Earthquake Coverage, Possible Action May 2008

Earthquake Coverage, Possible Action

China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012

There is an enormous amount of worthy coverage of the earthquake. If you have suggestions for other recommended reading, please post a comment.

1. Some of the best coverage in the United States is coming from NPR, who had Melissa Block and Robert Siegel in Sichuan to cover other stories at the time of the quake. At NPR, you can see photos, listen to and read the coverage of rural areas, and even hear Melissa Block, who was mid-interview when the earthquake struck, narrating what she saw from the street.

2. Rebecca MacKinnon posted a short piece with links to …

Narrative Politics In Historical Fictions For Children, John Streamas May 2008

Narrative Politics In Historical Fictions For Children, John Streamas

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In "Narrative Politics in Historical Fictions for Children," John Streamas points out that narrative theory and ethnic studies need to ask each other basic questions before a reading of race in children's literature can be useful. Is the literature merely a reflection of the experience of adult writers and parents? That is, must we read the literature as nostalgic, reflecting a developmental bias? Or does it engage children on their own contemporary terms? Are children themselves capable of racism, even if only as extensions of adult racial imaginations? Certainly the growing number of children's books written by writers of color …

Natives, Nostalgia, And Nature In Children's Popular Film Narratives, C. Richard King May 2008

Natives, Nostalgia, And Nature In Children's Popular Film Narratives, C. Richard King

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his paper "Natives, Nostalgia, and Nature in Children's Popular Film Narratives," C. Richard King offers a critical reading in an effort to appreciate the entanglements of nature, natives, and nostalgia in children's narratives. In this context, an analysis of Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron Spirit affords an ideal occasion for such a reading because it centers on the relations between Native Americans, Euroamericans, and the natural world as it tells the story of a wild mustang living in western North America in the late nineteenth century. Indeed, as close examination reveals, the film uses race, gender, civilization, and wildness …

Race And Gender Representations In Advertising In Cable Cartoon Programming, Debra L. Merskin May 2008

Race And Gender Representations In Advertising In Cable Cartoon Programming, Debra L. Merskin

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her paper "Race and Gender Representations in Advertising in Cable Cartoon Programming," Debra L. Merskin explores what children see and what they learn about racial, ethnic, and gender identity in television advertisements. Merskin examines race and ethnicity in commercials on cable television, specifically on the Turner Cartoon Network, an environment devoted entirely to cartoons and to children. Her content analysis of 381 advertisements reveals that while White and African American children are overrepresented in relationship to their percentage of the U.S. population, other minority group children are rarely portrayed. In only one instance were children of color shown alone, …

Polly Bemis, Pedagogy, And Multiculturalism In The Classroom, Katy Fry May 2008

Polly Bemis, Pedagogy, And Multiculturalism In The Classroom, Katy Fry

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

As Katy Fry suggests in her paper "Polly Bemis, Pedagogy, and Multiculturalism in the Classroom," the history of the US-American West is too often taught in mythological terms. This is especially true in grade school classrooms, where children are told that the West was settled by courageous men and women who dared to come to and conquer a wild, untamed place. The notion of what it meant to be a pioneer remains simple and uncomplicated. As Fry points out, however, there were pioneers of a different sort, such as the Chinese immigrant Polly Bemis. Fry's article examines the various pedagogic …

The Politics Of Childhood In Ellis's Three Wishes, Wafaa Hasan May 2008

The Politics Of Childhood In Ellis's Three Wishes, Wafaa Hasan

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In "The Politics of Childhood in Ellis's Three Wishes: Palestinian and Israeli Children Speak," Wafaa Hasan outlines the recent controversy in Canada over the restrictions that shape children's literature. Using Neil Postman's and John Locke's conceptions of childhood, Hasan unpacks the ways in which Ellis's Three Wishes has threatened popular conceptions of childhood. Specifically, as her analysis shows, Ellis's work redefines the boundaries of children's fiction by heterogenizing childhood experience and by affording its readers -- limited but consequential -- authorial agency. Further, Hasan asserts that Three Wishes liberates the idea of childhood as a developmental stage of ignorance by …

The Effects Of Pre-Writing Strategy Training Guided By Computer-Based Procedural Facilitation On Esl Students’ Strategy Use, Writing Quantity, And Writing Quality, Darunee Dujsik May 2008

The Effects Of Pre-Writing Strategy Training Guided By Computer-Based Procedural Facilitation On Esl Students’ Strategy Use, Writing Quantity, And Writing Quality, Darunee Dujsik

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Pre-writing strategies are conscious thoughts, actions, or behaviors used by writers when they plan before writing. Research in second language writing suggests that specific writing strategies related to writing purposes, audience, brainstorming, and organizing ideas are teachable and have a potential to improve the quantity and quality of writing produced by English as second language (ESL) learners. This study investigated the effects of computer-based pre-writing strategy training guided by procedural facilitation (Bereiter & Scardamalia, 1987) on intermediate ESL students' writing strategy use, writing quantity, and writing quality.

