Two Chinese Festivals, Peng (Pamela) Chen

Masters Theses

Two Chinese Festivals is a music piece written for a chamber-sized orchestra. The first movement Kite Festival is a traditional Chinese celebration in which people give thanks that the spring is coming. The second movement Lantern Festival is an event run on the fifteenth day of Chinese New Year. People make many varieties of Lanterns that represent different ancient Chinese tales. Then the lanterns are displayed on all the city streets.

The ongoing problem of providing undergraduate students the real experience of research to prepare them for graduate school and careers has found a possible solution in mentored research. Additionally, online dissemination of research provides opportunities for mentored research to reach a wide audience without the barriers of traditional publishing. Important in this process is assuring the relevance of student research which requires a topic the student both enjoys and excels at. One of the ways that linguists think about language is through geographical distribution, commonly known as dialects. It's very easy to think about geography because of the wide range of locales in which English is spoken. Due to conquest and colonization, English is now a world language. There's British English, Australian English, and Nigerian English, among many others. In the continental U.S., most people readily identify a number of regional dialects: “Midwestern," "New England," "Southern." Fisheries Development In Kiribati: Sustainability Issues In A "Mirab" Economy, Frank R. Thomas

Pacific Studies

Fisheries development has long been recognized as a means of achieving greater economic independence for Pacific "microstates." The Republic of Kiribati is particularly well endowed in marine resources, largely due to its extensive Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). However, the extraction of those resources rests mainly with distant-water fishing nations (DWFNs) who pay a license fee. This feature of a "MIRAB" economy, which encompasses elements of migration, remittances, aid, and bureaucracy, only marginally benefits Kiribati. Government has therefore looked to develop its own fishery' industry and begun to focus on inshore fisheries and aquaculture projects to diversify Kiribati's meager exports. In …

In traditional Chinese society, the family (Chia) and the clan (tsu) play an indispensable role in establishing and sustaining the prevailing value system, in molding the life of individuals and in shaping a community's social relations into an orderly and stable pattern. This article includes the study of several important topics about the Chinese names. It details the significance of Chinese names and introduces the types of Chinese names and their meanings, followed by the historical development of surnames, clan names, and generation names.
