Structural Equation Model Of Exercise In Women Utilizing The Theory Of Unpleasant Symptoms And Social Cognitive Variables, Sarah Elizabeth Cobb Apr 2007

Structural Equation Model Of Exercise In Women Utilizing The Theory Of Unpleasant Symptoms And Social Cognitive Variables, Sarah Elizabeth Cobb

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

A dramatic decline in physical activity levels occurs from adolescence to young adulthood. Those who were sedentary as adolescents tend to maintain a sedentary lifestyle. Women are particularly vulnerable to the effects of a sedentary lifestyle because of the risk for cardiovascular disease. The purpose of this research was to test a theoretical model of exercise in adolescent and young adult women using the theory of unpleasant symptoms with social cognitive variables and then to test a revised model that was determined a priori. The central hypotheses were that the relationships as depicted in the proposed theoretical models would be …

Healing, Faith, And Liturgy: A Theological Reflection Upon The Church's Ministry Of Healing In The Context Of Worship, Christoffer H. Grundmann Apr 2007

Healing, Faith, And Liturgy: A Theological Reflection Upon The Church's Ministry Of Healing In The Context Of Worship, Christoffer H. Grundmann

Theology Faculty Presentations

(excerpt) "Healing has been present within the Christian assembly from its very beginnings. Jesus healed and ordered his disciples to do likewise (Mt. 10:1; Lk. 9:10; 10:9) explicitly charging them not to take money for it: 'Proclaim the good news, 'The kingdom of heaven has come near.' Cure the sick, raise the dead, cleanse the lepers, cast out demons. You received without payment: give without payment' (Mt. 10:7-8 NRSV). The Gospel according to Mark records that, when the disciples were sent to 'proclaim the good news to the whole creation,' they were also promised that their laying their 'hands on …

The Etiology Of Music: Frederic Chopin And The Consumptive Ideal, Shirali Patel Apr 2007

The Etiology Of Music: Frederic Chopin And The Consumptive Ideal, Shirali Patel

Music Honors Theses

Although disease, in many ways, helped shape the life of Polish pianist and composer Frédéric Chopin (1810-1849), its social implications have rarely been examined in biographical studies on the composer’s life. In this study, the medical literature on tuberculosis disease (formerly known as consumption) from the 19th century was examined for its significance in influencing public perceptions of the innovative musician during his lifetime. It was found that Chopin’s 19th-century profile as a effeminate pianist and composer may have been at least partially established through his embodiment of the 19th-century consumptive ideal.

Rituals Of Care: A Look At The Church's Ministry With The Sick, Lizette Larson-Miller Apr 2007

Rituals Of Care: A Look At The Church's Ministry With The Sick, Lizette Larson-Miller

Institute of Liturgical Studies Occasional Papers

(excerpt) "I had an interesting experience last month writing an article on Christian healing for a journal of medicine. The parameters of the requested article were a bit vague, and as I prodded the editor with questions I realized just how much I was in un-chartered territory. The familiar concepts (or, more to the point) the familiar assumptions that are part of an insider conversation theologically and ecclesiologically were missing, and I found myself having to carefully spell out the focus of what I thought might be helpful to discuss in a journal read solely by health professionals. The experience …

Digital Radio In Canada: From Dab To Multi-Platform Approaches., Brian O'Neill Apr 2007

Digital Radio In Canada: From Dab To Multi-Platform Approaches., Brian O'Neill

Conference Papers

This paper examines the position of digital radio in Canada. It examines the Canadian experience of digital radio development from its introduction in 1995 to the present and asks whether the approach adopted and the lessons learned provide useful models for application elsewhere. Three main strands form the background to digital radio’s current stage of development: firstly, the introduction and early support for Digital Audio Broadcasting or (DAB) in the mid 1990s; secondly, the response of the radio industry to the internet and new media as complementary to traditional radio broadcasting provision; and thirdly, the more recent experience of the …

La Presencia Del Dolor En La Obra Poética De Garcilaso De La Vega, Diego Hurtado De Mendoza, Gutierre De Cetina, Lope De Vega Y La Madre Josefa Del Castillo, Dilia Hernández Delgado

Department of Modern Languages and Literatures: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The present study explores works by Gracilaso de la Vega, Gutierre de Cetina, Diego Hurtado the Mendoza, Lope de Vega and Josefa del Castillo, a group of Spanish language writers whose lives span the sixteenth, seventeenth and eighteenth-centuries. The thematic focus is upon sorrow or pain, both as subjective experience in the respective biographies and as a force spurring these authors toward the production of their verse. To this end, several poetic compositions have been examined, applying methodological techniques derived from Dámaso Alonso, José María Díez Borque, Tomás Navarro and Elizabeth Wilhelmsen. The exploration has brought to light that it …

Latino Community Abused By Police Brutality, Immigration Raids, Economic Apartheid/La Comunidad Latina Sufre Constantes Abusos Por Parte De La Policia, La Migra, Y La Economia, Gil Villagran

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

It has become clear that  too many Latinos are increasingly at risk of their liberties, education and health care, their livelihoods, indeed—in some cases—their very lives. If these risks are due to violent behavior, laziness, poor choices, unhealthy lifestyles, and an unwillingness to work,  then it is understandable that people suffer the consequences of their actions.  But we know the prevailing truth of our Latino cultural values:  hard work, taking care of family, honesty, sharing with others.  And if we came to the U.S. as immigrants (with documents or without), we came out of desperation—eager to work hard at an honest …
