A nine-year-old speaks with apparent callousness as he walks by the body of the girl he has killed. A fourteen-year-old jokes about "body parts in her pocket" after bashing in her mother's head with a candlestick holder. And a fifteen-year-old laughingly names his accomplice ''Homicide" after participating in a robbery that culminated in the victim's death. Seemingly remorseless acts such as these can have a crucial impact on the way a child or adolescent fares in the juvenile justice or criminal system. Progression Markers In Vietnamese Narrative, Somsonge Burusphat

This article aims to study the progression markers in six Vietnamese folktales. Progression markers refer to the grammatical devices that characterize any happenings that push the story forward. These markers highlight the temporal sequence of succeeding events, which form the backbone, or storyline of the Vietnamese folktales. They are rôi 'already', xoan ' finish', đoąn 'end, terminate'. thì 'then', bèn 'then, consequence', and đã. 'have experienced'. The paper begins with the structural description of these progression markers and proceeds to their discourse functions both on the narrative timeline and out of the line. In northeastern Thailand or "Isan", Lao, otherwise known as the northeastern Thai dialect, is used as a lingua franca by people living in the area, in which minority ethic groups speak Tai dialects/languages, such as the Nyo, Phuthai, saek, Kaloeng, Yoi as well as others. Participant Continuity In Thai Fictional Narrative, Suda Rangupan

This paper examines participant continuity in Thai fictional narratives using the quantitative method of referential distance (RD) proposed by Givon (1983, 1995). According to Givon, referential expressions are different in terms of their RD value: average RD of full noun phrases is that of zero anaphors the lowest. However, the result from this study shows that pronouns and zero pronouns in Thai have equal average RD value while full noun phrases have much higher average RD. This paper describes the identifying role ritual architecture plays in the construction of settlement landscapes in northern mainland Southeast Asia. Integrating ethnographic and art historical data, it develops a framework for understanding lak ban and lak muang in terms of their socio-historical development, spatical organization, ritual observances, designs, and meaning. The essay explores the essential experiential characteristics of the traditional house, particularly those which may be appropriately interwoven into the fabric of Thai urban dwellings today. With hermeneutic phenomenology as its philosophical framework, the in-depth exploration takes the form of four comparative case studies, each representing a point in the line of tradition. Through a layering descriptive and interpretive process, five essential patterns emerge, each of which finds its meanings richly traceable to the various facets of the Thai culture. For some time now I have been interested in autobiographical performance -- some form of the theatrical, in which performers explicitly use personal material in their work. Within this general field of autobiography and performance, one area of research concerns performances that are dependent on being located in personalised space -- what could be called, then, site-specific autobiographical performance. Few figures in the history of the Americas are surrounded with more colorful lore and acclamation than the Cuban politician, teacher, patriot, and poet Jose Marti. Among Marti's literary contributions, his Ismaelillo, a collection of fifteen poems published in 1882, claims prominence as both Marti's first book of poems and as a seminal Latin American text. Celebrated for its sincere communication of paternal love and lauded as the genesis of Hispanic literary modernism, Ismaelillo captures the longing of an exiled father separated from his son and homeland. The Relationship Between The "Lies" Christians Believe And Emotional Symptoms Of Anxiety, Anger/Hostility, And Depression, Terry Lee Swan

This correlational study examined the relationship between Christian's irrational beliefs (lies believed) and the number of symptoms of the emotional disturbances: anger/hostility, anxiety, and depression. Previous studies have shown that a relationship between these variables exists. A total of 55 subjects, 24 male and 31 female, from 3 randomly selected churches volunteered to participate in the study. The subjects completed two questionnaires: The Lies We Believe Questionnaire, developed by Chris Thurman, Ph.D. and A Symptom Questionnaire, developed by Robert Kellner, M.D. The former identifies irrational beliefs ("lies), and the latter identifies the number of symptoms of anger/hostility, anxiety, and depression. …
