Students' Perceptions Of Coercion In Research, Azure L. Midzinski May 2010

Students' Perceptions Of Coercion In Research, Azure L. Midzinski

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The purpose of this study was to examine how students perceive the most common methods of recruitment for research participation, and whether these recruitment strategies are perceived by the participants to be coercive. Ethical research guidelines prohibit the use of coercion in recruiting participants. Previous studies in this area have either focused on the perceptions of the researchers, or have approached the concept of coercion in a limited way. This study treated coercion as a multidimensional construct and examined student perceptions. Additionally, participant responses indicated which recruitment practices resulted in a decision to participate in the research. Findings indicate that …

The Career Intern Program: An Alternative High School In 1970'S Philadelphia, Brandon Rains

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

In 1971, Leon Sullivan, founder and chairman of the Board for the Opportunities Industrialization Centers of America, created the Career Intern Program. The purpose of the Program was to identify and help dropouts and potential dropouts from high school graduate and select and start a career. In order to accomplish these ambitious goals, Program leaders introduced a variety of educational innovations designed to help interns succeed where traditional educational methods had not. During the Career Intern Program's operational life, CIP leaders turned to the federal government for funding, and the National Institute of Education became CIP's primary funder from 1972 …

An Examination Of The Life And Work Of Gustav Hasford, Matthew Samuel Ross May 2010

An Examination Of The Life And Work Of Gustav Hasford, Matthew Samuel Ross

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

While Stanley Kubrick's film Full Metal Jacket has remained in the national consciousness twenty years after its release, the author of its source material, Gustav Hasford, has not. Few people know or remember that the Oscar-nominated film was not an original work but was adapted by Hasford, Kubrick, and Dispatches author Michael Herr from Hasford's 1979 novel The Short-Timers. Fewer people remember that following the well-reviewed The Short-Timers Hasford published a sequel, The Phantom Blooper, as well as one final novel A Gypsy Good Time, a frenetic parody of detective fiction. To say that Gustav Hasford is primarily remembered as …

Atomic Governance: Militarism, Secrecy, And Science In Post-War America, 1945-1958, Mary D. Wammack May 2010

Atomic Governance: Militarism, Secrecy, And Science In Post-War America, 1945-1958, Mary D. Wammack

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

This history of America's post-World War II atomic program examines the institutional impulses that drove its evolution from 1945 through the 1958 moratorium on atmospheric weapons testing. Based on archival research and methodologies borrowed from sociologists and legal theorists, it focuses on the motivations of and decisions made by military officers, program managers and affiliates in the private sector, their relationships, and the alliances they formed with congressmen. This analysis identifies a two-stage process of self-interested decision-making through which the armed forces, seeking to mitigate postwar loss of funding and influence, gained de facto control of the atomic program that …

The Rhetorical Significance Of Gojira, Shannon Victoria Stevens May 2010

The Rhetorical Significance Of Gojira, Shannon Victoria Stevens

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Gojira, commonly known as the "original" Godzilla movie, is a clear commentary on the horrors the Japanese people suffered during and after the dropping of nuclear bombs in their country at the end of World War II. The intent of this thesis is to demonstrate that Gojira is a rhetorical experience that permitted the Japanese to discuss the un-discussable--namely, the destruction of Japan caused by the awakening of the American "monster" of war and nuclear weapons. The thesis is argued in four chapters. Chapter one is the prospectus, chapter two provides historical context of the emergence of nuclear culture, …

Use(Ful In(Form)Ation, Dustin Lapray

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

I cleaned my room early in the spring of 2009, sorted laundry and cleaned off my oft-cluttered desk. In the process I found an old Mead Composition Notebook from a Film and Literature course I took at the College of Southern Idaho. Inside the back cover I discovered a page of useful information. The charts and measurements included: a multiplication table, 12 other tables intended to measure everything from paper, drugs, liquid and time, metric nomenclature and, finally, conversion tables from the metric system into American standard systems of measurement. I tore the back cover from the notebook and tacked …

