The Promethean, Volume 16, Revelation, 2008, English Department, Concordia University-Portland

The Promethean

On each side of the river stood the tree of life, bearing twelve crops of fruit, yielding its fruit every month. And the leaves of the tree are for the healing of nations.
--Revelation 22:2

Minor things can become moments of great revelation when encountered for the first time.
--Margot Fonteyn

This year, The Promethean staff wanted a bold theme to complement last year's theme of Genesis. After much consideration, we felt Revelation would bring in a variety of submissions exploring the nature of endings and epiphanies. To our delight, this proved true, and we could not be more pleased …

A Reconsideration Of The Sunni-Shi'a Divide In Early Islam, Michael Bufano May 2008

A Reconsideration Of The Sunni-Shi'a Divide In Early Islam, Michael Bufano

All Theses

The purpose of this thesis is to explain how and why many modern Twelver Shi'a, Sunni, and Western scholars have structured political and religious conflict during the formative era of Islam (610-945 C.E.) around a partisan Sunni-Shi'a divide that did not truly exist, at least as we know it today, until the sixteenth century. By analyzing the socio-political and economic developments from the time of the Prophet Muhammad (570-632) to the Abbasid Revolution (750), I intend to show that there was no clear line that divided Sunni and Shi'a Muslims during the formative era of Islam, and that the concepts …

Introduction: The Practice And Prospects Of Grandparenting In The Pacific, Dorothy Ayers Counts

Pacific Studies

The contributors to this special issue represent the orientations and approaches of several social science disciplines and are variously involved in interdisci plina1y endeavors. However, anthropology is the primary discipline and ethno graphy a shared methodology. It is a main task of any ethnography to make the exotic familiar and to treat the familiar as though it were exotic. The papers in this special issue achieve this for grandparenthood in the Pacific. The familiar concept of grandparenthood is shown to have multiple meanings in close examinations of how the status is achieved, for example, what it means for a person's …

Medination: Pop Culture And The Classroom, Justin Lesniewski May 2008

Medination: Pop Culture And The Classroom, Justin Lesniewski

All Theses

This manuscript examines theoretical and practical concerns regarding the use of pop culture items in educational environments. By utilizing an ideological social constructionist perspective, such items can be seen as reified objects of thought and power. This discussion considers the reification process, our growing control over it in an increasingly techno-literate society, a specific example of the process, and how this process and our control over it can be incorporated into the classroom. The intent is to provide both a theoretical foundation and practical suggestions.

Beyond The Shade Of The Oak Tree: The Recent Growth Of Johannine Studies, Paul N. Anderson May 2008

Beyond The Shade Of The Oak Tree: The Recent Growth Of Johannine Studies, Paul N. Anderson

Faculty Publications - George Fox School of Theology

The recent growth within Johannine studies has developed as a result of several factors. First, the discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls led to an appreciation of the Jewishness of John’s origin. Second, new approaches to John’s composition have emerged, followed by a larger set of inquiries as to the Johannine tradition’s relation to parallel traditions. This has been accompanied by a fourth interest: the history of the Johannine situation. Fifth, new literary studies have posed new horizons for interpretation, and sixth, theories continue to abound on the identity of the Beloved Disciple. A seventh development involves new ways of …

Charlotte Perkins Gilman And Educational Philosophy: Social Progress And Contemporary Efficacy, Teresa Lynn Wise

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

As one of the prominent and influential philosophers of her time, Charlotte Perkins Gilman was well known for her 1898 study, Women and Economics: A Study of the Economic Relation between Men and Women as a Factor in Social Evolution. This study demonstrated the negative perceptions maintained toward women from within an androcentric culture. Gilman's treatise developed into a life long argument for the equal treatment and considered value of one-half of the human population: women. It is through the educational facet of her social philosophy illustrated in the novel, Her land, that Gilman demonstrates a culture composed of caring …

The Mauritian Election Of 2005: An Unprecedented Increase Of Women In Parliament, Mi Yung Yoon, Sheila Bunwaree May 2008

The Mauritian Election Of 2005: An Unprecedented Increase Of Women In Parliament, Mi Yung Yoon, Sheila Bunwaree

Journal of International Women's Studies

Before the 2005 election, women’s legislative representation in Mauritius had always been one of the lowest in the African continent, and the lowest in the Southern African Development Community (SADC). Although the number of women in the Mauritian legislature has fluctuated over time, the latest election on July 3, 2005 brought an unprecedented increase in the number of women from 4 (5.7 per cent) to 12 (17.1 per cent) in its 70-member legislature. Before this increase, the number of female members of parliament (MPs) had never exceeded six. If so, what contributed to such a sharp increase? This study addresses …

Emergence Of Women From ‘Private’ To ‘Public’: A Narrative Of Power Politics From Mizoram, Anup Shekhar Chakraborty May 2008

Emergence Of Women From ‘Private’ To ‘Public’: A Narrative Of Power Politics From Mizoram, Anup Shekhar Chakraborty

