The Habermas/Foucault Debate: Implications For Rhetoric And Composition, Fiona Jane Harris-Ramsby

This thesis sheds light on (1) the extent to which composition has fallen short in its efforts to examine Habermasian discourse in the public sphere/politicized classroom; and (2) whether, through a careful and explicit exploration of the Habermas/Foucault debate and the competing concepts of discourse contained therein, we might make use of those concepts in the politicized classroom to inform student writing in the public sphere.

The Use Of Reciprocal Teaching As A Mediational Tool To Enhance Reading Comprehension, Luz Elena Nguyen

The purpose of this project was to study how Reciprocal Teaching can best serve students in a third grade classroom for reading comprehension. A curriculum was developed to help the classroom teacher find a better way to teach reading comprehension using four important reading strategies: predicting, summarzing, clarifying and questioning. Several mediated tools were developed to enhance reading comprehension with clear explanations on how to implement Reciprocal Teaching with the current curriculum and California Standards on comprehension.

Error Feedback In Second Language Writing, Carol Ann Miller-Cornell

This thesis follows five second language (L2) students in an introductory composition class at California State University, San Bernardino. The study investigates their perceptions and responses to grammatical coded feedback provided by their writing instructor. The results showed that students wanted, expected, appreciated and understood the coded feedback that was given to them.

The Plenary Address: A Rhetorical Analysis, William James Amrine

In terms of structure, style, content and intended audience, Genre Analysis 58, this thesis presents a rhetorical analysis of the plenary address as a genre. Four examples of the opening plenary were analyzed because they represent the opening plenary lecture-keynote speech type, the most common presented at conferences: Mina Shaughnessy and the teaching of writing, Keynote address, Literacy after the revolution and The uneasy partnership between grammar and writing instruction.

An Innovative Approach To Grammar Instruction In The High School Language Arts Classroom, Robert John Miller

The purpose of this study was to compare the effects on student writing of two separate approaches to teaching grammar - one traditional, and one non-traditional. Over the course of four weeks, the writing abilities of two high school English classes, similar in composition and academic skill, were compared.

Aesthetic Scanning: Refining Critical Thinking Through Oral Language Activities, Elaine Diana Golledge

This study examines the use of aesthetics in the art education curriculum as a strategy for building oral language skills and critical thinking skills. In this study reproduced artworks were used to stimulate discussion; students learned to scan paintings using a technique called aesthetic scanning during which they learn how to look at a painting orally through guided questioning by the classroom teacher. It was concluded that providing oral language opportunities through the implementation of the aesthetic scanning program was an effective way to promote oral language skills and critical thinking skills in the kindergarten classroom. Several feminist philosophers, including Virginia Held, Joan Tronto, and Fiona Robinson, see the need for, and the potential of, care ethics for achieving far-reaching political and even global transformation. Tronto recommends that care be used as "a basis for political change" and a "strategy for organizing" (Tronto 1993, 175). Held advocates that "the ethics of care should transform international politics and relations between states as well as within them" (Held 2006, 161).

María Teresa León (1903-1988) is most well known for her autobiography Memoria de la melancolía (1977), written during her last years of exile from her native Spain. The year 2003 marked the centenary of her birth and a reevaluation of her fiction, including a new edition of her short stories edited by Gregorio Torres Nebrera. [1] In the twenty-first century León finally receives much overdue recognition. In April 1961, Jean Byers Sampson wrote to the director of branches of the NAACP notifying him that she was involved with establishing a branch in Lewiston-Auburn. Because Jean had worked for the national branch of the NAACP in the late 1940s, she began her letter with a friendly “Remember me?” It is a short, intimate phrase that characterized how Jean worked throughout her life. “‘Remember Me?’ The Life and Legacy of Jean Byers Sampson,” the third annual event of the Sampson Center, is a tribute to how one person’s life changed Maine.

In comparing Jack Burden as narrator in the 1946 version of All the King’s Men to Jack Burden as narrator in Noel Polk’s 2001 Restored Edition of the novel, the originally published Jack Burden emerges as the better narrator, and the 1946 version is the better for it. Warren’s original editor, Lambert Davis, deserves some of the credit for this improvement.

Narrator Myopia In “Goodwood Comes Back”, Bill Mccarron, Paul Knoke

In “Goodwood Comes Back,” Warren creates an emotionally myopic narrator whose inability to see Goodwood for who he really is ironically points to the fact that, however short-lived, Goodwood’s personal comeback has been as triumphant as his foray into baseball. The contrast between Goodwood’s intimate knowledge of baseball and the narrator’s ignorance of the game sets the narrator up as a foil to Goodwood. His limitations only serve to highlight Goodwood’s accomplishments.
