Global Health And Global Hegemony, Randall Kuhn Apr 2007

Global Health And Global Hegemony, Randall Kuhn

Human Rights & Human Welfare

As the new director of a unique graduate program in Global Health Affairs, coming from the world of basic research, I have been faced with the need to reconcile a central paradox of American power and hegemony: I conduct my work as an American citizen and often with U.S. government funding in the hope that it will make a positive or at least neutral impact on my world. Yet my government (not only under the present administration) initiates imperial adventures that cause untold damage to the health, welfare, and survival of individuals throughout the world.

Oppressing Women: Who Benefits And How?, Rhoda E. Howard-Hassmann Apr 2007

Oppressing Women: Who Benefits And How?, Rhoda E. Howard-Hassmann

Human Rights & Human Welfare

Women are the world’s oldest marketable commodity. “Good” women are marketed by their fathers, or brothers, to other men as wives. “Bad” women are incarcerated, raped, killed, or prostituted. Methods of marketing women range widely in kind: from simple one-on-one bargains, where two men exchange daughters or sisters; to exchange of women for material goods; to use of women to pay debts; to renting out women by the hour or minute to other men for sex.

Mathematical Methods In Composing Melodies, Thomas Brown Apr 2007

Mathematical Methods In Composing Melodies, Thomas Brown

Undergraduate Theses and Capstone Projects

This thesis, “Mathematical Methods in Composing Melodies,” explores the different ways in which mathematics can be used to create music. Some research has been done in this field already. Richard F. Voss and John Clarke used fractals and different frequencies of noise to create music. The Greek composer Iannis Xenakis used Markovian Stochastic trees to create some of his compositions. Explored in this thesis are seven different methods to compose melodies. After compiling the different melodies, they were categorized by different musical periods based on the musical characteristics found in the melody. This thesis differs from other research that deals …

Lies Breathed Through Silver: Mythological Constructs In Tolkien’S Works, Joshua Mccrowell Apr 2007

Lies Breathed Through Silver: Mythological Constructs In Tolkien’S Works, Joshua Mccrowell

Undergraduate Theses and Capstone Projects

It’s not hard to imagine the English air being warm the night John Ronald Reuel Tolkien brought Clive Staples Lewis hard won into Christianity. The image of their lengthy midnight talk has since become almost mythic to those who study those two authors because of the impact that Christianity (and the other) had on each other’s lives. Lewis’ most famous works - everything from Narnia to his Space Trilogy to his apologetics - all are based on and inspired by his faith. Similarly, Tolkien once said that “The Lord of the Rings is of course a fundamentally religious and Catholic …

Standing Before The Stranger, Jonathan G. Dillion Apr 2007

Standing Before The Stranger, Jonathan G. Dillion

English Theses & Dissertations

In Standing Before the Stranger I depict different levels of psychological dislocation, ranging from minor anxiety to insanity, initiated by estrangement from both the external world and the inner world of the self. The speakers and characters inhabiting these poems are either suffering or reacting, often violently, to their inner turmoil. Readers will find dark poems that combine the comedic and the tragic, mix surreal elements with the mundane, and often manage to be absurd and meaningful at the same time. Four music-based poems provide relief from the chaos, but transcendence, for both the speakers and the readers, is only …

Eve's Side, Rebecca Lauren Gidjunis Apr 2007

Eve's Side, Rebecca Lauren Gidjunis

English Theses & Dissertations

Imagine that Eve came to earth one day to tell her side of the creation story. Perhaps she'd say that she came first, not Adam, or tell us that God is actually a matronly woman, with round hips and sagging breasts. Maybe she'd sing of sensuality, body, and female wisdom.

Unfortunately, most of us in Judeo-Christian theology have been privy to only one side—Adam'. By allowing Eve and her daughters to speak, I claim women's stories as essential to our overall understanding of the divine. In Eve 's Side, I allow women to see themselves in God and God …

The Bachelor Primetime Construction Of Romance, Fairy Tales, And Melodrama, Susan E. Beck Apr 2007

The Bachelor Primetime Construction Of Romance, Fairy Tales, And Melodrama, Susan E. Beck

Institute for the Humanities Theses

This thesis is centered on the reality television program The Bachelor. Presenting itself as a modem day Cinderella story, The Bachelor speaks directly to women's fantasies and their familiarity with fairy tales. In the process, women are molded into convenient and stale stereotypes. Furthermore, the show uses melodrama to create suspense as well as sensational episodes and romantic sentiments to keep the viewer tuned in. Instead of "reality" the show highlights a series of marginalized, sexualized, commodified, and pacified women who place marriage at the epicenter of their selfworth. From Queen for a Day to The Phil Donahue Show …

The Time It Snowed In Puerto Rico, Sarah Marie Mccoy Apr 2007

The Time It Snowed In Puerto Rico, Sarah Marie Mccoy

English Theses & Dissertations

The Time It Snowed in Puerto Rico is a coming-of-age novel chronicling two years in the life of Verdita, an eleven-year-old girl living in the Puerto Rico. The book begins in 1961, a time rich in Puerto Rican history as American influences become more prevalent in the lives of islanders. Everything is changing for Verdita, her body, her life, her community, and country. She struggles with who she is as a woman, a daughter, a Puerto Rican, and an adult. Verdita's search for identity mirrors the country's efforts to determine what it represents as a conquered nation and blended culture.