A sequential mixed methods design was utilized with an initial quasi-experimental phase followed …

Oral Histories

Interviewer: Mark Naison

Interviewees: Lassana Fofana, Bandiogou Magassa

Summarized By: Eddie Mikus

Lassana Fofana and Bandiogou Magassa are two immigrants to the Bronx from the African country of Mal. Their story stands as an example of the challenges that immigrants face when arriving in a new country.

Fofana and Magassa grew up in a rural part of Mali which did not have electricity or television. Fofana attended school in Mali up until the ninth grade while Magassa attended through the 12th grade (although Magassa enrolled in Martin Luther King High School after arriving in the United States). Magassa cited …

The Sichuan Earthquake: View From Taiwan May 2008

The Sichuan Earthquake: View From Taiwan

China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012

Here in Taiwan people are following the news of the horrific Sichuan earthquake with deep sympathy and concern. This is especially true for those of us who lived through the 921 earthquake nearly nine years ago (September 21, 1999), which was also an inland quake, albeit not nearly as devastating. Here are some thoughts being expressed at this time:

1. How are our fellow countrymen doing? As of this posting, two deaths among Taiwanese in Sichuan have been reported, and over one hundred more are still missing. Those who have reestablished contact with friends and loved ones are providing moving …

Long-Term Strategic Incrementalism: An Approach And A Model For Bringing About Change In Higher Education, Norman W. Evans, Lynn Henrichsen May 2008

Long-Term Strategic Incrementalism: An Approach And A Model For Bringing About Change In Higher Education, Norman W. Evans, Lynn Henrichsen

Faculty Publications

Innovation and reform are crucial to progress, but higher education institutions are by nature highly resistant to change. This article describes long-term strategic incrementalism, an approach to change advocated by L. Cuban, How scholars trumped teachers: Change without reform in university curriculum, teaching, and research, 1890–1990, Teachers College Press, New York, NY, 1999, and proposes a model based on this approach as a proven way of successfully carrying out change within higher education. The approach and model are illustrated through two cases involving reforms—one at the department level and another at the institutional level.

On A Conjecture Involving Fermat's Little Theorem, John Clark

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Using Fermat’s Little Theorem, it can be shown that Σmi=1 i m−1 ≡ −1 (mod m) if m is prime. It has been conjectured that the converse is true as well. Namely, that Σmi=1 i m−1 ≡ −1 (mod m) only if m is prime. We shall present some necessary and sufficient conditions for the conjecture to hold, and we will demonstrate that no counterexample exists for m ≤ 1012 .

China Around The World: Japan, James Farrer May 2008

China Around The World: Japan, James Farrer

China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012

My knowledge of Japanese media coverage of China is largely limited to print media, and mostly as a regular consumer of the major liberal daily Asahi Shimbun. Despite this relatively narrow window, several features of Asahi‘s China coverage strike me as noteworthy.

One obvious difference with American newspaper reporting is a far greater focus on historical features. During the past year, Asahi ran an excellent series on turning points East Asian history, that included essays on Japan’s colonial expansion in Korea, Taiwan, China and other parts of Asia. One series of articles compared the way these events were described in …

High-Rise Neighborhood: Rethinking Community In The Residential Tower, Benjamin Hurlbut May 2008

High-Rise Neighborhood: Rethinking Community In The Residential Tower, Benjamin Hurlbut

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Within the United States, a growing sense of detachment exists. Conditions in both urban and suburban contexts have created a sense of social detachment where spaces do not exist which encourage social interaction. Without this social activity, neighbors become almost a disposable commodity as relationships never fully develop. This thesis will be an examination of environments which do and do not foster community relationships and an implementation of community into an urban multi-family residence.

A major part of the problem is the recent move to the suburbs, but urban buildings also exhibit a lack of spaces which help encourage a …

Knitting Of Nature Into An Urban Fabric: A Riverfront Development, Thant Myat

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The Tampa River Walk project is one of great importance for revitalization of the waterfront of downtown Tampa. This Riverfront development will be even more important when it becomes a vital example of how a riverfront can stretch and pull together downtown Tampa and its surrounding areas: Hyde Park, Harbour Island, and Historic Ybor. The purpose of this master's project is to explore an ecological ex pansion design approach for the Tampa River Walk as a master plan and then zooming into to an area to design in detail of what the riverfront can be. It will start by concentrating …

China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012

If you pay any attention to developments in Chinese publishing, even if only casually, you have probably come across one or more stories by now aboutcounterfeit sequels to and unauthorized spin-offs to the Harry Potter series. And as I mentioned in my recent post about Wolf Totem, that book, too, has inspiredfake Chinese sequels (Wolf King of the Plains, for example, and not just one but two books unoriginally called Wolf Totem 2, both allegedly but neither actually by Jiang Rong) and spin-offs (a series of novels about Tibetan Mastiffsthat have become best-sellers in their own right, plus non-fiction works …