Journal of International Women's Studies

Understanding the complex state-building process in Mizoram requires the systematic mapping of the discourses and narratives of ‘inclusion’ and ‘exclusion’ at all levels which is thoroughly dictated by those in power. The region’s ‘Histories’ of statecraft and policies displays a distinct narrative than that of mainland India. The ‘Northeast’ in general and Mizoram in particular, provides a unique experience in understanding the trends in everyday politics as ‘a living space’ in contemporary India. Mizoram, as a category in contemporary Indian politics reminds one of ‘the protracted insurgency led by the legendary Laldenga and the Mizo National Front’. The region remains …

Creating Alternative And Demedicalized Spaces: Testimonial Narrative On Disability, Culture, And Racialization, Parin Dossa May 2008

Creating Alternative And Demedicalized Spaces: Testimonial Narrative On Disability, Culture, And Racialization, Parin Dossa

Journal of International Women's Studies

The literature on disability, gender and “race” has benefited from the political economy perspective. With its emphasis on unmasking the workings of power, this perspective has brought into relief the systemic, institutionalized and spatial oppression of disabled persons, compounded in the case of gender and “race.” This narrative of deconstruction, however, remains incomplete in the absence of voice and subjectivity of persons with disabilities. Using narrative moments, recounted by an immigrant woman with two “disabled” children, this paper makes a case for an integrated framework for a study of racialized persons with disabilities. Here, the margins2 are not out there …

In Two Different Worlds: How Malawian Girls Experience Schooling, Margaret Asalele Mbilizi May 2008

In Two Different Worlds: How Malawian Girls Experience Schooling, Margaret Asalele Mbilizi

Journal of International Women's Studies

This paper reports on a qualitative case study of how Malawian girls experience schooling in single-sex versus coeducational institutions. It is a qualitative narrative depicting the socializing and learning processes which affect girls’ potential to succeed in mathematics and science subjects and careers. Further I use critical reflection to describe my own experiences as a student, teacher, and researcher at one of the single-sex boarding schools.

The results confirm other research findings that single-sex school environments are effective in building high expectations and aspirations for higher education among girls. In single-sex schools, girls held higher educational expectations and occupational aspirations …

A Call To Political And Social Activism: The Jeremiadic Discourse Of Maria Miller Stewart, 1831-1833, Willie J. Harrell Jr. May 2008

A Call To Political And Social Activism: The Jeremiadic Discourse Of Maria Miller Stewart, 1831-1833, Willie J. Harrell Jr.

Journal of International Women's Studies

This essay identifies the rhetorical strategies of Maria Miller Stewart’s Boston anti-slavery discourse as jeremiads that connected her religious, moral, political and social lamentations of the American democratic system and called her audiences to aid in the desensitizing of slavery and America prejudice. When she attempted to establish a common ground, the aim of Stewart’s jeremiads was to make her audiences conscious of the numerous social and political grievances within the African-American community. Stewart’s jeremiadic discourse called for the deterioration of American racism and sexism and provided an agency that constituted a form of resistance.

La Mujer Guerrillera En Recuerdo Y Texto: Nicaragua Y El Salvador, Berta Avila May 2008

La Mujer Guerrillera En Recuerdo Y Texto: Nicaragua Y El Salvador, Berta Avila

Pitzer Senior Theses

Opening The Aperture: Examining Images Of War In The Press, Jeffrey Albanese May 2008

Opening The Aperture: Examining Images Of War In The Press, Jeffrey Albanese

Senior Honors Projects

A number of policymakers have attributed America’s defeat in Vietnam, the first “television war,” to a collapse of public support caused by nightly news coverage of combat with associated iconic photographs and moving images. The assumptions underlying this opinion are that photographs and video footage of war have an inherent pacifistic bias, that the emotional impact of visual images can override reason, and that powerful images can drive or overturn foreign policy. This has led subsequent administrations to increase their control over the media’s coverage of war. During the Vietnam War, the press was relatively uncensored. As a response to …

Healthy Habits: An Exploration Of Family Eating Choices And Practices, Stephanie Bramley

Senior Honors Projects

Before declaring myself a Human Development and Family Studies major at the end of my sophomore year, I searched for universities based upon my interest in nutrition. Since high school, I have become more health conscious and with my recent studies in human development and families, I became interested in family food choices and behaviors. Obesity is a rising epidemic in the United States and many habits, healthy or unhealthy, start with the family during childhood. I began working with Professors McCurdy and Gorman in the fall of 2007 on their Food Behavior Study, interviewing mothers with young children at …

A Defense Of The 63rd New York State Volunteer Regiment Of The Irish Brigade, Patricia Vaticano May 2008

A Defense Of The 63rd New York State Volunteer Regiment Of The Irish Brigade, Patricia Vaticano

Master's Theses

During the American Civil War, New York State’s irrepressible Irish Brigade was alternately composed of a number of infantry regiments hailing both from within New York City and from within and without the state, not all of them Irish, or even predominantly so. The Brigade’s core structure, however, remained constant throughout the war years and consisted of three all-Irish volunteer regiments with names corresponding to fighting units made famous in the annuals of Ireland’s history: the 69th, the 88th, and the 63rd. The 69th, or Fighting 69th, having won praise and homage for its actions at First Bull Run, was …
