History

Although the Gunpowder Plot of 1605 failed at the level of conventional political action, it had a profound impact on Anglo-American political culture. The Plot added the face of Guy Fawkes to our political iconography, and Introduced the word 'guy' into the English language. This paper argues that the face of Fawkes and the word 'guy' have become what poststructuralists call 'free floating signifiers.' Liberated from all permanent meaning, this image and this word have become potent instruments for the promotion of postmodern anarchism. This thesis examines the academic performance of inner-city elementary school children with the purpose of proving or disproving that exposure to instrumental instruction in addition to general music class enhances learning in the core areas of study, thus improving test scores and overall academic performance. The data collected and the results that come from this experiment are intended to represent only a small neighborhood in a fairly large city.

Liberal Theology In The Weimar Era: Schleiermacher And The Question Of Religious Subjectivity In The Methodenstreit Between Georg Wobbermin And Karl Barth, Brent Hege

Philosophy, Religion, and Classics

Recent historical studies of liberal theology in the Weimar era have called into question the popular thesis of liberal theology's sudden demise and disappearance coincident with the First World War and the publication of Karl Barth's Römerbrief. Historians of this period of theology are rediscovering a vibrant liberal theology active well into the 1920s and even into the 1930s. One of these liberal theologians, Georg Wobbermin, was particularly active in this period, and his work serves as an example of a constructive liberal theology pursued in the midst of dialectical theology's rise to prominence on the German-speaking theological scene. Communicating With Accelerated Observers In Minkowski Spacetime, Francisco Flores

Philosophy

Our goal here is to determine the spatial and temporal constraints on communication between two observers at least one of which moves with constant proper acceleration in two-dimensional Minkowski spacetime. We take as a simplified model of communication one observer bouncing a light signal off another observer. Our derivations use only elementary mathematics and spacetime diagrams, and hence are accessible to students taking their first course in special relativity. Furthermore, the qualitative features of our results can be easily explained to non-physics students in courses that discuss special relativity at a ‘conceptual’ level.

Child Production Of Quechua Evidential Morphemes In Conversations And Story Retellings, Ellen Courtney

Languages such as Turkish, Korean, and Japanese exhibit evidential morphemes encoding information source as direct or indirect evidence. Investigations of child acquisition of evidential systems (notably, Aksu-Koc, 1988; Choi, 1995; Matsui, Yamamoto & McCagg, 2006) reveal that development of evidential meaning is a protracted process, relying on children’s incremental understanding of mental states. This study examines child production of five Quechua suffixes, including three evidential enclitics (direct evidence, hearsay, report), and two verb inflections that differentiate perceived and unperceived events in past time. For this purpose, the research team recorded 15 conversations between mothers and their children, aged 2;3-8;0, as …

Since 2003, when Clémence Boulouque's memoir, Mort d'un silence, was published, its author has written in a variety of genres, including novels, articles, and film scripts. Mort d'un silence, her first autobiographical work, interests the reader for several reasons: it revisits Judge Gilles Boulouque's suicide in December 1990 and the consequences of this act for his family, especially his thirteen-year-old daughter, Clémence; it recalls the political climate in France during the late 1980s, when Gilles Boulouque had already begun to fight terrorism; and it illustrates the tension between disclosure and concealment as its twenty-six-year-old narrator describes her passage from childhood …

'In the Weave: Bhutanese Textiles and National Identity' logo and informational wall panels designed for the exhibit at the Stanlee and Gerald Rubin Center for the Visual Arts. The photography used in these panels was taken by 2008 Guggenheim Fellow and New Mexico State University Professor David Taylor. I isolated and monotoned all the hand-painted Buddhist symbols used in the panels from a single shot of Taylor's taken of a Bhutanese temple wall.

Designed and installed the exhibit 'Building a Bosque: 10 Years of Habitat Restoration at Rio Bosque Wetlands Park' at UTEP’s Centennial Museum. This exhibit celebrated a 10-year collaboration between the University's Center for Environmental Resource Management and other local entities in caring for the Wetlands and helping restore it to the plant and wildlife habitat it once was prior to the channelization of the Rio Grande in the mid-1930s.
