Pretty Ballerina, Kerry Jones May 2010

Pretty Ballerina, Kerry Jones

Bryant Literary Review

It's just one of those things that sometimes happens to me: I'll find myself walking by a playground, or I'll be walking through the mall, and I'll see a little girl about eleven or so, and that's when my mind takes on a life of its own.

"Subject To Change" : The Composition Course Syllabus And Intersections Of Authority, Genre, And Community., Christopher Michael Alexander 1976- May 2010

"Subject To Change" : The Composition Course Syllabus And Intersections Of Authority, Genre, And Community., Christopher Michael Alexander 1976-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation is an investigation of composition's disciplinary conceptions of the course syllabus, from its often-relegated position as textual object to a more interactive and complex subject of our discipline. The course syllabus is an example of an occluded genre, operating behind the scenes while serving commitments and obligations of a dominant ideology. This position as an occluded genre offers opportunities for composition instructors to thoroughly examine what our syllabi are really doing. By further exploring how we think about course syllabi, we can contribute to the development of our own teaching, as well as the teaching styles and practices …

Why Jerusalem? Why Then?, Erin Larson May 2010

Why Jerusalem? Why Then?, Erin Larson

All Theses

One of the fascinating aspects of this research is how what individuals believe to be true leads to collective action as a society. Research for this paper will show the evolution of Christian theology from the early Christian rejection of the physical world to the medieval reliance on physical people, places and objects as a connection to heaven. This paper will also track the creation of penitential warfare as a way of entering heaven. This paper will prove that Jerusalem was important to medieval Europeans for three reasons: saving the city from the Muslims was an act of penance, the …

A Christmas Tree And Other Stories, Jillian Lang May 2010

A Christmas Tree And Other Stories, Jillian Lang

All Theses

The stories presented in this thesis are written mainly in the vein of literary minimalism and post-Modernism. The stories focus on a variety of themes, as related to human emotions and reactions. The thesis begins with A Christmas Tree, which focuses on the opinions and reactions of a mentally-handicapped man as he struggles with his desires to be an average, contributing member of society. The second story in the collection, The Little Red Schoolhouse, focuses on sexuality and how pride and dishonesty can ruin an otherwise successful relationship.A Learned Helplessness and Supper Club, stories three and four in the collection, …

What He Had Never Done Before And Other Plays, Alex Odom May 2010

What He Had Never Done Before And Other Plays, Alex Odom

Theses & Honors Papers

The purpose of this thesis is to conduct an exploration of masculinity through the creation of fictional voices and use of dramatic structures. The five pieces of dramatic writing which make up my thesis, four plays and one screenplay, collectively entitled "What He Had Never Done Before and Other Plays," have proven to be an examination of masculinity through personal relationships, primarily the roles of brothers and husbands. These relationships focus on the guilt associated with perceived masculine behavior, the often wrong decisions boys make to feel more like men, the often violent or dishonest behavior. The plays explore the …

The Correlation Between Academic Achievements, Self-Esteem And Motivation Of Female Seventh Grade Students: A Mixed Methods Approach, Karen Henman May 2010

The Correlation Between Academic Achievements, Self-Esteem And Motivation Of Female Seventh Grade Students: A Mixed Methods Approach, Karen Henman

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

During the early grades, female students generally display enthusiasm for learning science. As these same students go though school, however, their level of motivation changes. Once female students reach high school, many lack the confidence to take chemistry and physics. Then, in college they lack the background necessary to major in chemistry, physics, and engineering. This study used quantitative data to investigate the correlation between female students' motivation, self-esteem, and standards-based state science achievement tests combined with a qualitative survey of student’s perceptions of parents’ attitudes toward science. The Children’s Science Motivation Inventory (CAIMI) determined students’ levels of motivation toward …

Low Water: A Collection Of Short Fiction, Charles Conn May 2010

Low Water: A Collection Of Short Fiction, Charles Conn

Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

The craft of fiction evolves and progresses alongside other pursuits in the humanities. This thesis project represents a culmination of study in the process of creating fiction from standard practices which are fundamental to creating fiction that “works” to innovations in the field and how they have shaped the craft through its history. The creative thesis project is an attempt to apply some of these fundamental and experimental concepts to my own creative work and thereby develop a collection of short fiction representative of my abilities as a writer and my training as a writing student. A brief look into …

Maelstrom, Gertrude L. Teijink May 2010

Maelstrom, Gertrude L. Teijink

School of Art, Art History, and Design: Theses and Student Creative Work

My work is a confrontation with the conflict between our everyday activities, and the fleetingness of our existence. We are dragged through time and through space, but ultimately we are unavoidably lost in a swirl of oblivion. Given this dissonance, I question the meaning of our everyday activities. Can we find satisfaction with what we do? And why are we compelled to do it? The case I try to make for the meaning of life’s repetitive or renewal actions is made largely in reference to myself, which gives my work an undeniable autobiographical component.

For my thesis work, I photograph …

Review Of Aguecheek’S Beef, Belch’S Hiccup, And Other Gastronomic Interjections: Literature, Culture, And Food Among The Early Moderns By Robert Appelbaum, Elizabeth Spiller May 2010

Review Of Aguecheek’S Beef, Belch’S Hiccup, And Other Gastronomic Interjections: Literature, Culture, And Food Among The Early Moderns By Robert Appelbaum, Elizabeth Spiller

Department of English: Faculty Publications

Histories of food have traditionally emerged out of the fields of structural anthropology, ethnology, and historical sociology. More recent scholarship has emphasized the idea of foodways, those networks by which foods are produced, prepared, and consumed within different food communities. Rather than seeing rituals of culture in food, such scholarship has instead sought to understand food in terms of a circulation of physical resources and values that involves questions of economics, ecology, biology, and ethnobotany. The first approach has tended, broadly speaking, to produce scholarship that is concerned with the ritual, symbolic, and social qualities to our acts of sustenance. …
