Aids Art: Activism On Canvas, Lucy Sumners
Aids Art: Activism On Canvas, Lucy Sumners
Senior Honors Projects
Protest art is all around us. Whether we realize it or not, we are influenced by the political, social, or cultural messages that are within the artworks. I have always been interested in the effects of disease on a population and disease has had an effect on artists and the artworks that they produce throughout the ages. Today, AIDS has affected almost every single person on this planet and is a topic that enters political debates, affects the social constructs of society and carries many negative cultural connotations. AIDS first stormed through the United States in the early 1980s affecting …
Gender Minority Elder Care, Yisrael Malotte-Berger
Gender Minority Elder Care, Yisrael Malotte-Berger
Senior Honors Projects
The challenges facing older adults are great, including the challenges involved in finding quality healthcare and, potentially, assisted living or nursing residences. The challenges for older transsexual, transgender, and intersex (TGI) adults are compounded due to lack of sensitivity and confidentiality with regard to TGI patients or residents that is prevalent amongst especially lower level healthcare professionals. Part of the project was to develop an evaluation tool for changes in attitude and practical knowledge, to be administered as pre- and post-tests at employee trainings at elder care facilities. It was the goal of this project to evaluate the training programme …
Hip Hop Is Dead: The Rhetoric Of Hip Hop, Kalyana Champlain
Hip Hop Is Dead: The Rhetoric Of Hip Hop, Kalyana Champlain
Senior Honors Projects
There is no doubt that Hip Hop has become a most influential international force. This animal has had many faces: two of these faces have been as a political tool as displayed by Public Enemy, and as a therapeutic release-- as I discovered while in AmeriCorps interning at AS220 for a program called Hip Hop 220, in which we took underprivileged youth and helped them to channel their energy through this art form. However, there is a dark side to this culture that includes extreme misogyny, self- sabotage, hatred, and an unhealthy obsession with status. As I reflected on these …

Joan Kofodimos, author of, Balancing Act: How Managers Can Integrate Successful Careers and Fulfilling Personal Lives (1993), defines work-family integration as, “Having a satisfying, healthy, and productive life that includes work, play, and love; that integrates a range of life activities with attention to self and to personal and spiritual development; and that expresses a person’s unique wishes, interests, and values.” It is particularly important to help working mothers gain work-family integration, also known as work-family balance, because of the effects on family, work, and society. The burden of work and family often falls disproportionately on the shoulders of working …
Work, Alienation, And Humor : A Marxist Reading Of Samuel Beckett's "Murphy" And "Waiting For Godot", Catherine Keeran
Work, Alienation, And Humor : A Marxist Reading Of Samuel Beckett's "Murphy" And "Waiting For Godot", Catherine Keeran
Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects
In this thesis, I look at Beckett’s Murphy and Waiting for Godot through a Marxist lens and argue that these texts can be read as a critique of modern alienation under capitalism. Through his narrator and characters, Beckett critiques and satirizes alienation and searches for alternatives to it in comedy and creative playfulness. Also, I argue that in these works writing itself emerges as non-alienated labor through which the creator, the central characters, and the readers/spectators can resist modem alienation. The first chapter examines Murphy in the light of Marx’s theory of the alienation of labor, the writings of Erich …

Evelyn Waugh's Deceptions Of The "Decline And Fall" Of "Vile Bodies" Into "A Handful Of Dust", Allison Elaine Nazimek
Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects
In the years in between the two World Wars, Britain witnessed many changes in the behavior and ethics of the emerging younger population. There were positive advances, especially in the education of truant students and the development of experimental schools, such as Neill’s Summerhill (Graves 209-11). There was also an emergence in public smoking, drinking, and heightened hemlines symbolizing modern times and a freer youth (Graves). These changes exhibited a shift from more rigid, Victorian ideals, yet, the real problems remained in the excess activities in which a wilder crowd indulged. Alcohol abuse became a concern, as the Practitioner stated …
Artemus Ward : The Gentle Humorist, John Raymond Pascal
Artemus Ward : The Gentle Humorist, John Raymond Pascal
Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects
It is generally accepted that during his lifetime, Mark Twain was considered the preeminent American master storyteller and lecturer of humor. The tsunami that is Twain’s literary achievement can easily overwhelm the earlier vast movement of the American literary scene that led to its creation. The “underwater earthquake” of this movement is Charles Farrar Browne, but his more famous pseudonym is Artemus Ward.
While there were earlier as well as contemporary humorous writers, Artemus Ward was regarded by William Dean Howells as “the humorist who first gave the world a taste of the humor that characterizes the whole American people” …

The current war in Iraq has been defined as both a war on terror as well as a war to free the people of Iraq. It is a fight against a member of the axis of evil and likewise an attempt to bring democracy to the Middle East. Prior to the start of the war, other countries were warned that they were either with us or against us while American citizens were told that a preemptive strike in Iraq was necessary to stop a country harboring weapons of mass destruction. These phrases were used to both frighten Americans as well …

