Faculty Works

Studying organizations as dynamic, open systems has captured the interest of organizational scholars for several decades. Along with other influences this has led to pr9gressively more sophisticated understanding of how leaders and followers interact and how their organizations interact with the external environment. In turn, as our understanding has improved, scholarly awareness of the complexity of leadership has increased. One might argue that this awareness correspondingly has produced a better understanding of the many tensions that derive from dilemmas and paradoxes that leaders face in their work.

'A Vile And Abject Woman': Noble Mistresses, Legal Power, And The Family In Early Modern Spain, Grace E. Coolidge

Mistresses of Spanish noblemen between 1360 and 1600 occupied a place within the Spanish patriarchy where concerns about gender and class intersected, revealing contradictions between the ideals of honor, the moral injunctions of Catholic doctrine, and the practical needs of noble families. Mistresses occupied a flexible space in the Spanish patriarchy where a woman’s social status, her ability to produce male heirs, and her ability to use the legal system to her advantage shaped her experience as a mistress and made her more likely to disrupt or change the inheritance processes of noble families. Bertha Rice Fitts was born in 1870, in Waterford, Maine. After graduating from Gorham Normal School in 1894, she became Master’s Assistant and eighth-grade teacher in Westbrook, Maine, before accepting a similar position at a grammar school in Quincy, MA. While in Quincy, she boarded with Mrs. Calvin Fitts, and in 1899 married her son, Arthur Fitts. She was involved in the Southern Branch of the Gorham Alumni Association for many years. The Passeggiata and Popular Culture in an Italian Town by Giovanna P. Del Negro examines the relationship between the practices of everyday life and the negotiation of modernity in a town (to which Del Negro assigns the pseudonym "Sasso") in the Abruzzo province of central Italy. In her study, Del Negro examines a range of expressive culture from face-to-face events like the evening passeggiata (or promenade) and festive games to mass-mediated forms such as a popular soap opera, televised court proceedings, postcards, and reactions to local and national news stories. Hayden L. Anderson was a prominent Maine educator and Maine historian. He graduated from Gorham Normal School in 1925, and subsequently earned degrees from Boston University and Bates College, as well as doing graduate work at Harvard University. He served as principal and superintendent in schools in central and northern Maine, and as Dean of Instruction at Farmington State College. He also worked in the State Department of Education and served on the Board of Trustees of the University of Maine.
