The Sunshine State's Golden Fruit: Florida And The Orange, 1930-1960, Scott D. Hussey
The Sunshine State's Golden Fruit: Florida And The Orange, 1930-1960, Scott D. Hussey
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Neither indigenous nor exclusive to Florida, the orange has nevertheless become an international symbol for the state. This connection between product and place appears in cultural materials regarding Florida. In fact and fiction the orange has operated as metaphor and synecdoche for an Edenic Florida. This thesis analyzes how the orange came to represent a "natural" Florida through the conflation of the commercial product with the state's history by way of political and marketing puffery. A litany of citrus advertisements, tourist ephemera, and historical associations regarding the state acknowledged and expanded the connections between the orange, improved health, and Florida. …
Polarization Of Galvanic Point Anodes For Corrosion Prevention In Reinforced Concrete, Margareth Dugarte
Polarization Of Galvanic Point Anodes For Corrosion Prevention In Reinforced Concrete, Margareth Dugarte
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The polarization performance of two types of commercial galvanic point anodes for protection of reinforced steel around patch repairs was investigated. Experiments included measurement of the polarization history of the anode under constant current impressed by galvanostatic circuits and in reinforced concrete slabs. The tests revealed, for both types of anodes, a potential-current function (PF) indicating relatively little anodic polarization from an open circuit potential at low current levels, followed by an abrupt increase in potential as the current approached an apparent terminal value. Aging of the anodes was manifested by a continually decreasing current output in the concrete tests, …

The Roundtable session at this year’s annual meeting of the Association for Asian Studies (AAS) in Philadelphia was titled “Against Amnesia: History, Memory and the Role of Public Intellectuals in 21st Century China.” A mix of scholars from China and North America were scheduled to report and discuss, but at the last minute our featured speaker, Ms. Cui Weiping (崔卫平) of the Beijing Film Academy, could not attend. She was prevented from leaving China for the roundtable even though she had been specially invited by the AAS and had her passport, US visa, and air tickets in hand. She was …

Dear Friends: Welcome to our redesigned CLAGSNews! As you can see, CLAGS is going through a number of chances, both stylistic and substantial. We've moved CLAGSNews to a mostly electronic format, in part to save precious resources, but also to take advantage of the endless possibilities of web-based text. We'll also be updating our logo and the CLAGS website to make it a real resource for LGBT Studies.

Focusing On Black Queer Writing: Clags At The Fire & Ink Cotillion Iii In Austin Texas, Shawn(Ta) Smith-Cruz
Center for LGBTQ Studies (CLAGS)
On October 8-11th, 2009, an historic event occurred in Austin, Texas. The Fire & Ink III: Cotillion brought together LGBT writers and artists of African descent from around the nation and beyond. In 2002, its founding year, Thomas Glave, editor of Our Caribbean: A Gathering of Lesbian and Gay Writing from the Antilles (Duke University Press) and author of The Torturer's Wife (fiction), provided the keynote, later published in both his essay collection, Words to our Now as well as the Summer 2003 issue of Callaloo (literary journal) under the name: "Fire and Ink: Toward a Quest for Language, History …

An Excerpt From The 2009 Kessler Lecture: Ties That Bind: Familial Homophobia And Its Consequences, Sarah Schulman
Center for LGBTQ Studies (CLAGS)
Despite the emphasis on gay marriage and parenthood that has overwhelmed our freedom vision, how gays and lesbians are treated IN families, is far more influential on the quality of individual lives and the larger social order, than how we are treated AS families. Tonight I will try to articulate how and why systems of familial homophobia operate and more importantly, how they can be changed.

Can We Really Make A Difference?, Michael Atten '12
Can We Really Make A Difference?, Michael Atten '12
2010 Spring Semester
Over the course of history, which type of person makes a bigger impact, an active manipulator fighting to stay alive or a passive observer floating along in the sea of life?
Slaughterhouse Five, by Kurt Vonnegut, and Maus, by Art Spiegelman, answered this question differently. Billy Pilgrim, the main character of Slaughterhouse Five, was so passive and uncaring about his fate that he effectively came “unstuck” in time. Conversely, Vladek Spiegelman of Maus put up a fight at every opportunity and never willingly traveled along in life. However, neither character made a difference on the events of the Second World …

Implementation Of College In-State Tuition For Undocumented Immigrants In New York, H. Kenny Nienhusse, Kevin J. Dougherty
Implementation Of College In-State Tuition For Undocumented Immigrants In New York, H. Kenny Nienhusse, Kevin J. Dougherty
Policy Documents
This qualitative case study explored how New York’s in-state tuition policy is being implemented for undocumented immigrants at two community colleges within the City University of New York (CUNY) system. This investigation discovered that CUNY has devoted its own resources in the development of workshops, training sessions, manuals, and centers to assist in the implementation of this measure. Also, this study found that — while these colleges and CUNY overall have made a commitment towards the successful implementation of this policy — undocumented immigrants still face barriers in obtaining in-state tuition rates. The objective of this investigation is to under-stand …

Preaching The Seventh Commandment: "You Are Not To Steal", Mary Jane Haemig

In his catechisms, Martin Luther spoke directly about the economic life of his time. Christian preachers are invited to do the same. Only when the commandments are preached in full force—in both their positive and negative admonitions—can we know what forgiveness really means.

The prophets insisted on economic justice because they understood the Lord to be “a God of justice.” If justice is part of the very character of God, God's people must also embody justice.

A Communion That Is Holy: A Gospel Economy, Dirk G. Lange

The sacrament of Holy Communion trains us in a gospel economy. Receiving from God, we are taught to give. Freed from an obsessive attraction to temporal things, but also from a pious repulsion of them, we are drawn into a holy communion with God, neighbor, and material goods.

African & African American Studies Senior Theses
All my life, I have been a fan of music. My earliest memories include my family singing aw we gathered for the holidays. My mom and dad have always had music playing in our home and I grew up enjoying the sounds of not only my own generation of singers but their generation as well. No matter where I go, I have music with me. If it is songs downloaded to my iPod, cellphone, in the car or on my computer, I can instantly access all of the latest songs along with the classics like Sinatra or Bennett. In fact, …

Ex Aliquo Nihil: Nietzsche On Science And Modern Nihilism. Acpq, 84-2 (Spring 2010): 231-256., Babette Babich
Articles and Chapters in Academic Book Collections
This essay explores the nihilistic coincidence of the ascetic ideal and Nietzsche’s localization of science in the conceptual world of anarchic socialism as Nietzsche indicts the uncritical convictions of modern science by way of a critique of the causa sui, questioning both religion and the enlightenment as well as both free and unfree will and condemning the “poor philology” enshrined in the language of the “laws” of nature. Reviewing the history of philosophical nihilism in the context of Nietzsche’s “tragic knowledge” along with political readings of nihilism, willing nothing rather than not willing at all, today’s this-worldly and very planetary …

History Of Petroleum Engineering At Montana Tech, Leo Heath, Debbie Todd
Petroleum Engineering
In January, 2010, the Petroleum Engineering department at Montana Tech moved into a new building, the Natural Resources Building, to start a new chapter in the history of the program on campus. Occupying a new building is a positive event, and it coincides with a surge of student enrollment which is prompted by industry needs and world energy demand. This time of new facilities and growing student numbers leads to the question of what the future has in store for the department. It also leads to reflection about where the department has been in the past. This history is a …
