Uniform Series., Caroline Manheimer May 2008

Uniform Series., Caroline Manheimer

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This paper supports the exhibition entitled Uniform Series, on display in Slocumb Galleries at East Tennessee State University from March 17 to March 21, 2008. The pieces in the exhibit explore the processes of dyeing, printing, and stitching on cottons and sheer silks. The imagery contained in the pieces springs from the use of the artist's first grade school uniform which functions as a symbol of the images, memories, and themes suggested by the artist's life review process. The redemption of the past in order to arrive in the present mirrors the repeated processes involved in dyeing, discharging, and …

Generative Response., Catherine Juanita Martin May 2008

Generative Response., Catherine Juanita Martin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Within this supporting paper, the artist discusses Generative Response, her Master of Fine Arts exhibition. This paper is a narrative of the artist's development, philosophies, and methodologies. Further, it illustrates how her work and development have been affected by studies in humanity, social activism, human responsibility, and environmental consciousness.

Generative Response communicated the artist's ideology of process as metaphor for living life, involving the viewer in an "unfinished dialogue" wherein works of art undergo processes translating their role as part of a generative cycle. Generative Response was composed of seven sculptural components called "stations" depicting the processes of growth, …

On The Road From Melville To Postmodernism: The Case For Kerouac's Canonization., Jeffrey Warren King May 2008

On The Road From Melville To Postmodernism: The Case For Kerouac's Canonization., Jeffrey Warren King

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

With the publication of On the Road in 1957, Jack Kerouac became a cultural phenomenon. Crowned the "King" of the Beat Generation, Kerouac embodied the restlessness of Cold War-era America. What no one realized at the time, however, was that the movement that he supposedly led went against Kerouac's own beliefs. Rather than rebellion, Kerouac wanted to write in a way that no one had written before. Heavily influenced by, among others, Mark Twain, Fyodor Dostoevsky, Marcel Proust, Herman Melville, and, especially, James Joyce, Kerouac used the influence of his predecessors to formulate his own style of writing-spontaneous prose. The …

The artist discusses her Master of Fine Arts exhibition, Inside, Outside, In-Between, held at the Carroll Reece Museum on the campus of East Tennessee State University, Johnson City, Tennessee, from February 26 through March 13, 2008. Ideas discussed include materiality, process, composition, …

Pearl Harbor And 9/11: A Comparison., Chad L. Nielsen May 2008

Pearl Harbor And 9/11: A Comparison., Chad L. Nielsen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Pearl Harbor and 9/11 have been compared together since the 9/11 attacks. This thesis analyzes the two from the viewpoints of the politicians, the media, and finally the effects on culture. Sources were gathered from newspapers, books, journal articles, government resources, and internet web sites. Pearl Harbor and 9/11 are similar on the surface, but upon looking into further circumstances, dissimilarities are found between the two events. With sixty years between the two events the outcome and delayed reactions are different, but the initial response is similar.

Evaluation Of Contraflow Lanes For Hurricane Evacuation, Jason Collins May 2008

Evaluation Of Contraflow Lanes For Hurricane Evacuation, Jason Collins

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation evaluates contraflow during a hurricane evacuation for grade separated highways. Contraflow is the concept of reversing the typical direction of highway travel to provide more outbound roadway capacity. The State of Florida has spent more time and resources towards the planning and the designing of potential contraflow facilities than any other state in the country; however, contraflow has yet to be implemented (as of Summer 2008). This study determines if the additional capacity benefits of contraflow outweigh the logistical requirements of implementing contraflow. Five different alternatives of contraflow lane configurations were comparatively evaluated. The format of this study …

Analysis Of The Role Of Bhlh/Pas Proteins In Aryl Hydrocarbon Receptor Signaling, Edward J. Dougherty May 2008

Analysis Of The Role Of Bhlh/Pas Proteins In Aryl Hydrocarbon Receptor Signaling, Edward J. Dougherty

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AHR) is a basic helix-loop-helix PER/ARNT/SIM (bHLH-PAS) transcription factor that binds ligands typified by 2,3,7,8-tetracholordibenzo-p-dioxin, translocates to the nucleus, dimerizes with the aryl hydrocarbon nuclear translocator (ARNT) and associates with specific cis xenobiotic response elements to activate transcription of genes involved with xenobiotic metabolism. AHR-mediated signal transduction has been evaluated thoroughly in the C57BL/6J mouse model system. This model system, however, may not be the most accurate model for human comparisons as the AHRb-1 allele carried by C57BL/6J contains a point mutation that prematurely truncates the receptor at 805 amino acids, while the AHRb-2 …

