Willa Cather As Equivocal Icon, Guy J. Reynolds

All icons are ultimately equivocal: you can’t think of an icon without thinking about iconoclasm. Iconicity is a function of place. Cather turned the creation of icons, and the sceptical deconstruction of icons, into a form of narrative quest that could animate a whole fiction. After Cather’s death, her coterie, Midwesterners who had come East, were faced with what to make of an iconic heartlands figure who had moved to this re¬gion. The city of Mocha in Yemen was one of the most important Red Sea ports of the early modern Arab world, handling the trade of spices, textiles, metals, local aromatics and coffee beans. This essay examines the urban structures that governed the needs and practices of merchants in the city during the first half of the eighteenth century. Drawing on contemporary Arabic chronicles, archival European trade documents, historical photographs, and field work in the city, it documents the conspicuous absence of a network of public trade structures, like the urban khan, the expected locus for trade in an Arab city …

It is useful to work with a model of the practices of scientific research that proposes that there are three key moments at which choices must be made: the moments of (i) adopting a strategy (or methodological rules), (ii) accepting theories, and (iii) applying scientific knowledge. Social values may have legitimate and important roles at the first and third moments, but not the second, where only cognitive values and available empirical data have essential roles. The distinction between cognitive and social values is needed to maintain this model, and thus to sustain the view that impartial scientific knowledge can be …

In Greek antiquity, gravity, actuated by archers on city walls, turned many a tide, as victorious besiegers routed a city's land forces, but in the excitement of pursuit, got too close to the city walls! Xenophon presents one such instance as but the most recent of many cases, in relating the death of Teleutias.

The bow, among the Greeks, was the principal weapon for the city besieged. The bow being so effective in this situation explains why the an early advance in ancient siege machinery was the movable tower. It is an anti-gravity machine! Its purpose was to zero out …

Accounts Of Fighting And Cannibalism In Eastern New Guinea During The Missionary Contact Period, 1877-1888, As Told To Charles Abel, David Wetherell

Pacific Studies

Field notes by missionary Charles W. Abel of the London Missionary Society, contained in two little-known handwritten documents, describe traditional warfare customs, including treatment of captives and cannibalism among the peoples of the Milne Bay/China Strait region of southeastern New Guinea, as told to him by Paulo Dilomi and other informants. The editor transcribes these notes here and theorizes that Abel's knowledge of these activities provides context for the missionary's derogatory attitude toward the "savage" Papuan, in contrast to the perspectives of later observers including other missionaries and anthropologist Bronislaw Malinowski.

Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature

If francophone literatures were introduced as early as the 1970s principally at the Universities of Laval and Sherbrooke in Québec and at the Universities of Toronto, York and British Columbia in anglophone Canada, today, they enjoy a significant presence in all the large universities of the country. Paradoxically, in the Canadian university system as a whole, francophone literatures are taught more in anglophone Canada than in the francophone province of Québec. Two unrelated factors help to explain this situation. Early in the 1990s, under the influence of American universities, Canadian anglophone universities experienced an exponential growth of francophone literature, while …

In the following study I have endeavored to identify and document the lives and descendants of all 752 Swiss and Germans who came from Bern, Switzerland and London, England in 1710 to found New Bern , North Carolina. There were approximately 177 families in the migration traveling on three ships, of whom 51 families were Swiss, 106 were German, and approximately 20 families died out entirely on the voyage so that we do not know their names or nationality . The much better known 1710 New York settlement involved 10 ships and 847 families, but although the New Bern settlement …
