In Zarathustra's "On the Vision and the Riddle," three animals-a spider, a snake, and a dog-make significant appearances, as do three human or quasihuman figures-Zarathustra himself, the dwarf known as the Spirit of Gravity, and the shepherd who must bite off the head of the snake. Of these animals, it is the dog who receives the most extended attention. Here, in the passage that along with "The Convalescent" (with its eagle and serpent) is usually and rightly taken to be Nietzsche's most articulate and yet highly veiled approach to explaining the teaching of eternal recurrence, the riddling vision involves animals. …

The Confucian tradition has often been credited with a strong allegiance to the value of community. It recognizes that certain goods might be attained through special forms of human association, but not by any solitary individual. Are such community goods attained at the expense of the liberty of individual members? Philosophers have struggled with the tension between liberty and community since the dawn of Western philosophy. A fire burned at the center of the kiva’s dirt floor, around which the twelve elders gathered. A traditional reflection stone sat on the open side of the fire, opposite the sipapu, which signified the opening in the earth through which the first people arrived from the unseen worlds. I believe that prejudice underlies the development of hatred toward various outgroups. Hence, in order to understand the origins of hatred, it is essential to understand the origins of prejudice. Our genetic/evolutionary heritage provides the initial push toward prejudice. My essential argument is that three sets of genetic/evolutionary processes that lead to prejudice and discrimination evolved in hunter-gatherer tribes. They were appropriate and necessary for that subsistence mode, which characterizes 99% of human existence. These three sets of processes—inclusive fitness, authority-bearing systems, intergroup hostility— are put into motion in nonhunter-gatherer contexts because they have been incorporated into our epigenetic systems. …

An evolutionary theory known as balanced polymorphism (Hutchinson, 1959), which accounts for the prevalence of the deadly hereditary disease called sickle cell anemia, may prove to be a possible solution to the evolutionary paradox of homosexuality. The evolutionary advantage supported by the theory may account for the current and future prevalence of homosexuality. The theory works on the basis of a heterozygotic advantage, which is simply the advantage gained by a combination of two extreme genotypes. In this case, the heterozygotic advantage is the personality of a homosexual and the sexual orientation of a heterosexual. To test this theory, forty-eight …

This thesis focuses on the use of subversion to create multiple meanings in rhetorical texts. Subversion, an element focused on by Fiske (1986, 1987) and McKerrow (1988) in their early contributions to the rhetorical study of multiple meaning texts, has been an ongoing lacunae in the study of polysemic texts. I wish to provide a correction to this problem by offering the concept of subsemy. By examining the role of strategic ambiguity and irony in the functioning of subversion, the concept of subsemy provides a missing picture of how popular cultural texts, film in particular, can function subversively.

“京味小說”是中國現當代文壇一個令人矚目的文學流派﹐從創始人老舍到“新京味”王朔﹐五、六十年間呈現出鮮明的嬗變軌跡。但無論該流派怎樣變化﹐京味小說中的北京都有三層象徵意義﹐即“北京象徵中國”﹐“北京象 徵鄉土”﹐以及“北京的變化顯示中國社會變動的必然性與特殊性”。讓論者尤感興趣的是“北京象徵鄉土”的這一層象徵意義﹐在本人看來這裡的“鄉 土”有兩層含意﹐其一﹐中國知識分子的精神家園﹐建基於城與人的文化同構性﹔其二﹐代表該古老都市的民間。這兩層含義使得“京味小說”中的“知識 分子話語”和“民間話語”顯示出某種內在張力﹐豐富及擴大了它的精神內涵﹐ 在不同時期的“京味小說”裡展現了不同的角力關係﹐並以越來越大的幅度向民間傾斜。

本文主要通過解讀四篇不同時期京味小說的代表作﹐理出該流派的嬗變軌跡﹐採用的是文本細讀的方法。具體地說﹐首先根據“京味小說”定義的重點﹐ 從三大方面著手分析該流派的變化﹕北京人和北京事﹐北京話﹐以及北京的風土習俗。在分析“北京人和北京事”時﹐本文追蹤分析了四篇“京味小說”中 重複出現的道具﹐同時並置考察了文本中的寓意系統、人物的命運、主題、情節結構以及其他人物的部分功能﹐希望通過這種綜合分析﹐對該流派的變化闡述深入到上述“北京象徵鄉土”的兩層含義的張力關係方面。

Gravity Fails is a collection of four short stories and two memoirs that explore the ways in which characters adjust and fit into to a world that is destructive, fragmented and sometimes alien. Many of these pieces deal not with the moment of crisis, but with the aftermath. In "Gravity Fails," the young Danielle struggles to feel safe after the violent murder of her mother. Eliza Morrison negotiates the disappearance of her husband in "More Colors." "Following Rebecca" chronicles a woman's return to normalcy after her alcoholic husband divorces her.
