A Butterfly Effect: The Impact Of Marriage And Family Therapy Training On Students' Spouses, Carla M. Dahl, Mary L. Jensen, Jane L. Mccampbell Apr 2010

A Butterfly Effect: The Impact Of Marriage And Family Therapy Training On Students' Spouses, Carla M. Dahl, Mary L. Jensen, Jane L. Mccampbell

Faculty Publications

This qualitative study examines the impact of mar- riage and family therapy (MFT) training on the

marriages of trainees. Analysis of data from 18 spouses of alumni from a training program in an evangelical Protestant seminary found participants reporting mostly negative impacts related to time and finances, both negative and positive impacts related to role changes and adjustments, and mostly positive impacts related to marital communication. The additional contribution of this study has to do with the report of an overwhelmingly positive impact of systemic, integrative MFT training on the student’s faith as observed by their spouse and on the …

Description:

The Jewish Community Center on Cumberland Avenue in Portland, Maine was the site of United Service Organization (USO) social events, held regularly from at least October 1943 to September 1946. Most of the servicemen (and some women who were nurses) who attended events at the Community Center were in the Navy, stationed on shops docked or anchored in Casco Bay. These social events were sometimes held out on the islands. Although hosted by the Jewish Community Center, anyone was welcome, regardless of religion. Eleanor Edison Taft saved this ledger listing the names of attendees at the USO events when …

Crises Of Whiteness And Empire In Colonial Indochina: The Removal Of Abandoned Eurasian Children From The Vietnamese Milieu, 1890–1956, Christina Firpo Apr 2010

Crises Of Whiteness And Empire In Colonial Indochina: The Removal Of Abandoned Eurasian Children From The Vietnamese Milieu, 1890–1956, Christina Firpo

History

From 1890–1956, non-governmental welfare agencies worked with the French colonial government in Indochina to remove Eurasian children, who had been abandoned by their French fathers, from their Vietnamese mothers and the Vietnamese cultural environment. In an era marked by historical exigencies, perceived threats to white prestige, and inherent challenges to the colonial patriarchy, such children were believed to be a threat to colonial security and white prestige. The racial formations of abandoned Eurasian children in colonial Indochina changed repeatedly in response to these threats. Drawing from the rhetoric of racial sciences and led by anxieties over changes colonial security, French …

Coming To Terms, Leslie Smith Apr 2010

Coming To Terms, Leslie Smith

Theses & Honors Papers

The purpose of this thesis is to analyze the roles of resistance and acceptance in my life through creative nonfiction. In the six essays serving as my thesis, collectively entitled Coming to Terms, I have approached my life from different angles in order to both identify and explore topics of control and conflict, realization and acceptance. These originate in various degrees from my family, my schooling, and from society at large, but most importantly, from my own interpretation of what it is to grow up and assert myself, accepting the past in order to change the future: "If you're cognizant …

Creating New Expressions Of Worship Gatherings Within Existing Churches, Eric K. Baker Apr 2010

Creating New Expressions Of Worship Gatherings Within Existing Churches, Eric K. Baker

Doctor of Ministry

It is my claim that multiple expressions of worship gatherings must be created to connect generations to Jesus. Worship "services" are the face of many churches, but according to recent studies many people are leaving the American church at a rapid rate.1 Many issues surrounding the decline of the American church exist, but my claim is that many young adults feel disconnected from many Sunday morning worship experiences. Many have attempted to fix this problem by creating evangelistic ministry teams, by moving churches from the mega church model to the house church model, and even by removing the mass gathering …

Never The Same: Using Short-Term Missions As A Tool For Spiritual Formation, Thomas G. Moon Apr 2010

Never The Same: Using Short-Term Missions As A Tool For Spiritual Formation, Thomas G. Moon

Doctor of Ministry

It is estimated that over one and a half million American Christians will travel abroad this year on a short-term mission project, and that doesn't include the number who travel on similar domestic trips. However, in spite of the phenomenal growth, the modern short-term missions movement continues to suffer from what could only be described as an identity crisis. Many pastors, educators, and mission leaders continue to be engaged in missiological soul-searching, dialoging about the fundamental questions concerning the value and purpose of short-term mission trips. The insistence on using the same language to describe and discuss both long-term and …

What Lies Beneath? Contemporary Notions Of Multiculturalism And Their Impact On Irish And American Immigrant Communities, Amanda Nelson Apr 2010

What Lies Beneath? Contemporary Notions Of Multiculturalism And Their Impact On Irish And American Immigrant Communities, Amanda Nelson

American Studies Honors Projects

This thesis explores the contested contemporary political and social uses of the term "multiculturalism" in American and Irish rhetoric and public policy, and interrogates how its multiple uses have influenced immigration law and created tensions among immigrant enclaves and communities in both countries. The concept of multiculturalism is an overused explanation for massive waves of immigration and the various multi-ethnic and multi-national communities that inhabit local and global communities. Many individuals assume multiculturalism's popularity in contemporary discourse is a positive indication of less racist and more culturally inclusive societies. The term is often treated as a political and/or social agenda …

Time And Temporality: A Heiddegerian Perspective On Mctaggart's A-Series, Zachary Dotray Apr 2010

Time And Temporality: A Heiddegerian Perspective On Mctaggart's A-Series, Zachary Dotray

Philosophy Honors Projects

J.M.E. McTaggart first employed the now-standard distinction between the A- an B-series in an attempt to prove the unreality of time. I argue that McTaggart's analysis of time requires that a subject exist within the A-series, and as such lends itself to a Heideggerian conception of time, viewed both through Being and Time and Heidegger's interpretation of Aristotle's theory, that necessitates a 'personal' temporality in order to make 'world-time' intelligible. I also suggest that Heidegger's temporaility, formulated as a non-successive unity grounded in Dasein's existential constitution as being-in-the-world, circumvents McTaggart's preemptive charge of circularity and therefore also avoids the conclusion …

Gender & Leadership: Do Human Resource Policies And Practices Affect A Woman’S Ascent In Organizations?, Arielle Langlais Apr 2010

Gender & Leadership: Do Human Resource Policies And Practices Affect A Woman’S Ascent In Organizations?, Arielle Langlais

Honors Projects in Management

As more women began assuming leadership roles in organization, researchers established a number of consistencies in the promotion of women into the upper ranks of an organization. Jonsen, Maznevski, and Schneider have taken a look at these differences in their study, “Gender Differences in Leadership: Believing is Seeing.” In this study they examine three ways in which organizations view women and the Human Resource policies and programs that support these views. Based on this and other research, I conducted a study in hopes of assessing the validity and existence of these views as they are evident in Southern New England …

Assuming Multiple Roles In The Development Of A Reader’S Theater Course, Nolan Weil Apr 2010

Assuming Multiple Roles In The Development Of A Reader’S Theater Course, Nolan Weil

Languages, Philosophy, and Communication Studies Faculty Publications

This article was inspired by an exploration of readers’ theater as the focus of a semester long topics course, given as one of five courses required of full-time students enrolled in a university intensive English program. The article briefly describes how the author conceived the course as a strand within the context of a broader program. It provides a brief characterization of readers’ theater. It offers a cursory overview of theory and research attesting to the effectiveness of readers’ theater (and the underlying principle of repeated reading) as a tool for promoting reading fluency. It appropriates terms used to describe …
