The Temple Of Jerusalem: Past, Present, And Future, John M. Lundquist, Jared W. Ludlow
The Temple Of Jerusalem: Past, Present, And Future, John M. Lundquist, Jared W. Ludlow
BYU Studies
John M. Lundquist is the Susan and Douglas Dillon Chief Librarian of the Asian and Middle Eastern Division of the Humanities and Social Sciences Library within the New York Public Library. He has written many books and articles on diverse subjects for both general and Latter-day Saint audiences. The title of this book--The Temple of Jerusalem: Past, Present, and Future--captures well the scope of Lundquist's work. He addresses the role of the Jerusalem temple in ancient Israelite society, its role in the contemporary world, and the prophecies and apocalyptic notions about its future. The book mostly focuses on …
Christ The Mariner, Clinton F. Larson
Mere Mormonism, Thomas B. Griffith
Mere Mormonism, Thomas B. Griffith
BYU Studies
Devotees of C. S. Lewis will recognize that I have adapted the title of my remarks from Mere Christianity, his classic exposition of the fundamentals of the Christian faith. An hour lecture is not the forum to attempt for Latter-day Saint Christianity what Lewis achieved for traditional Christianity. In any event, I lack the skill to pull that off. What follows is something much more modest. I will speak from my own observation and try to identify what is at the heart of the Mormon experience in an attempt to provide an introduction to the faith. A disclaimer is …

The Vision That You Have . . . Augurs Well For The Development Of Still Better Things: The Role Of Accreditation In Securing The Future Of Brigham Young University, 1921–1928, J. Gordon Daines Iii
BYU Studies
In 1921, Franklin S. Harris was appointed president of Brigham Young University, During his first visit to campus, Harris articulated his vision for the future of the young institution. He said, "The President of the Church Commission of Education, and all who have anything to do with Church schools are determined to make this 'the great Church University.'" President Harris had a different vision about what it meant to be "the great Church University" than did his predecessors. While they had focused on the importance of teacher education, Harris believed that the institution needed to equip students with the skills …
Faith And Inquiry, Justin F. White
Faith And Inquiry, Justin F. White
BYU Studies
My wife's uncle recently, and somewhat smugly, said something to the effect, "It's too bad you're studying philosophy (or perhaps any subject) at BYU since you only get one perspective." For the most part, I've found this is simply not true. I've found professors and students not nearly as homogeneous as often portrayed. Though I agree with my wife's uncle that we should engage in dialogue with those of differing opinions, since there are, of course, disadvantages when only a single perspective is represented on a topic, I'd like to focus on one potential positive interpretation of the sameness he …
Robert J. Matthews And The Rlds Church's Inspired Version Of The Bible, Thomas E. Sherry
Robert J. Matthews And The Rlds Church's Inspired Version Of The Bible, Thomas E. Sherry
BYU Studies
Matthews' developing reputation as a scholar, along with his persistent interest in and efforts to gain access to the original New Translation manuscripts, occurred during a period in RLDS Church history that included evolving views relative to the publication, assessment, and use of the Inspired Version. Those developments, along with advances in archival preservation of the original manuscripts, resulted in the phone call with RLDS Church Historian Richard Howard, allowing Matthews to study the documents. Ironically, as the RLDS Church's interest in and commitment to Joseph Smith's revelations decreased, they rose to new prominence in the LDS Church.

Cissie Fairchilds, Women In Early Modern Europe, 1500—1700, Fiona Williamson
Research Collection College of Integrative Studies
Cissie Fairchilds offers a comprehensive synthesis of the main categories associated withgender history in early modern Europe. In particular, she draws attention to the uneasy relationship between patriarchal theory and the real lived experience of women who negotiatedand subverted masculine worlds during their everyday social interactions. Fairchilds has notintended this book to be a work of original research, but a textbook to present and reflectupon the major themes of gender history over the last few decades. As such, it is written in anengaging and accessible style, with clearly defined sections enabling the reader to understandthe aims and intent of each …
Friendship And Fidelity: An Historical And Critical Examination, Joshua Walter Schulz
Friendship And Fidelity: An Historical And Critical Examination, Joshua Walter Schulz
Dissertations (1934 -)
Aristotle considers friendship the greatest external good, one integral to the attainment of happiness. However, while Aristotle limits distrust to what he calls imperfect forms of friendship, subsequent philosophers have stressed our uncertainty regarding the benevolence, beneficence and loyalty we may expect of friends. They do so in part because overcoming this uncertainty requires the exercise of the virtues of trust and loyalty if our friendships are to survive intact.
For example, insofar as Aquinas holds that we cannot scrutinize the wills of others - thus inviting uncertainty regarding their present and future conduct - he argues that friendship requires …

Tradition And Innovation: Extremeñan Connections And Collaborations, Jo Farb Hernandez
Faculty Publications
The writer discusses the collaboration between California artist Sam Hernández and the Moreno León family from Extremadura, Spain, who create tinajas, monumental ceramic storage vessels. While Hernández approached this collaboration with admiration for the elegance of the traditional tinaja, and respect for the Moreno León ceramists, the innovation in superimposing his own images led to a totally new set of sculptures that, though linked to his earlier oeuvre, are markedly different from it. By recontextualizing the tinaja into a contemporary narrative through the overlay of his chosen subject matter, he shifted the collaboration into a new territory, as, at the …