Fin De Siecle 3.0: Cybernetic Anxieties In Posthuman Science Fiction, Jessica L. Dambruch Apr 2007

Fin De Siecle 3.0: Cybernetic Anxieties In Posthuman Science Fiction, Jessica L. Dambruch

English Theses & Dissertations

The examination of technological metaphors as pervasive descriptive structures sustained in the genre of science fiction is most apparent in an analysis of the dialogue between posthuman discourse and science fiction. The literary posthuman, jointly derived from a rich history of socio-cultural anxieties of embodiment and identity dating back to Victorian Gothic literatures, is most recently manifest within the sphere of cyberpunk and post-cyberpunk fiction of the late 20th century. A third wave feminist analysis of posthuman technological metaphors is valuable for its potential to apprehend essentialist ideological constructions of gendered identity within science fiction which N. Katherine Hayles and …

Art Therapy, Valli Jo Porter Apr 2007

Art Therapy, Valli Jo Porter

English Theses & Dissertations

The five stories in this thesis explore how people comprehend identity, especially in the context of geographical region, religion, relationships, and genetics. Each story's suburban setting plays largely into the characters' crises of identity, even though the protagonists range in age from teen to middle-aged father of four. Through the action of each story, the five protagonists awaken to new facets of their own characters.

In "Love Your Neighbor," college student Julianne debates whether she can take revenge after a neighbor invades her privacy. Jacob Ritter, in "1-90," contemplates whether he understands his children now that they are grown and …

Complexity, Fine-Tuning, And Multiple Universes: The Insufficiency Of Scientific Theories For Determining Metaphysical Views, Ashley Graham Kennedy Apr 2007

Complexity, Fine-Tuning, And Multiple Universes: The Insufficiency Of Scientific Theories For Determining Metaphysical Views, Ashley Graham Kennedy

Institute for the Humanities Theses

Many argue that science can provide empirical evidence for the existence of God or a designer. In this thesis I examine three such arguments: the irreducible complexity argument from biochemistry, the fine-tuning argument from physics and the rare earth/privileged planet hypothesis from astronomy. I conclude that all three of the arguments fail to show whether or not the universe was designed, because science is not prepared to answer this question. Further, I argue that scientific theories, in general, cannot be used as the sole basis for metaphysical propositions.

Peddling A Distinguishable Female Form: Late Nineteenth-Century Advertising Of Cosmetics Hair Products And Corsets In British Women's Magazines, Cathleen A. Rhodes Apr 2007

Peddling A Distinguishable Female Form: Late Nineteenth-Century Advertising Of Cosmetics Hair Products And Corsets In British Women's Magazines, Cathleen A. Rhodes

English Theses & Dissertations

This project examines advertisements for cosmetics, hair products, corsets, and various other mechanical and chemical body alteration devices to uncover an emphasis, manifested through the female body, on gendered differences. Beauty products accentuated feminine physical attributes in order to emphasize differences that were much subtler than the discourse on gender would suggest. In essence, to make the bodily difference closer to the differences the discourse on gender proclaimed.

Primary source material includes visual and textual advertisements from women's periodicals from 1870 — 1900. Periodicals have been chosen for popularity in their respective time periods as well as for their varied …

The People Who Live On Lambert Lane, Natalie G. Diaz

English Theses & Dissertations

This work exists as an exploration into the life of a small desert town and the souls that people this town, specifically, American Indians. It is my hope that my characters and my setting spark to life in these stories in a way that they have not been allowed to in mainstream fiction.

The Role Of Computer-Mediated Communication In Non-Native Speakers’ Acquisition Of Academic Literacy, Rui Cheng Apr 2007

The Role Of Computer-Mediated Communication In Non-Native Speakers’ Acquisition Of Academic Literacy, Rui Cheng

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Research shows that academic literacy is discipline specific. Students have to learning the ways of communication in order to gain access to the discourse community of the selected discipline through understanding and performing required genres and learning necessary disciplinary knowledge. Scaffolding is important in the process to help students internalize the disciplinary knowledge and improve students' performance on academic papers. Computer-mediated communication (CMC) provides good chances of scaffolding and mediation especially for non-native graduate students who may have lost many opportunities of class participation due to their limited language proficiency or other cultural issues.

In this dissertation, the researcher investigated …

Law's Religion: Rendering Culture, Benjamin L. Berger Apr 2007

Law's Religion: Rendering Culture, Benjamin L. Berger

Osgoode Hall Law Journal

This article argues that constitutional law's inability to deal with religion in a satisfying way flows, in part, from its failure to understand religion as, in a robust sense, culture. Once one begins to understand the Canadian constitutional rule of law itself as a cultural form, it becomes apparent that law renders religion in a very particular fashion, and that this rendering is a product of law's symbolic categories and interpretive horizons. This article draws out the elements of Canadian constitutionalism's unique rendering of religion and argues that, although Canadian constitutionalism claims to understand religion as a culture, this is …