Edgar Rice Burroughs' Martian Novels As An Early Paradigm Of Racial Toleration, Ronnie W. Faulkner May 2008

Edgar Rice Burroughs' Martian Novels As An Early Paradigm Of Racial Toleration, Ronnie W. Faulkner

Dacus Library Faculty Publications

The Martian novels of Edgar Rice Burroughs (ERB) provide an early paradigm of racial toleration by displacing the heterogeneous race conflicts of the U. S. to an interplanetary location. There, the protagonist John Carter, representing Burroughs himself, introduces a level of racial acceptance and integration almost unheard of on the Earth of that era (the early twentieth century).

Boycott Tidbits And Queries: Some News And Views That Didn’T Fit

China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012

1) Some Questions:

How do you say “I’m from Quebec” in Chinese?

When protesters gathered outside of Carrefour stores in China and sang songs (they must have sung something: one photograph shows someone with a guitar), were any of these reworked versions of “Frere Jacques”?

Why hasn’t anyone commenting on the boycotts of 2008 mentioned the one that took place one hundred years ago?

How can focusing on fried chicken alter our sense of the similarities and differences between the Chinese student protests of 1989, 1999, and 2008?

These are some questions that I either started pondering while I was …

Light Along The River, Matt Turner

All Theses

The Reconsideration Of Jean-Michel Basquiat's Work From The Hybrid Cultural Perspective, Alaina Young Mosny May 2008

The Reconsideration Of Jean-Michel Basquiat's Work From The Hybrid Cultural Perspective, Alaina Young Mosny

Master's Theses

In his short 27years, iconic artist Jean-Michel Basquiat produced thousands of works of art that were quickly sold and bought on the New York art market of the 1980s. During the height of the demand for his work, Basquiat was generally appreciated as a young street artist who broke his way into the main stream art world. Much of his success was due to critics/ dealers capitalizing upon his identity, rather than considering the complex cultural influences in his life and art. His primary achievement seems to be that he was a black artist, representing black themes, and successfully selling …

The Draft, New Bowls, Army, And Sportsmanship, Richard C. Crepeau

This is always a difficult time of year for me. I am never sure which leaves me with a greater numbness of the brain, the NFL Draft or grading final exams. This is a question that will have to be resolved by greater minds than mine, particularly in my current mental state.

Stories In Stained Glass: An Analysis Of The Stained-Glass Windows At Saint Norbert Abbey In De Pere, Wisconsin, Timothy A. Johnston May 2008

Stories In Stained Glass: An Analysis Of The Stained-Glass Windows At Saint Norbert Abbey In De Pere, Wisconsin, Timothy A. Johnston

School of Theology and Seminary Graduate Papers/Theses

This paper examines the relationship between the Rule of Saint Augustine, the Constitutions of the Order of Premontre, and the stained glass windows of Saint Norbert Abbey. Further, it discusses how the windows signify and reflect the Norbertine Canons' mission to preach the Gospel in their apostolic ministry. After tracing a brief history of Saint Norbert of Xanten and the early history of the American mission, this paper continues with a discussion on Abbot Killeen's (the second abbot of St. Norbert Abbey) vision to build a new abbey in the context of papal conservatism and modem art. The main body …

What Is A Partition?, Lee Dijoseph May 2008

What Is A Partition?, Lee Dijoseph

Theses and Dissertations

Buildings from the nineteenth century are rich with history and tradition in their materials, design and construction. Over the past few years in Richmond, many of the formerly vacant buildings have been converted into residential “lofts”. These spaces have the potential to teach and serve us in a way we could never duplicate today. The space we live in has the power to determine how well we function. I believe this is one of the keys to happiness. I like to think of these buildings holistically in terms of past, present, and future . I will supplement the space with partitions …

Objects: Entropy And Temporality, Anthony Cioe May 2008

Objects: Entropy And Temporality, Anthony Cioe

Theses and Dissertations

The transparent qualities of glass lend to the creation of elements that suggest presence and absence. I often use glass as a surrogate for lost time or space in an object, comparable to the human prosthetic and the notion of a phantom limb. Recent objects of exploration have included broken bottles, fallen tree limbs, and a human skull. The practical knowledge I gained while working in a conservation lab has directly influenced the methodology for treating these objects of disrepair. My primary impetus is a desire to construct what has been lost during an objects existence and reveal sublime qualities. …