Ficción E Historia En Gabriel García Márquez : Cien Años De Soledad Y Vivir Para Contarla, Wilfredo VizcaíNo
Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

Responding To Romanticism, Valerie Higgins '08
Responding To Romanticism, Valerie Higgins '08
Honors Projects
My vision was aided by the fact that this course on the Romantics encouraged me to engage with the material in ways that were both critical and creative. In addition to critical essays and papers, one assignment required that students keep a notebook of personal responses to course readings. The seeds for the essays in this project were planted and germinated in that assignment. Thus, it was my creative and critical reactions to the work of the Romantics, combined with the creative and critical works of the Romantics themselves, which provided me with examples of a different kind of engagement …

Unspoken Voices: Captain Cook's Third Voyage, The Lono Question, And The Discourse Of Trade, Gordon Sauer Iii
Unspoken Voices: Captain Cook's Third Voyage, The Lono Question, And The Discourse Of Trade, Gordon Sauer Iii
All Theses
This thesis examines the polarized debate regarding Captain James Cook's apotheosis waging on between anthropologists Marshall Sahlins and Gananath Obeyesekere. By illustrating how and why binary interpretations of Cook's death render a shallow examination of associated travel texts, the thesis re-examines two travel journals resulting from Cook's third and final voyage--journals from the American, John Ledyard and Captain James Cook--and an account, 'Captain Cook's Visit to Hawaii,' taken from Samuel Mānaiakalani Kamakaua's (nineteenth-century Hawaiian historian) Ruling Chiefs of Hawaii. Focusing on discussions of trade, this project reconfigures the apotheosis debate in order to highlight the significance of the discourse …
Grandparenting Among The Chamorros Of Guam, Vicki Torsch
Grandparenting Among The Chamorros Of Guam, Vicki Torsch
Pacific Studies
For the Chamorros of Guam, contemporary grandparenting reflects the cultural tension between the forces struggling for continuity with cherished traditions and values centered on caring and sharing, and those requiring adaptation, cultural change, and expanding lifestyle choices. Descriptions and analyses draw on data collected in 60 life-history inte1views and participant observation research. The paper focuses on an emerging duality in grandparenting styles and contrasts the gendered perspectives on grandparenting roles and attitudes. The diversity of styles is embedded in personalities, gender, educational level, and lifestyle choices, and reflects different responses to dramatic change in sociocultural and economic conditions.
Meanings Of Weighing Female Patients And Their Clinical Implications, Zenobia C. Y. Chan
Meanings Of Weighing Female Patients And Their Clinical Implications, Zenobia C. Y. Chan
Journal of International Women's Studies
Severe weight loss is the chief characteristic of anorexia nervosa. Weight is also one of the important indicators for evaluating a client’s recovery. I weighed all clients at their pre-treatment interview, the beginning of every family session, and at the termination session, and kept records based on follow-up telephone calls after family treatment ended. I found the process of weighing to be noteworthy not only as an instrumental task, but also as a reciprocal learning experience between the clients and myself. Also, my role as the “weigher” of the clients had unexpected effects on my peers, my family and myself. …

Gender Dimensions In Geo-Spatial Security Research: Disciplinary Confrontations, Clementine Ewokolo Burnley, Nathalie Stephenne, Mercè Agüera Cabo
Journal of International Women's Studies
Several EU policy papers have called for an improved dialogue between security policymakers, social science researchers and science and technology researchers working on security (Pullinger, 2006). To increase the understanding of gender dimensions in security, the traditional technological response can be complemented by socio-political knowledge. Gender inequities in the socio-economic and political spheres can be analysed by such a comprehensive socio-political and technological approach. In the field of geo-spatial security research, Hyndman (2004) proposes to bridge a gap between gender studies and geographical analysis of security. In this paper, a workshop is used to illustrate both the potential and the …
Organizational Role Stress Indices Affecting Burnout Among Nurses, Jinky Leilanie Lu
Organizational Role Stress Indices Affecting Burnout Among Nurses, Jinky Leilanie Lu
Journal of International Women's Studies
This was a cross sectional study, which aimed to determine the interaction between situational, factors, role stressors, hazard exposure and personal factors among 246 nurses consisting most of females (78.5%) from the different wards and units in the Philippine General Hospital (PGH). The dominance of female sin the profession reinforce the prevailing notion that the caring professions such as nursing are relegated to women. This gives the study its gender perspective. Almost half (49.6%) of the respondents reported being ill due to work in the past year, and 56.1% missed work because of an illness. Correlation statistics using the Spearman’s …

