By the turn of the twentieth century, Negro troops began to resist Jim Crow laws in an organized way. While some historians have mentioned these racially motivated disturbances, many have failed to seriously analyze and assess these clashes, which has led to the neglect of an important source of African-American resistance to racial discrimination in the post Reconstruction era. The purpose of this thesis is to address that failure. By briefly examining the evolution of Jim Crow policies at the turn of the century, by demonstrating how blacks struggled to serve in the U. Utah is seeing a rapid increase in K-12 students whose native language is not English. With this increase, teachers face the challenge of finding new and effective teaching methods to reach their ESL (English as a Second Language) students. This research explores the study of poetry as an instrument to improve ESL students' pronunciation of English. When read out loud, poetry can be an exercise in pronouncing consonant sounds (from alliteration), decoding vowel sounds (from rhyme), and acquiring the natural speech rhythm of the English language (from meter). The goal of my project was to further enhance my abilities as a collaborative pianist and take an in-depth look at two composers (Prokofiev and Shostakovich) who are strong influences in my love of music. I found the challenge to be in balancing all of my individual practice time with all of the rehearsals between the three separate groups. Each group met at least once a week for a two-hour rehearsal in addition to having weekly coachings with members of the Fry Street Quartet. In the end, the recital was an immense success and the program notes turned out nice. …

This thesis examines two accepted styles of writing in the Middle Ages, the romance and religious genres, and what purpose they perform in the Gawain-poet’s religious poem, Patience, and his romance poem, Sir Gawain and the Green Knight (SGGK). One recently popular line of research among medieval scholars is examining the way medieval authors, such as the Gawain-poet, combine elements of romance and spiritual writings. This thesis is a documentation of my efforts to organize the Robert Kingsley Papers held in the Margaret M. Bridwell Art Library at the University of Louisville. Motivated by the desire to preserve a record of his life's work, Louisville architect Robert K. Kingsley donated the collection of personal papers in 1993, shortly before his death from brain cancer. The Kingsley papers remained in its original state of disorder from 1993 to 2007, when I took on the role of archivist with the intention of making the collection available to researchers and scholars. This critical inquiry into the social constructions of "black" and "white" identities analyzes the roles of the three "western" monotheisms (Judaism, Christianity and Islam) in the cognitive and sociohistorical developments of racial slavery and antiblack racism. Specifically, it investigates the sociohistorical consequences of the inherent dualisms of the "western" monotheisms and how those dualisms are expressed in the production of social theories and systems that rely on believer/non-believer oppositions and binaries defined by a Manichaean view of the universe and a teleological conception of history that fosters and sustains an eternal holy war against infidels. This study uses a transatlantic interpretive framework, addressing both Euro-American and Kiowa voices to understand Kiowa reactions to changes caused by ongoing transatlantic influences. From their Paleolithic days, the Kiowas faced the challenge of new ways. On the North American continent, they evolved into small hunter-gathering family units as vast grasslands arose from their fire-drives that increasingly reshaped their surroundings. The transatlantic Columbian Exchange, following Spanish discovery, provoked massive changes to Kiowa material culture as the horse produced a cultural revolution to their social and economic practices. Those changes required continued raiding for horses between 1830 and 1874 that exacerbated …

The Mexican American civil rights movement surfaced in the 1960s and 1970s as a direct response to blatant institutional discrimination and neglect. The participation of women within the movement, however, has been overwhelmingly marginalized in favor of a largely male-dominated interpretation. Indeed, Mexican American women in Texas displayed a variety of perspectives about religious and ethnic identity, feminism, and politics during this time. Drawing on their own rich heritage and mutual experiences with discrimination based on race, gender, and class, these women nevertheless developed conflicting ideas about the abovementioned topics. Can the persistence of a human being's soul at death and prior to the bodily resurrection be sufficient to guarantee that the resurrected human being is numerically identical to the human being who died? According to Thomas Aquinas, it can. Yet, given that Aquinas holds that the human being is identical to the composite of soul and body and ceases to exist at death, it's difficult to see how he can maintain this view. In this paper, I address Aquinas's response to this objection (Summa Contra Gentiles, IV.80-81). After making a crucial clarification concerning the nature of the non-repeatability principle …

The article proves how the testimony narrative, in writing death and genocide-related atrocities, attempts to restore human dignity to the victims. The narrative space that becomes in that way a burial place and a funeral monument plays also the role of the ''redemption'' of history in order to secure the future. The narratives that the article analyzes constitute at the same time a hymn to life. By creating themselves other destinies, other reasons for life, the survivor and witness authors succeed in overcoming the world-weariness that threatens every survivor of the Itsembabwoko slaughter.

History

Between the 1870s and 1945, dress was one of the signifiers ofJapan's transition from being objectified as an "Oriental" country subordinate to the West to playing a dominant role as the bearer of "universal" (Western) modernity to East Asia. 1 In the late nineteenth century, Western dress indicated a yearning for international respect for Japan's modernity; by the early twentieth century, when Japan had largely achieved diplomatic equality with the West and colonial dominion over parts of Asia, Western dress had come to be taken for granted by "modern" Japanese men. Human rights violations and abuses affect every region of the globe. The most recent Amnesty International Annual Report details violations in 149 countries. While there are no simple solutions to a problem of this magnitude and complexity, the support of powerful social groups can help in providing relief to the victims, pressure on abusive governments, legal consequences for abusers, and other resources in combating the violence that seems to chronically plague over our world. IAA Reports—Monograph Series of the Israel Antiquities Authority

This volume, comprised of two parts: text and plates, presents the results of the excavations at Tell el-Qudeirat, located in an oasis in the northern Sinai desert and identified as biblical Kadesh Barnea. The excavations, which took place over ten seasons (1976–1982), revealed a stratigraphic sequence of three superimposed Iron Age fortresses. The plans and architecture of the fortresses, as well as the pottery, including the family of ‘Negebite Ware’, are described.

This project is a curriculum for secondary guitar instruction. It consists of eight levels of study and is designed for the beginning to intermediate student. It has repertoire selections and explanations of the pedagogical validity of the works. These works were selected due to their cumulative and didactic nature and because of the specific technical issues they utilize. These technical issues are introduced gradually to ensure a student's steady and incremental progress in both technical and musical aspects.
