Readers who encounter the Aeneid today often face an abridgement meant to fit the demands of a college literature survey: Troy, anderings, Dido, the Underworld-the exotic Odyssean Aeneid of the first six books. The poem's second half, if read at all, might offer only scenes from book 8 (etiology and shield), Nisus and Euryalus from book 9, sometimes Camilla in book 11, Turnus's death at the end of the poem. But since the first cut in such selections usually includes most of the warfare, Vergil's subtlety (and difficulty) can be misunderstood, especially if the poem's close is to be considered. …

On March 25, 1774, the British Parliament passed the Boston Port Act, closing Boston Harbor to commerce. The act was meant to force Boston into paying for tea dumped into the harbor four months earlier during the Boston Tea Party. Parliament believed that the colonies would not support Boston and it would be only a short time before Boston acquiesced and paid for the tea, reestablishing British authority in the colonies.1 They could not have been more wrong. The thirteen colonies were deeply disturbed by the Boston Port Act, and came together in a way that shocked Parliament. Rather than …

This study of public reaction to the Battle of Gettysburg in the context of the wider experience of the American Civil War focuses on the view of Providence in history and war. To that end, this study primarily utilizes documents which were part of the public discourse during the war. This includes two major groups of writings: newspaper editorials and articles and published sermons. This allows a view of the intersecting of religion with the secular world as well as patriotism within in the religious community. Але мало що вислизає від неї, і її розум ламає голову над усім, що відбувається в класі та вдома. Коли директор пропонує конкурс, спрямований на вдосконалення міркувань, увесь її клас займається з’ясуванням того, як працюють речення та як створюються відмінності та зв’язки. У той же час Елфі та її однокласники виявляють багато відмінностей, фундаментальних для дослідження: видимість і реальність, одне і багато, частини і ціле, подібність і відмінність, постійність і зміна.

Founded by A.S. Varn Sr., the A.S. Varn & Son Crab Factory was the primary source of income and employment in the Pinpoint community. Crabs and oysters were harvested and shipped to local markets by boat or street car. The factory also provided a sense economic independence for individuals in the community. Men were tasked with catching the crabs or oysters during the season and transporting the catch to the factory. Children and women also played a role in the crabbing process. It was the children’s task to pick the back of the crabs while the women canned and deliver …

The bead research community lost a principal member when Peter Francis, Jr., director of the Center for Bead Research in Lake Placid, New York, died December 8, 2002, while on a research trip to Ghana, West Africa. Pete was widely known and respected, and was responsible for significantly increasing people's awareness—on a worldwide scale—of beads and their place in human culture through his many publications, lectures, workshops, symposia, and internet website. He leaves a void that will be very hard, if not impossible, to fill.