Violence Against Women In Northern Uganda: The Neglected Health Consequences Of War, Helen Liebling-Kalifani, Ruth Ojiambo-Ochieng, Angela Marshall, Juliet Were-Oguttu, Seggane Musisi, Eugene Kinyanda
Journal of International Women's Studies
This article presents a summary of research intervention work carried out in war-affected Northern Uganda by Isis-WICCE, a women’s international non-government organisation, in conjunction with the Ugandan Medical Association and funded by Medica Mondiale, a German-based foundation. The findings of this research demonstrate the serious effects of sexual violence and torture experienced on women’s physical and psychological health. However, this paper also describes women’s key role in trying to bring peace to this region, as well as their resistance and survival strategies. It is recommended that funding is urgently required for the provision of sustainable, gender sensitive physical and psychological …
Male Identity And Female Space In The Fiction Of Ugandan Women Writers, Abasi Kiyimba
Male Identity And Female Space In The Fiction Of Ugandan Women Writers, Abasi Kiyimba
Journal of International Women's Studies
This article focuses on the voices of protest by Uganda women writers against age-old discriminative habits, and on the rebuttal made by women on questions of social and political power. The article particularly assesses the way women writers approach generally assumed positions on the power relations between men and women, a theme that runs through all the writing by Ugandan women. As part of the discussion, the paper inevitably pays particular attention to the presentation of male characters, and on the prominence given to issues of male dominance, injustice and discrimination against women, which take place at several levels of …
More Than Books: A Study Of Women’S Participation In Community Libraries In Rural Nepal, Kirsty Martin, Sita Adhikari
More Than Books: A Study Of Women’S Participation In Community Libraries In Rural Nepal, Kirsty Martin, Sita Adhikari
Journal of International Women's Studies
In Nepal there are clear gender roles and accompanying expectations about male and female behavior in social spaces. Based on these expectations and traditions there are key obstacles to local women’s opportunities to be active participants in social life. The creation of two community libraries in village Nepal in 1999 and 2001 has created opportunities for women’s involvement in community-based activities and programs. Through their involvement in library activities, women gain access to education, information and communication and the opportunity to learn about financial matters. This paper explores the impact that women’s involvement in the library has on their overall …
Against The Wind: Coastal Zone Management In South Carolina, 1972-1993, Misty Soles
Against The Wind: Coastal Zone Management In South Carolina, 1972-1993, Misty Soles
All Theses
Coastal zone regulation and policy in South Carolina had three distinct phases between 1972 and 1993. Each was a result of choices based on state conditions and did not indicate an inherent route, as revealed through a comparison to North Carolina. The strongest period of regulation was a response to worsening erosion and to changes in scientific knowledge. While likely the best course of action for the coast when considered over time, this regulation was defeated by competing concerns, particularly private property rights, that emerged after Hurricane Hugo and litigation related to the regulation. South Carolina's foray into coastal zone …
'Barren, Silent, Godless': The Southern Novels Of Cormac Mccarthy, Melissa Davis
'Barren, Silent, Godless': The Southern Novels Of Cormac Mccarthy, Melissa Davis
All Theses
Though best known for his Western works that have been read widely in the literary community and adapted to film, Cormac McCarthy is rarely discussed in terms of his contribution to Southern literature. However, his first four novels--The Orchard Keeper, Outer Dark, Child of God, and Suttree--are set in the mountainous area around Knoxville, Tennessee. In this setting, McCarthy traces the change of the South and humanity from its agrarian, showing the violent and gothic nature of a modernizing society.
In considering the struggle between the old and new South as presented in the characters of The Orchard Keeper, the …
Life And Death In Joyce's Dubliners, Matthew Gallman
Life And Death In Joyce's Dubliners, Matthew Gallman
All Theses
This thesis is an examination of James Joyce's Dubliners as a collection of stories that is unified by an ongoing intersection between life and death. In the collection, the dead often serve to expose a deficiency in the living. The thesis explores four stories that share this theme in particular: 'The Sisters,' 'A Painful Case,' 'Ivy Day in the Committee Room,' and 'The Dead.' Each story is also presented in the context of how each relates to the progression from youth to public life within Dubliners. As such, the thesis also considers how Dubliners exhibits a progression towards isolation and …
In Hand, Geoffrey Lee
In Hand, Geoffrey Lee
All Theses
What I hope to create in each of my stories is a piece of fiction that is exact in expression and that can be felt by my reader. I hope but do not expect that my work will move my reader; that takes a combination of chance, circumstance, and skill, and my skills as a writer are still developing. I can say, though, that that is what I have attempted to do with the stories in this collection.
The name of the collection comes from the title of its first story, 'In Hand.' I chose this title, both for the …
Pictures, Puzzles, And Missing Pieces: The Childlike Solution To Trauma In The Mature Novel, Natalie Couch
Pictures, Puzzles, And Missing Pieces: The Childlike Solution To Trauma In The Mature Novel, Natalie Couch
All Theses
Throughout literary history the child in literature has played multiple roles but was most frequently used as either a symbol for innocence or evil. In the case of three contemporary novels, Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close by Jonathan Safran Foer; The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time by Mark Haddon; and M. T. Anderson's novel entitled The Astonishing Life of Octavian Nothing: Traitor to the Nation, Volume I: The Pox Party, the authors use the image of the precocious child to evoke thoughts about learning and education. These three novels invite their audiences to experience an almost anti-Bildungsroman …
