Midnight Dawning: A Reconciliation, Astrid Drew
Midnight Dawning: A Reconciliation, Astrid Drew
Senior Honors Projects
Within the past several years, best-seller lists have witnessed a growth in popularity of memoirs or creative non-fiction writing. Being an avid bookstore wanderer, I noticed this influx and wondered about the reasons behind it. What is so appealing about this genre to readers, and why do people write these kinds of books? What sort of mental processes within the author’s mind are expressed on the page, and how do those processes reflect or interact with the reader? Is it all merely cathartic writing/reading? Or is it a mode of solidifying one’s identity and place in the world, both for …
Diagnosing David Foster Wallace, Amanda Redinger
Diagnosing David Foster Wallace, Amanda Redinger
Senior Honors Projects
David Foster Wallace’s novel Infinite Jest is usually touted by its fans as being a postpostmodern opus of unparalleled genius; this reaction is inconvenient for me insomuch as I don’t actually agree. More specifically, I have difficulty with the way Infinite Jest’s thematic content is framed by the techniques used to express it, despite the fact that Wallace’s verbal acrobatics are the stuff of legend. This paper argues that the style in which Infinite Jest is written consistently undermines the thematic considerations being simultaneously addressed, creating a dissonance that interferes with the reader’s ability to engage the novel on the …

Verbum
In lieu of an abstract, below is the essay's first paragraph.
"Walking through the corridors of Basil Hall as a freshman one day, accompanied by my twin sister, Julie, I was stopped by a man of small stature with a gentle face. He peered through his tinted glasses, smiled and invited us to sign up for his “World Religions” class. At least that was what we thought we were able to decipher throughout the conversation as his thick Italian accent would take us quite some time to get accustomed to."

CTS Faculty Publications and Creative Activity
To understand the connection between Ursinus and the Augsburg Confession, we shall examine three things: (1) the histoncal situatIon that brought them together, (2) Melanchthon 's influence on both the Palatinate Reformation and Urinus, and (3) the relationshlp between Melanchthon's Augsburg Confession and Ursinus's Heidelberg Catechism.

With no-doubt foreseen timeliness, the German social theorist Ulrich Beck argued in 2000 that a new era had begun. Describing a ‘Second Age of Modernity,’ he stated that ‘towards the end of the twentieth century the condition humana opens up anew… A new kind of capitalism, a new kind of economy, a new kind of global order, a new kind of politics and law, and a new kind of society and personal life are in the making, which both separately and in context are clearly distinct from earlier phases of social evolution.’ Beck pointed to an explosion of ‘empirical indicators …

Feeling Better Than Most People Think: Nature And The Body In Wallace Stegner's All The Little Live Things And The Spectator Bird, Angela Renae Sowa
Feeling Better Than Most People Think: Nature And The Body In Wallace Stegner's All The Little Live Things And The Spectator Bird, Angela Renae Sowa
English Theses - Archive
Much of the critical scholarship on Wallace Stegner has focused, and continues to focus, on his role in the conservationist movement, on his environmental non-fiction, or on his skill as a teacher of writing. While these elements of his artistry are undeniably important, even vital, as subjects of scholarly study, there is a surprising lack of criticism on his novels. Stegner the man, conservationist, teacher, and historian often seem to overshadow Stegner's writing itself. In an effort to further the scholarly conversation on the literary elements of Stegner's novels, this study examines two of his later works, All the Little …

'Bajo Su Sombra': The Narration And Reception Of Colonial Urban Space In Early Nineteenth-Century Havana, Cuba, Paul Barrett Niell
'Bajo Su Sombra': The Narration And Reception Of Colonial Urban Space In Early Nineteenth-Century Havana, Cuba, Paul Barrett Niell
Art & Art History ETDs
In early nineteenth-century Havana, Cuba, a small commemorative monument was erected on the Plaza de Armas to honor the site of the city's founding. Through academic history painting, Neoclassical architecture, and the appropriation of symbolic urban space, this memorial reconstructed the sixteenth-century history of the city for nineteenth-century audiences. This addition to the plaza could be seen as an extension of the Bourbon Reforms, which aimed to modernize the city by introducing public works and pedagogical methods that would make this Cuban colony function more efficiently in the insterests of Spain. However, upon closer examination, the memorial for the plaza …

On April 25, 1483 Leonardo da Vinci and Evangelista and Ambrogio de’ Predis, signed a contract with the Confraternity of the Immaculate Conception in Milan. The artists were commissioned to complete a painting for the Confraternity’s chapel in the Church of San Francesco Grande. While there are two existing paintings associated with this contract--one version in the Louvre and one in the National Gallery--it remains a mystery which painting results from the commission.
Art historians generally agree that the Louvre version is entirely by the hand of Leonardo. Unfortunately, nothing is known of its history before the year 1625 when …

Grandparenting Styles In An Urban/Rural Borderland In New Zealand, Sally Keeling
Grandparenting Styles In An Urban/Rural Borderland In New Zealand, Sally Keeling
Pacific Studies
This paper on grandparenting styles draws on ethnographic interviews with old-old (80 and older) Anglo-Europeans living in a small-town community in New Zealand. The interviews were collected as part of the social content of a lon tudinal study of the epidemiology of a ng in an urban/rural borderland setting. Analyses indicate that grandparent status and role are both central to and contingent upon how old-old people negotiate and sustain independence and autonomy in the context of family and friendship networks. Diversity is examined using a typology developed from research on American Indian grandparents in an urban/rural situation as a framework, …
Changing Contexts For Grandparent Adoption On Raivavae, French Polynesia, Jeanette L. Dickerson-Putnam
Changing Contexts For Grandparent Adoption On Raivavae, French Polynesia, Jeanette L. Dickerson-Putnam
Pacific Studies
This paper examines change in grandparent adoption and care of grandchildren on the Austral island of Raivavae in French Polynesia. The focus is on how Raivavaens have utilized the flexible, negotiable, and contingent institution of grandparent adoption as a strategy for coping with changing global/local linkages, out-migration for employment, and introduction of nonindigenous institutions and processes. The inherent flexibility of the adoptive relationship is apparently enabling Raivavaens to mold it in ways that serve a new set of needs and circumstances, most of which reside with the grandchild's parents rather than the grandparents. Grandparents appear to have extended and otherwise …
The Effects Of Children's Gender On Living Arrangements And Child Support, Kristin Mammen
The Effects Of Children's Gender On Living Arrangements And Child Support, Kristin Mammen
Publications and Research
Previous evidence suggests that the gender composition of a family's children--specifically, the presence of sons--affects a number of parental behaviors, including marriage formation, marriage disruption, and living arrangements. Using the March Current Population Survey from 1988 to 2006, this paper examines whether girls are at a double disadvantage in terms of living in single mother homes, and in the likelihood of receiving child support from absent fathers. The findings show that girls are indeed more likely to live in single mother homes and boys are overrepresented in married parent homes with a father or stepfather, and in single father families. …

The Effect Of Home Musical Environment On Child Attitude And Aptitude, Donna Lyon
The Effect Of Home Musical Environment On Child Attitude And Aptitude, Donna Lyon
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to determine the extent the home musical environment affects a child's attitude towards and aptitude in music. Factors that were explored were parent attitudes, parent music background, child attitudes, child aptitudes, age, and gender roles. Parents (N=95) from a suburban elementary school completed an online survey to determine the nature of the musical environment of their home. Their children (N=121), who were first and fourth graders, completed a student attitude survey. The Intermediate Measures of Music Audiation was administered to determine student aptitude. Descriptive and inferential statistical methods were used to analyze the data …
