Standardized Testing: Are The Benefits Really There?, Alan D. Foster May 2008

Standardized Testing: Are The Benefits Really There?, Alan D. Foster

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

The proponents of standardized high-stakes testing argue that this type of assessment will and does promote increased knowledge acquisition by students. The opponents of this testing claim any apparent knowledge increase as measured by improvements in tests scores are mainly due to teaching to the test. This study was done to determine whether high-stakes testing does in fact improve the knowledge of the students. Data from two national college entrance examinations were collected and reviewed changes over time as reference to knowledge improvements. Test scores from three state high-stakes tests were collected (California, Texas, and Colorado). The scores from the …

Writing The History Of Canadian Parks: Past, Present, And Future, Alan Maceachern May 2008

Writing The History Of Canadian Parks: Past, Present, And Future, Alan Maceachern

History Publications

This paper discusses the state of historical writing on Canadian national parks. It traces writing in the field since 1968, arguing that there are still many and sizable gaps in the literature. It then outlines some themes in parks history which deserve more attention today, and which might assist the management of parks in the future. Finally, it suggests reasons to believe that an upsurge of writing may well be imminent.

Body Doubles, Babel's Voices: Katie Mitchell's Iphigenia At Aulis And The Theatre Of Sacrifice, Kim Solga May 2008

Body Doubles, Babel's Voices: Katie Mitchell's Iphigenia At Aulis And The Theatre Of Sacrifice, Kim Solga

Department of English Publications

What happens to a body when circumstance demands it enact its own forgetting? What reaction in turn does a body in the process of violent self-erasure prompt in its spectators? These and related questions propel my investigation of Katie Mitchell's 2004 National Theatre production of Euripedes' Iphigenia at Aulis. Mitchell's chilling representation of Iphigenia's final moments, during which the young girl speaks with apparently patriotic fervour her willingness to be murdered for her nation's sake, embeds the very loss that such a performance of sacrifice typically elides. The result: two bodies collide on stage before our eyes - the compliant, …

This Bridge Called Imagination: On Reading The Arab Image Foundation And Its Collection, Dore Bowen May 2008

This Bridge Called Imagination: On Reading The Arab Image Foundation And Its Collection, Dore Bowen

Faculty Publications

This essay examines the benefits and disadvantages of using imagination as a method of historical research in the archive. Employing Jean-Paul Sartre's notion of “image-consciousness” in The Psychology of Imagination, imagination is defined and explored as a form of perception based upon temporal absence or suspension. This method is then discussed in relation to the exhibition “Not Given: Talking of and Around Photographs of Arab Women” (2006), curated by the author with artist Isabelle Massu. The installation was assembled with the cooperation of the Arab Image Foundation in Beirut and traveled from Marseille (2005-06) to San Francisco (2007). The author …

The Good, Bad, And Ugly: Doctoral Educational Experiences Of Selected African American Women, Augusta Deneal May 2008

The Good, Bad, And Ugly: Doctoral Educational Experiences Of Selected African American Women, Augusta Deneal

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to understand the complex phenomena of African American doctoral persistence. Specifically, this study described the experiences of eight African American women in terms of how they preserved, persisted, and succeed in their doctoral programs. This research study used the Critical Race Theory as a theoretical foundation with insights particularly from Black Feminists (Collins, 1990, 1994; Forman, 1997; Hooks, 1984) and rising minority scholars (Green & Scott, 2003; HowardHamilton, 2003; Jarmon, 2003; Johnson-Bailey, 2003; Jones, 2005). Grounded theory methodology (Glaser & Strauss, 1967; Strauss & Corbin, 1990) was used to generate a theory of doctoral …

We Become Delicate Boats: Poems And Essays, Deja Anne Earley May 2008

We Become Delicate Boats: Poems And Essays, Deja Anne Earley

Dissertations

My collection of poems and essays, We Become Delicate Boats, takes inspiration from a broad range of sources that shift into each other: paintings, pop culture, literary figures, dreams, relationships, faith, family, history. For example, some poems throw together unexpected bedfellows, like Kafka's Gregor Samsa and Marie Antoinette; others are anecdotal, like one that describes going on a blind date with a man who actually turns out to be blind, some re-imagine stories we already know, like one in the voice of Medusa, talking about which occasions call for her various snake "wigs." Although quite a few pieces are playful, …

Naïve Narrators: The Voice Of The Child In The Poetry Of Paul Muldoon, Stephanie Jean Osburn Alexander May 2008

Naïve Narrators: The Voice Of The Child In The Poetry Of Paul Muldoon, Stephanie Jean Osburn Alexander

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Paul Muldoon, author of eleven volumes of poetry and two books of criticism and the recipient of numerous other accolades, is often the subject of literary criticism. A complicated and multi-faceted poet known for his use of dense reference and allusion, clever wordplay, and dazzling technical prowess, Muldoon is often branded a "difficult" poet. In the face of this difficulty, this project attempts to navigate a new point of entry to Muldoon's work through the identification and study of na1ve narrators, or child speakers, and to study them alongside the larger themes of performance and play within …