The Kora And Korafolaw: A Treatise On The Musical Instrument And Those Who Play It, William Ridenour
The Kora And Korafolaw: A Treatise On The Musical Instrument And Those Who Play It, William Ridenour
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
“The kora is what they play in heaven” a friend once told me. I agreed with him, easily. Ever since I first heard the kora played in the United States, my interest in it and the culture that produced it has deepened. Being able to carry out research on it has been a blessing and a pleasure.
All of my fieldwork was done in Bamako, the capital of Mali between April 15th and May 7th 2010. I spent most of my time in the company of the venerable jeli and korafola Dialy Mady Sissoko, who more or less adopted me …
El Muralismo: El Papel De Los Murales En La Lucha De Los Organismos Sociales En La Ciudad De Buenos Aires = Muralism: The Role Of Murals In Social Organizations, Loren Crosier
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
There are an ever-growing number of social movements in the city of Buenos Aires, and a number of these groups are using art in the streets in an attempt to “recuperate” urban neighborhoods. Muralism is an art form and a concept that has a long legacy of militancy and vanguardism. This paper will address the breach between art as a product and a social reality by analyzing the meaning of muralism. What is the role of the muralist and what is the social function of the mural? Or more importantly, what is the social function a social organization or movement …

Lithic Technology And Obsidian Exchange Networks In Bronze Age Sardinia, Italy (Ca. 1600-850 B.C.), Kyle P. Freund
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The Sardinian Bronze Age (Nuragic period) and the factors which created and maintained an island-wide identity as seen through the presence of its distinctive nuraghi have received considerable attention; however the amount of research directly related to the stone tools of the era has been relatively limited despite the wealth of knowledge it is capable of yielding. This thesis hopes to contribute to Sardinian archaeology through the study of ancient technology, specifically obsidian lithic technology, by combining typological information with source data gleaned from the use of X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (XRF). These data are integrated with statistical analyses breaking down …

Development And Testing Of A New C-Based Algorithm To Control A 9-Degree-Offreedom Wheelchair-Mounted-Robotic-Arm System, Ana Catalina Torres Rocco
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
A Wheelchair-Mounted Robotic Arm (WMRA) was designed to aid people with limited or no upper-limb usage to accomplish activities of daily living (ADLs). The primary objective of this research was to enhance the performance of the WMRA by improving the communication protocols and functions between the hardware and software used for its control.
Previously, the control algorithm of the robotic arm was tested in simulation and in the physical arm. These implementations required a combination of Matlab and C++ language and introduced some software instability under Windows operating system. To improve the performance of the WMRA, the programs for hardware …
Stochastic Modeling And Statistical Analysis, Ling Wu
Stochastic Modeling And Statistical Analysis, Ling Wu
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The objective of the present study is to investigate option pricing and forecasting problems in finance. This is achieved by developing stochastic models in the framework of classical modeling approach.
In this study, by utilizing the stock price data, we examine the correctness of the existing Geometric Brownian Motion (GBM) model under standard statistical tests. By recognizing the problems, we attempted to demonstrate the development of modified linear models under different data partitioning processes with or without jumps. Empirical comparisons between the constructed and GBM models are outlined.
By analyzing the residual errors, we observed the nonlinearity in the data …

I'Ve Fallen In Love With Every One Of You..., Kayleigh L. Speck
School of Art, Art History, and Design: Theses and Student Creative Work
Photographs best show and describe the world, capturing a split second in time without necessarily providing the viewer with any sort of explanation or answer as to why something looks the way it does. Although the camera captures images of the “real,” it has the ability to tell lies. It changes our perception of space, the color of light, and the way things look overall. This is the reason I have chosen this medium; I want to see what my world looks like in a photograph.
Through these photographs of the every day lives of my subjects and myself, I …
Am I Here?, Carla M. Potter
Am I Here?, Carla M. Potter
School of Art, Art History, and Design: Theses and Student Creative Work
My interest in art and figuration has its roots in a childhood where ballet classes and performing were my first love. This work is about an accumulation of experience that relates to that rich formative time in my life, so I choose a format of presenting the figure that reflects that stage of my life. I make small-scale narrative sculptures that show me at various ages with objects that are emblematic of my experiences at those times. These items, ranging from a child’s car seat to the lacy veil from First Holy Communion, additionally represent those societal institutions intended to …

Alien Encounters And The Alien/Human Dichotomy In Stanley Kubrick‘S 2001: A Space Odyssey And Andrei Tarkovsky‘S Solaris, Keith Cavedo
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The alien encounter has long been a defining and popular subject of science fiction cinema. However, Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) and Andrei Tarkovsky's Solaris (1972) are interrogative, complex, and distinct artistic accomplishments that stand apart from and above the conventional science fiction film. 2001 and Solaris not only represent but complicate the alien/human dichotomy; in the end, they destabilize the dichotomy and even suggest a radical synthesis of the dichotomous elements. 2001 and Solaris further emphasize epistemological and specifically anthropocentric limitations when it comes to understanding the alien or attempting to make sense of the alien encounter. …
