Masters Theses

The Drawing of the Three is a work in seven movements scored for full orchestra. The title, along with the movement names, are derived from the novel The Dark Tower II: The Drawing of the Three by Stephen King. This composition can be viewed as a "sequel" to my earlier piece The Gunslinger, inspired by the first book in King's "Dark Tower" series. Unlike the previous work, the music is not intended to be a literal programmatic representation of the book's plot. Rather, its purpose is to musically depict the personalities and inner conflicts of the characters in the …

Contrā Dale Jamieson, the study of the metaethical foundations of environmental ethics may well lead students to a more environmentally responsible way of life. For although metaethics is rarely decisive in decision making and action, there are two kinds of circumstances in which it can play a crucial role in our practical decisions. First, decisions that have unusual features do not summon habitual ethical reactions, and hence invite the application of ethical precepts that the study of metaethics and ethical theory isolate and clarify. El problema de la crisis del teatro resultó complejo y de larga dilucidación en unos años de desorientación donde el pensamiento teórico teatral, manifestado mayormente en la prensa especializada, no llegó a encontrar respuesta adecuada en la práctica escénica. En este articulo se apuntan las causas de esta decadencia así como las soluciones que se propusieron en aquel momento para el resurgimiento escénico. Las publicaciones del periodo que debatieron el tema en sus páginas han servido como documentación prioritaria en este análisis.

This article studies the morphology of the mametian comedy and one of his best homages to theatre: A Life in the Theatre Here the baroque image of life as a theatre and its opposite are explored. Theatre is also a very closed world where we find the same problems as in outside world. Through parody and intertextuality Mamet finds his way in a play structured as a series of sketches.

This thesis is a study of an unpublished Indian Album from the Dar al-Kutub al-Masriyya (Egyptian National Library) collection, tarikh farisi, no. 66. The album consists of 70 pages, all with paintings; 36 of them are flower and plant depictions painted especially for the muraqqa(album) and 34 are pasted-in paintings from different origins. It is undated and has no signatures or attributions presented on the pages.

We'll explore how questioning our lives and actions helps us grasp environmental justice. In his paper, "Benjamin, Agamben, and the Paradox of Translation," Paolo Bartoloni offers a theoretical discourse on translation that goes beyond the traditional precincts of linguistics and literary theory as well as the disciplines of cultural studies and postcolonial theory. Bartoloni argues that more recently, the discourse on translation has begun to incorporate epistemological concerns, dealing not only with language but also with subjectivity and ethics. In his paper, "Haruki Murakami and the Ethics of Translation," Will Slocombe argues that despite the fact that Murakami has gained world-wide popularity recently, there has been little critical attention to his works outside of the comparatively narrow area of Japanese studies. Slocombe proposes that Murakami is too important an author to be limited in this way because of his definition of "translation." For Murakami, translation delineates an operative ethics between Self and Other, a dialogue that is not only between different languages and cultures, but also between the private and political spheres, and between different individuals. In her paper, "Medieval Cosmopolitanism and the Saracen-Christian Ethos," Marla Segol argues that in Floire et Blancheflor and Aucassin et Nicolette, two medieval Occitanian romances, the writers work actively to incorporate Islamic culture and its accomplishments into a hybrid communal identity. The hybrid elements of this identity are demonstrated in two ways: first, through the portrayal of mixed couples and second, through depiction of a biculturally constituted landscape and culture. Intercultural relations between the characters are dramatized through the structures of religious conversion. Each romance features a mixed couple, with one member Christian and the other, formerly Muslim but converted …

The idea of physical solitude often implies metaphysical solitude, and it is this spiritual state of detachment or self-enclosure that usually arouses the widest range of moral responses. Physical solitude is a metaphorical focus for an attitude that relates to self and society. In my thesis, however, I am primarily interested in the concept of solitude as a vehicle facilitating a journey of inward exploration into the mystifying labyrinth of the self in search of truth. In this sense, solitude becomes a condition enabling consciousness to achieve spiritual insight and truth with respect to the nature of self and world.
