Iowa Physicians: Legitimacy, Institutions, And The Practice Of Medicine, Part Three: Dealing With Poverty And Defending Autonomy, 1929-1950, Susan C. Lawrence
Department of History: Faculty Publications
This article, the last of this three-part series, briefly lays out some of the major changes in medical organization and institutions in Iowa between 1929 and 1950. The bulk of the essay then focuses on the effects that the rising costs of medical care had on ordinary Iowa physicians. Anxiety about the expense of medical services for the respectable working and middle classes joined worries about paying for the basic health needs of the indigent and marginally poor. In the 1910s and 1920s, more physicians and more patients expected hospital stays for surgery and childbirth, looked to laboratory-based tests for …

Warts And All: Using Student Portfolio Outcomes To Facilitate A Faculty Development Workshop, Glenna M. Andrade
Warts And All: Using Student Portfolio Outcomes To Facilitate A Faculty Development Workshop, Glenna M. Andrade
Arts & Sciences Faculty Publications
In 2004, the Department of Writing Studies at Roger Williams University in Bristol, Rhode Island, the U.S., began an assessment of student outcomes for two first-year writing courses (Fall 04 to Fall 05) to evaluate performance on previously established criteria. A study of the students’ Portfolio Assessment Sheets concluded that one pervasive problem was “Development” as determined partly by low A grades in the two courses. To engage the faculty (full-time and adjunct), the grades from Fall 04, Spring 05, and Fall 05 were presented during a SummerWorkshop in June 2006. After analyzing a sample student essay, the 28 faculty …

Freeway Exit Ramp Traffic Flow Research Based On Computer Simulation, Xu Wang
Freeway Exit Ramp Traffic Flow Research Based On Computer Simulation, Xu Wang
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Interstate highways are one of the most important components of the transportation infrastructure in America. Freeway ramps play an important role in the whole interstate transportation system.
This paper researches the traffic flow characteristics of four typical exit ramps in USA, which are tapered one-lane exit, tapered two-lane exit, parallel one-lane exit and parallel two-lane exit. Computer simulation software, such as CORSIM and HCS are applied as the main tools in this research. ANOVA and Tukey are used for statistical purpose.
It compares the maximum capacity, average running speed and the total lane change number of those four exit ramps. …
A Novel Biostable 3d Porous Collagen Scaffold For Implantable Biosensor, Young Min Ju
A Novel Biostable 3d Porous Collagen Scaffold For Implantable Biosensor, Young Min Ju
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Diabetes is a chronic metabolic disorder whereby the body loses its ability to maintain normal glucose levels. Despite of development of implantable glucose sensors in long periods, none of the biosensors are capable of continuously monitoring glucose levels during long-term implantation reliably. Progressive loss of sensor function occurs due in part to biofouling and to the consequences of a foreign body response such as inflammation, fibrosis, and loss of vasculature.
In order to improve the function and lifetime of implantable glucose sensors, a new 3D porous and bio-stable collagen scaffold has been developed to improve the biocompatibility of implantable glucose …
The Tryphê Of The Sybarites: A Historiographical Problem In Athenaeus, Robert J. Gorman, Vanessa Gorman
The Tryphê Of The Sybarites: A Historiographical Problem In Athenaeus, Robert J. Gorman, Vanessa Gorman
Department of History: Faculty Publications
A large number of the most informative fragments of the Hellenistic Greek historians are transmitted by Athenaeus. Unlike the frequently jejune evidence provided by scholiasts, lexicographers, and the like, these texts allow us to draw historiographical conclusions about lost writers: on this basis, scholars have posited, for example, the place of a given author in the Hellenistic “schools” of history. The importance of Athenaeus as a source for history-writing between Xenophon and Diodorus calls for detailed study of the Deipnosophist’s method of citing these lost authors. The present article focuses on Athenaeus’ testimony concerning the downfall of Archaic Sybaris through …

A Process-Based Call Assessment: A Comparison Of Input Processing And Program Use Behavior By Activity Type, Kathryn Rimmasch
Theses and Dissertations
In an effort to better understand the mental processing connected to different kinds of CALL activities, this study collected data on time subjects spent, as well as buttons subjects clicked while doing 10 different CALL activities accompanying a beginning French text book. In addition, a group of subjects thought out loud as they completed the same activities. These subjects were recorded on video, their thinking out loud was transcribed and the transcriptions were coded according to how they indicated they were dealing with the language input. The frequencies of coded categories were compared to see if there were connections between …

The Home Tie, Christina Davenport
The Home Tie, Christina Davenport
All Theses
The Home Tie is a collection of short fiction that utilizes place as a vital literary element by exploring the southern landscape and giving a candid rendering of the people who live in the region. Outsiders' conceptions of the South are varied, from the genteel southern belle strolling beneath the Spanish moss of her Savannah plantation to the unrefined redneck blaring country-western music from his oversized pick-up truck; from the clergyman greeting his long procession of faithful church-goers to the Klansman still calling his secret meetings somewhere in the backwoods of Appalachia. There is a feeling, both within and without, …
