The article proves how the testimony narrative, in writing death and genocide-related atrocities, attempts to restore human dignity to the victims. The narrative space that becomes in that way a burial place and a funeral monument plays also the role of the ''redemption'' of history in order to secure the future. The narratives that the article analyzes constitute at the same time a hymn to life. By creating themselves other destinies, other reasons for life, the survivor and witness authors succeed in overcoming the world-weariness that threatens every survivor of the Itsembabwoko slaughter.

Gender, Citizenship, And Dress In Modernizing Japan, Barbara Molony Dec 2007

Gender, Citizenship, And Dress In Modernizing Japan, Barbara Molony

History

Between the 1870s and 1945, dress was one of the signifiers ofJapan's transition from being objectified as an "Oriental" country subordinate to the West to playing a dominant role as the bearer of "universal" (Western) modernity to East Asia. 1 In the late nineteenth century, Western dress indicated a yearning for international respect for Japan's modernity; by the early twentieth century, when Japan had largely achieved diplomatic equality with the West and colonial dominion over parts of Asia, Western dress had come to be taken for granted by "modern" Japanese men. In some cases, colonial subjects could be distinguished by …

34/2 | Excavations At Kadesh Barnea (Tell El-Qudeirat) 1976–1982, Part 2: Plates, Plans And Sections, Rudolph Cohen, Hannah Bernick-Greenberg

IAA Reports—Monograph Series of the Israel Antiquities Authority

This volume, comprised of two parts: text and plates, presents the results of the excavations at Tell el-Qudeirat, located in an oasis in the northern Sinai desert and identified as biblical Kadesh Barnea. The excavations, which took place over ten seasons (1976–1982), revealed a stratigraphic sequence of three superimposed Iron Age fortresses. The plans and architecture of the fortresses, as well as the pottery, including the family of ‘Negebite Ware’, are described.
