Pastoral Care For Saints And Sinners, H. Peter Swanson

On Constructive-Engagement Strategy Of Comparative Philosophy: A Journal Theme Introduction [Abstract], Bo Mou Feb 2010

On Constructive-Engagement Strategy Of Comparative Philosophy: A Journal Theme Introduction [Abstract], Bo Mou

Comparative Philosophy

In this journal theme introduction, first, I explain how comparative philosophy as explored in the journal Comparative Philosophy is understood and how it is intrinsically related to the constructive engagement strategy. Second, to characterize more clearly and accurately some related methodological points of the constructive-engagement strategy, and also to explain how constructive engagement is possible, I introduce some needed conceptual and explanatory resources and a meta-methodological framework and endeavor to identify adequacy conditions for methodological guiding principles in comparative studies. Third, as a case analysis, I show how the constructive-engagement reflective practice bears on recent studies of Chinese and comparative …

A Generalized Framework For Automatic Code Partitioning And Generation In Distributed Systems, Viswanath Sairaman Feb 2010

A Generalized Framework For Automatic Code Partitioning And Generation In Distributed Systems, Viswanath Sairaman

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In distributed heterogeneous systems the partitioning of application software to be executed in a distributed fashion is a challenge by itself. The task of code partitioning for distributed processing involves partitioning the code into clusters and mapping those code clusters to the individual processing elements interconnected through a high speed network. Code generation is the process of converting the code partitions into individually executable code clusters and satisfying the code dependencies by adding communication primitives to send and receive data between dependent code clusters. In this work, we describe a generalized framework for automatic code partitioning and code generation for …

A Conversation On “Confucius” With Daniel A. Bell, Alec Ash Feb 2010

A Conversation On “Confucius” With Daniel A. Bell, Alec Ash

China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012

The film Confucius premiered in Beijing last month, to a backdrop of controversyover Avatar being dropped from cinemas to make way for more patriotic fare. I saw the film last weekend with Chinese student friends, and we couldn’t hold back the occasional open snigger: in a word, Confucius is cornier than maize. It also raises interesting questions about the selective interpretation and political uses that modern China makes of its ancient Confucian tradition.

I put some of these questions to Daniel A. Bell, Professor of Philosophy at Tsinghua University, who has written widely on Confucianism (including pieces for The China …

You Can't Take It With You, Otterbein University Theatre And Dance Department

2009-2010 Season

Grandpa Vanderhof and his wacky family, the Sycamores, have been happily living their zany lives in his house by Columbia University in New York for many years. This family (and their friends) are a madcap group of eccentrics, marching to the beat of their own drum, with pride and joy. Their hobbies include collecting snakes, building fireworks in the basement, writing a myriad of plays that never get published, and taking ballet lessons. Things like stress, jobs, and paying taxes to the government are for other people, not for them! But when practical young Alice Sycamore becomes engaged to her …

Six Takes On Martin Jacques, Jeffrey Wasserstrom Feb 2010

Six Takes On Martin Jacques, Jeffrey Wasserstrom

China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012

I have a commentary that’s just appeared online at time.com (it’s in print as well in Time Asia’s February 8 issue), in which I focus on the distinction between what I call “Big China Books” (with “titles that cry out to be put in bold type”) and the quite different works that take a “worm’s eye” rather than “bird’s eye” view of the country, and which usually avoid predictive assertions. I state my preference for the latter genre, which I call forays into “scholarly reporting,” taking my cue fromAndrew Ross.

While I mention several books falling into each category, the …
