This article attempts to sift through the writings of Fethullah Gülen) a Turkish intellectual) in order to make explicit his blueprint for world peace. Gülen argues that today)s world has succumbed to materialism and hedonism. The antidote consists in the development of one)s interior or spiritual life) adorning oneself with such virtues as humility) love) and self-sacrifice. He also calls for an education that involves the whole person: body) mind) and spirit. Acceptance of others and dialogue between East and West) Muslims and Christians is essential if there is to be peace on earth.

This paper examines from a culturalist viewpoint Istanbul's contribution to the diversification of cultures and ethnic identities of the Republic of Turkey. The city's wealth lies in its reservoir of cultures, multiplicity of civilizations, languages and religions which are lively, highly operational and versatile. Istanbul, the city of cultures, has been traditionally recognized with its embodiment of continuous amalgamation and ethnic toleration. At Ortaköy and Boyaciköy, an Armenian Catholic church, a Gregorian church, two Greek churches, two synagogues and two mosques stand side by side, in close proximity to each other. The oft-heard phrase "Support the Troops" now signifies the desire both to send more soldiers to war and to bring home those already in combat. This "nation of immigrants" has spawned a new generation of "minute-men" to defend national borders while mainstream discourse touts the benefits of "diversity." Even in the postcolonial era, West African history remains plagued by Eurocentric myths and media-driven stereotypes. Though specialists have been struggling with this problem for decades, a rift remains between the elite world of academia and the African history being taught in American schools. Jonathan Ree describes an ideal nation where each national subject can proclaim, "the nation is mine" (1998, p. 89). Ngũgũ wa Thiong'o's Wizard of the Crow, depicts a state where the state and its ruler are co-extensive, the subjects exiles. In this paper, I argue that as an external exile, Ngũgũ has become a global citizen. That global citizenship still exhibits a rooted cosmopolitanism. Ngũgũ reclaims his nation vicariously through empowered women who resist the corruption of the nation by the excesses of patriarchal power and global capital. Ethnographic performance draws upon fieldwork in a particular social/cultural "lived domain" (Madison, 2005, p. 5) as the text (aural, visual, gestural) for the performance (or representation) of other identities. Through ethnography, we are required to enter into a "deep and abiding dialogue with the Other" (Madison, 2005, p.B). Ethnographic performance is particularly focused on giving representation to individuals and groups whose voices and stories often go unheard.

This paper explores the construction of knowledge in Kenya in the context and aftermath of colonialism and underdevelopment. Those communities that were politically and economically marginalized in Coast Province over the past century were also displaced in terms of academic opportunities, resulting in fewer social science scholars from Mijikenda and other non-Swahili communities in both Kenyan and diaspora universities. Underdevelopment studies in Africa and Kenya are briefly reviewed, and the colonial history of asymmetric social relations at coastal Kenya is traced. Finally, key debates over identity and history are examined within this context and shown to be exacerbated by diasporic …

Gene expression microarray datasets often consist of a limited number of samples relative to a large number of expression measurements, usually on the order of thousands of genes. These characteristics pose a challenge to any classification model as they might negatively impact its prediction accuracy. Therefore, dimensionality reduction is a core process prior to any classification task.

This dissertation introduces the iterative feature perturbation method (IFP), an embedded gene selector that iteratively discards non-relevant features. IFP considers relevant features as those which after perturbation with noise cause a change in the predictive accuracy of the classification model. Non-relevant features do …

The efficiency to improve the water quality of industrial and municipal wastewater in a constructed wetland/filter basin treatment system was investigated. The wetland system was constructed in a closed phosphate mine used for clay settling and sand tailings in Polk County, Florida. During 18-months of monitoring the chemical/microbiological composition of treated wetland water remained relatively constant, despite significant seasonal variations in temperature, rainfall and humidity. The following changes in water quality between input and output were observed: substantial decrease of water temperature (up to 10°C), reduction of As, SO₄, F, Cl, NO₃, NO₂, Br, …

These works explore the contradictions in the American character, highlighting the many ironies and hypocrisies inherent within them. I hope to encourage the viewer to reassess his or her own perspectives by confronting them with bold imagery that questions the relative civic and cultural values of American society. The mediums of printmaking and video are utilized for their fundamental accessibility to the audience, and for their unique compatibility with the democratic ideal.
