A landscape restoration plan for the 45-acre historic estate of Massachusetts governor and United States senator, Christopher Gore and his wife Rebecca, recommended archaeological investigations to identify the location, character, and integrity of Gore-period features that could potentially be included in restoration efforts. Investigations began in 2004, focusing on better known landscape elements including the carriage drive, carriage house foundation, greenhouse, vegetable and flower gardens, and the site of the grapery/fruitwall (Smith and Dubell 2006). The 2008 investigations focused on the new site of the carriage house (reported under separate cover) and on lesser known elements of the estate that …

Women In The Down Economy: Impacts Of The Recession And The Stimulus In Massachusetts, Randy Albelda, Christa Kelleher
Women In The Down Economy: Impacts Of The Recession And The Stimulus In Massachusetts, Randy Albelda, Christa Kelleher
Publications from the Center for Women in Politics and Public Policy
The “Great Recession” is affecting everyone in one way or another, but not everyone is affected in the same way. Women’s and men’s work (both in and out of the labor force) still differs, so we can expect that the economic crisis has had a distinct impact on women as well as their families. This policy brief discusses how the down economy has differentially impacted women and men in Massachusetts and the gendered implications of federal stimulus spending. It also identifies potential opportunities to promote gender equality as the United States, and Massachusetts in particular, attempt to move beyond the …

Identifying the specific complexities and historical context of post-Mao Chinese literary women's rhetoric, along with ways they have been misread, the author argues in general that Western feminist critics need to be cautious about applying their concepts to non-Western women's literature.

Razorback, Frank Wheeler
Department of English: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
This thesis contains the first five chapters of the novel titled RAZORBACK, written by Frank Wheeler Jr. It is a crime drama, set in the Arkansas Ozark Mountains. The main character, Conrad, is a reclusive woodworker living in the back woods. His estranged wife, Jennifer, pays him a visit after five years with little contact between them, and asks him to kill someone for her. She claims it is a matter of personal safety; the man she has been seeing socially has become violent and threatening. After some consideration, Conrad agrees. He has his own agenda, however, and he finds …

Protestants Protesting Protestantism: 20th Century Experiments In Monasticism, George Faithful
Protestants Protesting Protestantism: 20th Century Experiments In Monasticism, George Faithful
Collected Faculty Scholarship
Contrary to popular belief, there have often been monastic sisterhoods and brotherhoods in Protestantism. In Germany, Möllenbeck, Loccum, and Marienberg all contained cloisters that embraced the Lutheran Reformation but retained much of their monastic practice. That such groups are relatively unknown may reflect the ambivalence of those in positions of power toward potential holdovers from Catholicism. Protestant monasticism has never been normative; therefore, its occurrence might best be understood as an implicit critique of the mainstream confessions. For the purposes of this paper I will not define monasticism as a vague and flexible lifestyle of contemplation and asceticism, as have …

Mercy, Mercy, Mercy: An Ethic Of Reconciliation, David Hutchinson
Mercy, Mercy, Mercy: An Ethic Of Reconciliation, David Hutchinson
Doctor of Ministry
The author of this dissertation contends that reconciliation is the goal of divine and human action. The problem addressed is that human attempts at reconciliation are incomplete. Reconciliation can be defined with careful attention to the use of the words "mercy," "justice," and "truth." The disse1iation's thesis is that the South African expe1ience of mercy provides a reconciliation model for relationship, conversation, and ministry in Portland, Oregon. Chapter 1 introduces the challenge of addressing the problem through an account of a Restorative Listening Project on Gentrification meeting. The challenge is to move from words to action. Chapter 1 then describes …

Culture, Acculturation, And Social Capital: Latinos And Use Of Mental Health Services, Edward Mcfield Jr.
Culture, Acculturation, And Social Capital: Latinos And Use Of Mental Health Services, Edward Mcfield Jr.
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Studies suggest that the prevalence of mental illness in Latinos is similar to that of other groups; however, Latinos are less likely than non-Latino whites to access mental health services, and when they do, the quality of care is poor. To better understand the factors that influence use of mental health services among Latinos, a descriptive, cross-sectional, correlational study was conducted (N= 340; 219 non-consumers and 121 consumers), which examined the association between social capital, acculturation, cultural beliefs or explanatory models of illness, stigma, need, and mental health service use. An innovative integrative model drawing from Andersen's Behavioral …

The Nida Brain Disease Paradigm: History, Resistance And Spinoffs, David T. Courtwright
History Faculty Research and Scholarship
This article examines ‘the NIDA paradigm’, the theory that addiction is a chronic, relapsing brain disease characterized by loss of control over drug taking. I critically review the official history of the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) paradigm and analyze the sources of resistance to it. I argue that, even though the theory remains contested, it has yielded important insights in other fields, including my own discipline of history.
"The Future In The Instant": Posthumanism(S) In Early Modern English Drama, Farrah Lehman
"The Future In The Instant": Posthumanism(S) In Early Modern English Drama, Farrah Lehman
Department of English: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
This dissertation examines prominent points of intersection between early modern English theatrical practices and posthumanist, post-cybernetic new media theory as a means of interrogating assumptions about “media narratives” (here, the development of dramatic blank verse), proto-Brechtian anti-illusionism, and sensory encounter related to the late sixteenth-and early seventeenth century stage. The arguments presented here in part rely on the work of three present-day critics: Mark B.N. Hansen, N. Katherine Hayles, and Brian Massumi, all of whom explore posthumanist theory while addressing possibilities for posthumanist practices within the humanities. Examining a wide range of texts, including plays and pro-and anti-theater tracts, initially …
Literary Studies From Hermeneutics To Media Culture Studies, Siegfried J. Schmidt
Literary Studies From Hermeneutics To Media Culture Studies, Siegfried J. Schmidt
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In his article "Literary Studies from Hermeneutics to Media Culture Studies" Siegfried J. Schmidt discusses aspects of hermeneutics, the systemic and empirical (contextual) approach to literature and culture, radical constructivism, and his postulates for the field of media culture studies. Schmidt describes his understanding of the transformation of literary studies towards media culture studies in the context of overall developments of society. His argumentation with regard to move from hermeneutics to media culture studies offers the postulate that research ought to be empirical and contextual in order to foster intuition, invention, innovation, and socially relevant scholarship. He concludes that the …

Anti-Nationalism In Scott's Old Mortality, Montserrat Martínez García
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In her article "Anti-Nationalism in Scott's Old Mortality," Montserrat Martínez García examines national identity through war in Walter Scott's Old Mortality in order to illustrate that war was one of the main catalysts of nationhood and show, simultaneously, the disparity between the institutional and the popular attitude toward war. Martínez García pays attention to the way Scott portrayed war and identity and to what extent this literary representation coincided with or faced the uniform ideology of nationalism. Based on the historical background of the seventeenth and nineteenth centuries, Martínez García analyses Scott's novel to uncover focus his narrative of cracks …
