Lirasniara, The Sung Language Of Southwest Maluku (East-Indonesia), Aone Van Engelenhoven Apr 2010

Lirasniara, The Sung Language Of Southwest Maluku (East-Indonesia), Aone Van Engelenhoven

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

This paper discusses a highly endangered sung style in Maluku Barat Daya along the lines of Sasse's (1992) theory of language death and focusses on structural consequences, the speech behaviour, and the external setting of this oral tradition. It is concluded that if it really has existed and not only in local folklore, Lirasniara must have been a jargon that was replaced by Malay. Only because it already occurred in sung texts during the latter's introduction prevented its total disappearance from the region thus far. The fear remains that in the process of the modernization of Indonesia, it may undoubtedly …

A Statement On The Biblical Doctrine Of Creation, Seventh-Day Adventist Theological Seminary Apr 2010

A Statement On The Biblical Doctrine Of Creation, Seventh-Day Adventist Theological Seminary

Books

First we formulate our understanding of the biblical account of the Creation, Fall, and the New Creation, then turn to issues regarding the interface between science and faith. We do so from the perspective of faith in a personal God as contrasted with more impersonal approaches to the divine nature. Our purpose is to facilitate constructive dialogue regarding differing worldviews such as a recent biblical Creation model contrasted with an ancient life on earth model. The document concludes by focusing on the proper stewardship of Creation.

Exergy Modeling To Compare Engineered Products To Biological Systems For Sustainable Design, Richard D. Stokes Jr. Apr 2010

Exergy Modeling To Compare Engineered Products To Biological Systems For Sustainable Design, Richard D. Stokes Jr.

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

An ambitious and novel approach to engineering design and sustainability has been taken to explore the potential of drawing parallels between mechanical and biological systems for the possible development of sustainable engineering design metrics using a thermodynamic model. This approach looks to biology. Natural selection has given biological beings and processes high exergetic efficiencies, even while being only 30-40% energy efficient on the cell level. This energy inefficiency, resulting in a release of heat, can then be used to aid in driving other biochemical processes. The Gibbs free energy becomes more negative proportionally with an increase in temperature, resulting in …

The Revitalization Of Mak Yong In The Malay World, Pudentia Mpss Apr 2010

The Revitalization Of Mak Yong In The Malay World, Pudentia Mpss

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

Culture can only be revitalized when a cultural tradition is considered of significant importance by its owning community. How important it is for the identity of that community or in how far it symbolizes that community can only be established after in-depth study. It is crucial that revitalization activities involve the community. If not, efforts would be pointless. Mak Yong is one of the Malay performing art traditions that has been revitalized over the last five years. It is an art form that originates in southern Thailand and was brought to Bintan in the Riau Islands (Kepulauan Riau, Kepri) via …

The Myth About The Origin Of The Karo House, Juara R. Ginting Apr 2010

The Myth About The Origin Of The Karo House, Juara R. Ginting

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

The Karo people in North Sumatra (Indonesia) consider areas in the Karo regency and those in other regencies as part of Taneh Karo (the Karolands), despite the fact that these areas comprise different administrative territories. This paper focuses on how the idea of Taneh Karo is articulated in a special Karo myth. Scholarly research has discovered that the notion of Taneh Karo originated in pre-colonial times, but an analysis of a local myth which established the concept of Taneh Karo remains an interesting anthropological study. This study is significant as it endeavours to comprehend the traditional ways of life of …

The Effect Of Oral Performances In Audiences' Minds And Behaviour, Santosa Santosa Apr 2010

The Effect Of Oral Performances In Audiences' Minds And Behaviour, Santosa Santosa

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

As a means of communicating thoughts, gamelan performances affect the way audiences construct their worldview. More than that, listeners in villages believe that performances can affect people's behaviour. Performances may be deeply influential in the creation of fundamental social values such as in-group integrity, feelings of unity and peace in the community. All this demonstrates that in villages, arts are not autonomous entities; people value the arts as an integral domain with other social activities.

Mamanda Theatre, The Play Of Banjar Culture, Ninuk Kleden-Probonegoro Apr 2010

Mamanda Theatre, The Play Of Banjar Culture, Ninuk Kleden-Probonegoro

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

This article reveals the dialectic relationship between Teater Mamanda and the living conditions of Banjarese community. When we watch Mamanda, we watch the life and culture of the Banjarese. Without any knowledge of Banjarese society and culture we cannot possibly understand the content of a Mamanda performance as a miniature version of Banjarese society and culture. Three areas where Mamanda is performed have been studied using Paul Ricoeur's textual theory. There are two kinds of texts, the Mamanda performance (considered as text, that is, social events fixated in the form of a performance), and the narration of the performance itself …

Duality Of A Cage, Younseal Eum Apr 2010

Duality Of A Cage, Younseal Eum

Theses and Dissertations

My thesis is about the dualistic connotation of the cage. The original intention of a cage is to create a boundary to enclose a target. However, a cage has a positive intent for protection. With this idea, I created kinetic sculpture and installation pieces referencing cages. While I understand the negative association of cages, I made them seductive through the careful consideration of lightness, fragility, and sheen. I have been exploring forms and material qualities to express the contradictory connotation of cages. Most of my work is made of wire because I have a great interest in the delicate nature …

Mind, Body, And Handwoven Cloth, Andrea Donnelly Apr 2010

Mind, Body, And Handwoven Cloth, Andrea Donnelly

Theses and Dissertations

My work explores the nature of individual perception, and the side of our lives lived entirely within our minds. I do this through the lens of self-reflection, examining the images of my own mental life and translating them into delicately handwoven cloth. These images and their structures become sensory experiences of the intangible, and a meeting place for my internal life and that of my viewer. The cloth I weave is simultaneously familiar and strange. Through woven surface and imbedded imagery, I attempt to illuminate the deep emotions that necessarily isolate us from each other, and the shared experiences of …

Voice On The Skin, Sarah Turner Apr 2010

Voice On The Skin, Sarah Turner

Theses and Dissertations

“The body can write on the skin from the inside—the soul, the mind, and the passions rise to the surface in boils, blushes, and rashes, and the invisible inside speaks by writing from the other side of the page”. -James Elkins Skin not only covers but reveals what is behind it. I utilize its language as indicator of flaws and pathologies. I depict and manipulate this, not just as it already exists with the human body, but as projections of my psychological states onto inanimate objects. Proposing that sight is a kind of touch, we touch with our minds, through …