"Sore Vexation," The Utah Saints And The Gentile War: The Development Of The Lds Church During The Civil War, Rebecca Ann Hawks May 2010

"Sore Vexation," The Utah Saints And The Gentile War: The Development Of The Lds Church During The Civil War, Rebecca Ann Hawks

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

The Mormons, who prefer to be called members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, tried to build a nation during the Civil War. In 1832, their prophet, Joseph Smith, prophesized that a war between the Northern and Southern states had been pre-ordained because of the Gentiles’ sins against the Saints. Mormons thought this war would be the beginning of the end times. They believed the Civil War would cause the ruin of all nations—except for the Mormon nation of Zion. Mormons held fast to the promise that God would protect their land. Early members tried to build …

Child Mothers In Children’S Literature: Victorian Gender Negotiations In Burnett’S Girlhood Fiction, Hailey Siobhan Grist May 2010

Child Mothers In Children’S Literature: Victorian Gender Negotiations In Burnett’S Girlhood Fiction, Hailey Siobhan Grist

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

Victorian girlhood literature frequently reflects and reinforces the dominant gender ideology of English culture by constructing female protagonists who are ultimately rewarded for conforming to the domestic ideal of the Victorian era. Through the medium of children’s literature, writers and publishers responded and contributed to the discourse on women’s roles in Victorian society, reacting to—and often against—the Women’s Rights Movement and the rise of The New Woman by targeting The New Girl. The object of my research is to examine (1) the ways in which Francis Hodgson Burnett’s A Little Princess and The Secret Garden, as well as The Girl’s …

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

I see the human experience as composed of both objectivity and subjectivity. Objectivity in that science has helped us better understand our physicality, such as defining biological processes within our body. Empirical knowledge has provided a level of truth in explaining a foundation for our existence.

Subjective experiences materialize as we engage within the environment. Walking in the park or purchasing food seem to be similar experiences for everyone in that we can envision the process of doing it; however, that process is an individual process composed of unique characteristics and perspectives. A subjective experience is as unique as one’s …

Historic Domes In The Middle East And Central Asia: A Study On Pointed Discontinuous Double-Shell Domes., Maryam Ashkan

Student Works (2010-2019)

This research presents a developed geometric approach for deriving the typologies and geometries of discontinuous double-shell domes, specially pointed types, in Islamic architecture. In addition, common morphological and typological characteristics of Eastern domes are put forward. Firstly, an outline of the origin and development of Eastern domes are addressed since the early through to the late Islamic periods. Common formal architectural language of Eastern domes are established by estimation of 53 samples of domes amongst eight countries; these are Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan and Turkey. In this regard, multifold approaches for analyzing those samples are organized into …

Comment On Degenova's "Management Of Quality": Flight Of The Unfixed, Stefano Harney May 2010

Comment On Degenova's "Management Of Quality": Flight Of The Unfixed, Stefano Harney

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Nick DeGenova’s study does more than expose the poverty of intersectionality—that sociological theory that posits the importance of considering race, class, and gender and sexuality together as they interact with each other as independent variables. It allows us to move from the most common and least correct criticism of intersectionality, that it is a theory that contains class within a functionalist sociological universe, to a much bolder contention. The contention is this: class contains. It is class that contains the surplus, the commons, of race, gender and sexuality. It is class that tames. This is because class is the category …

Philosophical Concerns: Implications For Art Therapy, Anzhela Akbarova May 2010

Philosophical Concerns: Implications For Art Therapy, Anzhela Akbarova

EVMS School of Health Professions Theses & Dissertations

Throughout centuries, philosophers have asked and attempted to answer questions that address human concerns: identity establishment, search for purpose in life, fear of nonexistence, spirituality, and relationships with other people in the world. Some psychologists and arts therapists have also acknowledged the existence of these concerns. This thesis is a comparative analysis of philosophical literature and concludes that art therapists should acknowledge human concerns in their theory and practice.
