This paper looks at how the net neutrality debate relates to the music recording industry and considers how new media audiences consume music as social experience and with generative impulse. As the Internet appears to force the music recording industry to re-evaluate its function and change its approach to distributing music and making money, music artistes seem to no longer need to rely on ‘record deals’ to launch or build a music career; and music audiences no longer have to rely on Top-40 radio to be told what is popular listening. Microbes are prevalent in geologic settings and a growing body of research suggests the roles they play in geologic processes may be more important than previously thought, and therefore underestimated. This dissertation addresses the influence of microbes on the dissolution of limestone in karst settings by analyzing the stable carbon isotopes and geochemistry of air and waters from three unique cave and karst settings: West-Central Florida, the Everglades (southern Florida) and The Bahamas. In Florida, these parameters as well as air/water temperature, rainfall, and water-level fluctuations were monitored for 22 and 10 months. In the Bahamas, geochemical data were collected …

Migrant and seasonal farmworkers play a critical role in the U.S. economy, producing food for the American public, while their suffering is often rendered invisible by their existence on the margins of society. The low wages associated with farm labor combined with the largely undocumented status of this population severely limits access to food, housing, and health care, resulting in poor health outcomes. Through the use of a critical anthropological approach, this research examines the social, cultural, political, and economic context of obesity among Latino migrant and seasonal farmworkers in Central Florida. The purpose of this thesis is to determine the factors that contributed to the decline of Florida apple snail (Pomacea paludosa) populations in the A.R.M. Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge with the goal of devising management recommendations to the Refuge regarding population management strategies. The factors examined that could have potentially contributed to population decline include the use of copper-based herbicides, insecticide application, the occurrence of drought, the use of other herbicides, the occurrence of fire, and non-avian predation. Annual Narrative documents produced by Refuge managers and staff members, dated from 1951 to 2007, were used to collect historical data for …

Salvation-themed art environments are a roadside rarity, built out of a strong visionary dedication to God, but the sites are disappearing simply because the work is misunderstood. The historiography on the subject is sparse, trending more toward coffee table books with big glossy pictures than real scholarly endeavors, but the consensus among all has been clear. The sites are a valuable part of the recent American cultural landscape, crossing several scholarly fields - art, architecture, and history - and uniting them into a cohesive preservation movement. Reliable Words; Third Person Pronouns In Indonesian News Reports, Dwi Noverini Djenar

This article examines uses of Indonesian third person singular pronouns ia and dia in news reports. It takes as its departure point the general account of the pronouns which specifies that ia can occur only in subject position, while dia can occur in subject or object position. The article shows that, although both pronouns can occur in subject position, they differ distributionally and functionally. Ia occurs almost three times as frequently as dia and predominates in subject position, while dia occurs mostly in non-subject position. Gender And The Indonesian Pronouns, Hein Steinhauer

The absence of a gender opposition in the Indonesian pronominal system requires special strategies in the translation from languages which do have such an opposition illustrated in the first part opf this article. In the second part the lexical and morphological means are discussed with which Indonesian expresses gender, culminating in a description of the use of perempuan and wanita, pria and laki-laki.

This paper1 deals with the phonology and the lexicology of the Indonesian Bajo language and more specifically with the dialect or variant that can be heard all around the Flores Sea in Kangean, South-East Sulawesi, Sumbawa, and Flores. The phonological survey focuses on vowel lengthening, gemination, pre-nasalized phonemes, and sandhi. The second part of this paper proposes an insight into Bajo lexicology, restricted to nominal and verbal derivation.

This paper looks at the nature of data for lexicography and in particular on the central role that electronic corpora can play in providing it. Data has traditionally come from existing dictionaries, citations, and from the lexicographer's own knowledge of words, through introspection. Each of these is examined and evaluated. Then the electronic corpus is considered. Different kinds of corpora are described and key design criteria are explained, in particular the size of corpus needed for lexicography as well as the issue of representativeness and sampling. Aspect And Modality In Indonesian; The Case Of "Sudah", "Telah", "Pernah", And "Sempat", Philippe Grangé

In this paper, I describe four Indonesian aspect markers, sudah, telah, pernah, and sempat, showing that the main opposition between them relies not only on their aspectual meanings, but also on the various modalities they express. The opposition between the very frequent markers sudah and telah is analysed in detail. The syntactic and semantic survey shows that these two markers are not synonyms in most contexts.

Different form many other name-giving possibilities in the world, in Indonesia parents are free to give their children any name they like. These names, many of which are auspicious in view of the child's future, are often constructed by means of productive morphological procedures. Seven suffixes are followed through history and culture and their possibilities in making new names are explored. As we all know, the Old Javanese Mah bh rata was not created from scratch by a Javanese author but was translated (in some sense) from the Sanskrit. The story of Hi imb reveals an interesting difference between the Old Javanese version and the Sanskrit version of the text. In the latter2 Hi imb appeals to Kunt , Bh ma's mother, after Bh ma keeps rejecting her.
