Statements, Mary Lay Schuster, Amy Propen Feb 2010

Degrees Of Emotion: Judicial Responses To Victim Impact Statements, Mary Lay Schuster, Amy Propen

English

Emotional standards and hierarchies in the courtroom may affect judicial reactions to victim impact statements. Based on judicial conversations and courtroom observations in two judicial districts in Minnesota, we suggest that judges contrast emotion with reason in order to maintain control of their courtrooms; when faced with emotional expressions in victim impact statements, judges appreciate expressions of compassion and tolerate expressions of grief but are uncomfortable with expressions of anger. These judicial responses to emotional expression, however, must be contextualized; for example, the judges we spoke with often articulated different reactions to impact statements given by victims of sexual assault, …

Learning The Meaning Of Verbs: Insights From Quechua, Ellen Courtney Feb 2010

Learning The Meaning Of Verbs: Insights From Quechua, Ellen Courtney

Selected Works Temporary Series

Largely based on observations of English-speaking children, investigators have proposed constraints on verb learning, e.g., syntactic bootstrapping, the principle of uniqueness, and innate semantic-conceptual categories. Children produce overgeneralization errors as they acquire verb meaning, and data from some languages reveal an intriguing asymmetry: children use intransitive verbs transitively, while seldom using causative-transitive verbs intransitively. This study presents experimental evidence corroborating the author's earlier finding that Quechua-speaking children’s overgeneralization errors observe the same asymmetry. The transitive variants of change-of-state verbs were elicited from 30 Peruvian children, aged 2;8-4;11. The ensuing discussion considers how Quechua-speaking children recover from this pattern of overgeneralization …

The Battle Of Murten, Albert Winkler Feb 2010

The Battle Of Murten, Albert Winkler

Swiss American Historical Society Review

Frequent warfare was a harsh political reality in central Europe in the late Middle Ages as ambitious states tried to extend their power and influence by attacking and subjugating other territories. As a result of this frequent aggression, success on the battlefield was necessary for the survival and independence of many nations and peoples, including the Swiss Confederation. The most critical threat to the existence of the Swiss alliance in the fifteenth century was the invasion in1476 by Charles the Bold, Duke of Burgundy, one of the most powerful rulers in Europe. In two stunning victories, Granson (Grandson in German), …

The Ruse Of Clarity, Ian Barnard Feb 2010

The Ruse Of Clarity, Ian Barnard

English Faculty Articles and Research

This essay interrogates the concept of “clarity” that has become an imperative of effective student writing. I show that clarity is neither axiomatic nor transparent, and that the clear/unclear binary that informs the identification of clarity as a goal of effective student writing is itself unstable precisely because of the ideological baggage that undergirds its construction. I make this argument by finding the traces of composition’s insistence on student writers’ clarity in the attacks on the writing of critical theorists.

Dissecting Departure: A Study Of Student Withdrawal Surveys At Regis University, Stacey M. Green Feb 2010

Dissecting Departure: A Study Of Student Withdrawal Surveys At Regis University, Stacey M. Green

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

This study examined the cases of all traditional-aged undergraduate students departing Regis College, a division of Regis University, a private, Jesuit institution in Denver, Colorado, during the 2008-2009 academic year. Data from student withdrawal surveys were analyzed to decipher the reasons why students leave Regis College. Research unearthed that the current withdrawal survey form provides insufficient and misleading information about students' reasons for leaving Regis College. 20 percent of students left for medical reasons, with 16 percent departing for unknown reasons and 15 percent for financial reasons. These data indicated that modifications to the withdrawal survey, the withdrawal process, and …

The Experience Of The 756th Tank Battalion In World War Two: A Microcosm, Scott Millenbach

Senior Theses

December 7, 1941, "a day which will live in infamy," was the moment that the United States was plunged into the largest conflict that the world had ever seen. The sovereignty of the United States was being threatened at two ends of the globe by tyrannical leaders on the continent of Europe and the islands of the Pacific. In the years to come, the U.S. would have to fight to stop the spread of Emperor Hirohito's army in the Pacific and Hitler's Nazi Wermacht in Europe. It would take all the resources our mighty country could muster and the fighting …

Versions Of Pygmalion In The Illuminated Roman De La Rose (Oxford, Bodleian Library, Ms. Douce 195): The Artist And The Work Of Art, Marian Bleeke Feb 2010

Versions Of Pygmalion In The Illuminated Roman De La Rose (Oxford, Bodleian Library, Ms. Douce 195): The Artist And The Work Of Art, Marian Bleeke

Department of Art and Design Faculty Publications

The article focuses on the manuscript Douce 195, which is a late fifteenth-century copy of the poem "Roman de la Rose," that contains nine images for the poem's Pygmalion myth digression. According to the article, the manuscript was produced by the illuminator and court artist Robert Testard for Duke Charles d'Orleans. The differences between the story of Pygmalion as it is told in the text of the "Roman de la Rose" and in Testard's miniatures in the manuscript are explored. It is argued that the Pygmalion sequence represents Testard's reflections on the changing status of the …

In Case You Missed Them: Books By Martin Jacques And Yasheng Huang, Howard French

China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012

During his first trip to China recently, Barack Obama was excoriated by pundits for his meekness on a host of issues, from Tibet to exchange rates to human rights. Newspaper commentary in the United States went on endlessly about the curtailment of American influence in an age where a fast-rising China has become this country’s main creditor. The event that supposedly crystallized all of this was the American-style town hall meeting the president had planned, but which the Chinese government appeared to control. In the end, Obama was limited to a stilted forum with an audience of carefully screened and …
