I designed the exhibit 'To the Ends of the Earth: UTEP at the Poles' at UTEP’s Centennial Museum. This exhibit displayed the photography and research findings of the IPY-ROAM (International Polar Year–Research and Educational Opportunities in Antarctica for Minorities) program hosted by the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP), especially as they pertain to global warming. At The Crossroads Of Hualapai History, Memory, And American Colonization: Contesting Space And Place, Jeffrey Shepherd

Selected Works Temporary Series

This essay argues that the colonization of the Americas involved not only physical and economic dimensions, but also spatial and historical components. As the Hualapai in Arizona contested colonization, they presented myriad forms of their own history in an effort to remain tied to traditional landscapes. However, as they articulated these histories, they implicitly accepted a metanarrative of their own past that reflected the modernist tropes of nationalism and cultural essentialism. Although they successfully held onto their reservation they simultaneously created an ambiguous legacy rooted in self-determination and contradictory strands of historical memory. The Commission on Spirit-Empowered Living in the 21st Century was an initiative of the Oral Roberts University Board of Trustees. The University Board Chair appointed a small number of trustees for the commission to develop the parameters of the plan and work with University administration on future implications. The Board initiated this conversation to ascertain the macro-environment in which ORU presently exists. It also utilized this process to inform the University’s future environment in which the ‘whole person’ educational process will be experienced.

This thesis examines the revision of eighteenth century gothic fiction by Dean Koontz's twentieth century horror novel, Intensity. In particular, the novel invites Aristotelian rhetorical analysis through the competing appeals staged by its antagonist, Vess, and its protagonist, Chyna.

Eugenic discourse is apparent in the work of many writers in the early 20th century, but is especially explicit in D.H. Lawrence's novel, Lady Chatterley's Lover, as well as his private letters. A close reading of these works illustrates Lawrence's attempts to grapple with his advocacy of eugenic.

The French nineteenth century artists Henry Toulouse-Lautrec (1864-1901) is known for his distinctive style and bold character portraits of the theatrical scene of the gaslight era in Paris. The paper examines some of the formative influences of eighteenth century Japanese art on the development of visual characters, with specific focus on a lithograph entitled Divan Japonais. Alluding to the refined representation of Japanese courtesans, subtle nuanced reminiscences to an ideal of elegance create an allusion to highly respected courtesans in the Japanese ‘Green Houses’ of the Asian Yoshiwara the famous “Good Luck Meadow” in Edo, present day Tokyo. The Confucian tradition embodies one of the most enduring and influential moral traditions in world history. Yet for Western readers Confucius remains little known, and perhaps even less approachable than the major thinkers of the Western philosophical tradition. While it is difficult to overstate his influence, Confucius himself left little if any written account of his moral outlook. What we know of the man and the origins of the Confucian tradition come from brief accounts of his life and teachings compiled primarily in the present text, the Analects. The purpose of this module is to compare the visual expressions representing the lives of two significant religious figures – the Buddha and Jesus Christ – whose lives were imaged figuratively for both meditation and didactic uses. In both cases imagery progressed from the aniconic stage to the figurative employing important events from the life of the individual. By defining "literati" and discussing the relationship between the literati, their apparatus, and their oeuvre, we are examining, in fact, Chinese thought. In Chinese worldview the sacred and secular are not sharply separated, as in the West. The Chinese primary religions are Daoism and Confucianism. Daoism is concerned with the individual’s relationship with Nature. And Confucianism explains man’s bearing on society and hence on the universe. For, it is the action of man, which maintains the harmony in the world.

Medievalism And Exoticism In The Music Of Dead Can Dance, Kirsten Yri

In 1991, the alternative rock band Dead Can Dance released an album that caught the attention of music reviewers by constructing an aural allegiance to the Middle Ages. Suitably called A Passage in Time, the album was described as imitating medieval chant, troubadour music, Latin hymns and courtly songs and included Dead Can Dance’s hybrid medieval songs as well as performances of actual medieval repertoire. In modeling their songs and sounds after historical recordings of medieval music, Dead Can Dance also adopted some of the ideological parameters of these performances and historical reconstructions. On March 30, 2008 over 300 students, residents and fellows met with nearly 150 Congressional House and Senate offices to discuss important issues in healthcare, including improving medical student loan deferment, impending Medicare physician payment cuts, and reform for expanding health insurance coverage. This piece provides a brief on those topics and their current standing Congress, and reviews one student’s experience of the annual AMA Lobby Day.

This brief review article examines some of the beliefs and practices of amateur wrestlers at various levels of competition. Physicians should be aware of the rapid weight loss and weight cycling associated with the sport. These issues may become of increasing concern to pediatricians in the New York Metropolitan area, as programs such as Beat the Streets (http://www.beat-the-streets.org/index.html) increase the popularity of amateur wrestling in the region. Familiarity with the weight management practices of the sport will enable physicians to educate and monitor their patients who participate in wrestling.
