‘The Metal Face Of The Age’: Hesiod, Virgil, And The Iron Age On Cold Mountain, Emily A. Mcdermott
‘The Metal Face Of The Age’: Hesiod, Virgil, And The Iron Age On Cold Mountain, Emily A. Mcdermott
Classics & Religious Studies Faculty Publication Series
A prominent theme in Charles Frazier’s Cold Mountain is that redemption from the brutality of war may be achieved by retreat from the “metal face” of the contemporary age and return to a healing agricultural work ethic. In this context, the author makes recurrent reference to the classical topic of the “Golden Age,” a lost paradise on earth. He introduces this topic first as it appeared in Hesiod’s Works and Days, expressive of a profoundly pessimistic view that human history has been one long deterioration. As his protagonist’s physical and psychic homeward journey nears completion, though, he invokes the more …

A Not-Too-Distant Mirror: The Talcott Commission (1840-43) And The Meaning Of The Border, Andrew C. Holman
A Not-Too-Distant Mirror: The Talcott Commission (1840-43) And The Meaning Of The Border, Andrew C. Holman
Bridgewater Review
“Who we are” has always been defined in part by “who we’re not,” and who we’re not is often symbolized by our borders. America’s edges, its international borders, have become a critical focus of identity politics and border security - keeping out Mexican migrants, Canadian drug smugglers and other fiends - grist for the Sunday morning news show mills. However, today’s Fortress America is hardly new; students who examine America’s mid-nineteenth-century rush to solidify its national borders would find that their ancestors made a similar equation. The ways they defined their borders reflected the ways they defined themselves. In 1840 …

The Anti-Colonial Revolutionary In Contemporary Bollywood Cinema, Vidhu Aggarwal
Faculty Publications
In her article "The Anti-Colonial Revolutionary in Contemporary Bollywood Cinema" Vidhu Aggarwal discusses several contemporary films including Rakesh Omprakash Mehra's Rang de Basanti with focus on the figure of the revolutionary hero. The Bollywood film is a cultural form that combines several aesthetic styles, from within India and from the outside. With its formal heterogeneity and as a product of one of India's largest cities, Mumbai Bollywood has had an ongoing fascination with "arrival," that is, with India's status as a contemporary nation-state. While some Bollywood films seem to celebrate fantasy scenarios of India's arrival on the global scene, at …

Toward An Epistemology Of Mysticism: Knowing God As Mystery, Theresa W. Tobin
Toward An Epistemology Of Mysticism: Knowing God As Mystery, Theresa W. Tobin
Philosophy Faculty Research and Publications
While some philosophers suggest that mystical experience may provide evidence for belief in God, skeptics doubt that there is adequate warrant for even accepting the claim of a mystical experience as evidence for anything, except perhaps for some kind of mental instability. Drawing from the work of Gabriel Marcel, I argue that the pervasive philosophical skepticism about the evidential status of mystical experiences is misguided because it rests on too narrow a view about ways of knowing and about what can count as evidence for belief in the divine. I illustrate the advantages of Marcel's approach by applying it to …
A Systemic Functional Multimodal Analysis Of Business Brochures., Fauziah Taib
A Systemic Functional Multimodal Analysis Of Business Brochures., Fauziah Taib
Student Works (2010-2019)
The study is a multimodal analysis of Malaysian business-to-business brochures (b2b) that advertise training programmes for human resource development in local and multinational companies. The multimodal analysis is within the framework of systemic functional theory as the theory has resources to analyse verbal as well as visual elements in texts. The aims of the study are to identify the verbal and visual components that make up the genre, ascertain how the functions of the business brochures are realized in the components and establish how these various semiotic components cohere such that the brochures are seen as a unified whole. The …

Entri Agama Berlabel "Ar" Dalam Kamus Dewan : Satu Analisis Semantik., Wan Mohd Saophy Amizul Wan Mansor
Student Works (2010-2019)
Kamus Dewan (KD4) is the latest issue of Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka Malay monolingual dictionary. Beside the native Malay words, the dictionary also records a great number of entries of loan words from foreign languages such as Arabic, which is labeled 'Ar'. The loan words normally do not deviate from the narrowing, extension or variation in its actual meaning. As such, the study done is more focused on the aspects of accuracy of the Malay meaning than its original meaning in Arabic with al-Mu‘jam al-Wasit as a key reference in comparing and checking of its original meaning in Arabic besides …
