Those who think of themselves as republican or civic liberals, as I do, will surely be of two minds about Seyla Benhabib's "Dismantling the Leviathan: Citizen and State in a Global World" [Spring 2001 ]. In some respects, Professor Benhabib' s thoughtful essay is quite congenial to republican liberalism. She insists on the importance of human rights, for instance, and she looks for ways to expand political participation. Her indictment of "civic republicanism," however, requires a republican-liberal response.

Famine in early modern Europe was a reoccurring phenomenon that caused stress on individuals and their societies. In most historical accounts of famine, authors have placed emphasis on either the physical aspects of starvation, including studies of famine victims, both live and post mortem, or the disastrous effects of such crises on demographics. On occasion, a researcher has instead probed the accounts of famine left behind by its victims. This essay is an attempt to correlate famine narratives with the biological aspects of starvation.

The evacuation of Latter-day Saint missionaries from Europe at the outbreak of World War II was truly a unique event in Church history. At the beginning of World War I, a few American missionaries serving in Europe were moved to areas of safety, but until 1939 there had never been a large-scale evacuation of missionaries as a result of their being endangered by impending war (fig. 1). As the threat of war gathered over Europe in the late 1930s, Latter-day Saint Church leaders in Salt Lake City watched anxiously. Tools Leave Marks: Material Analysis Of The Scotford-Soper-Savage Michigan Relics, Richard B. Stamps

Extensive collections of supposedly prehistoric artifacts known as the Michigan Relics or the Scotford-Soper-Savage collection—possibly as many as 3,000 pieces—exist across the country. I have personally examined more than 1,000 from four different collections. What is so special about this collection of artifacts? Why does it merit further study? Although numerous previous studies have suggested that the materials were not made by ancient people but are of modern origin, there is ongoing interest in the collections. Dr. John Halsey, the state archaeologist of Michigan, says that his office gets more requests to see these materials than any other single collection. …

The written portion of the thesis will explain the process of the production. The first chapter will follow the show from conception to realization. It will include how and why the particular shows, scenes, songs, and actors were chosen. Chapter Two will illustrate the research done for the production. Chapter Three will be my personal rehearsal journal. Script analysis and script notes will comprise Chapter Four. This will include side notes that were written during the rehearsal process. Chapter Five will be a brief self-evaluation.

The history of the AIDS Memorial Quilt, over forty thousand quilt panels to memorialize those who have died of AIDS, is examined. Topics include the conception of the memorial idea in San Francisco, CA, in 1985, a display of the quilt at the National Mall in Washington D.C., the continual growth in the size of the quilt, and efforts at conserving the quilt panels.

Interlanguage Analysis As An Input To Grammar-Teaching, Tony T.N. Hung

The last decade has seen a revival of interest in the teaching of grammar, though in a different form from 50 years ago. Regardless of the approach one adopts, it is important for teachers to try to gain a deeper insight into the 'interlanguage' grammars of their learners - i.e., the internalized linguistic systems, approximating the target language system but differing from it in various ways, which enable learners to generate the same kinds of sentences repeatedly, and which can account for the persistent errors that they make. Peer Assessment Of Oral Presentations: What These Two Cases Tell Us, Anil Pathak, Chan Soon Keng

This paper explores the use of peer assessments of oral presentations in teaching and evaluation. The experiment was conducted on undergraduate and graduate university students of communication courses. While the undergraduates were asked to evaluate their peers' oral presentations using a rather structured assessment sheet, the graduate students used a relatively open feedback sheet. A comparison was made between the peer ratings and teacher ratings. It was found that the graduate students differed significantly from the teachers' ratings and other peer ratings. The undergraduates, however, displayed a tendency towards uniformity and towards a broad agreement with the teacher ratings. The …

The rise and spread of information technology (IT) is widely recognized. However, whether ELT faculty members at leading state universities in Bangkok and their campuses in the vicinity of Bangkok have adopted IT in their teaching has never been addressed. The purposes of this study were to investigate these ELT lecturers' use of IT and to explore their opinions on the role of IT and the computer-related tasks they considered necessary in the new millennium. Out of the four skills of English, it would seem rather convincing to state that listening is the one that foreign students practise least. The why and wherefore is that most EFL instructors tend to pay more attention to linguistic competence, an approach which is reflected in the use of grammar-based materials. In addition, being trapped in the traditional approach of teaching English, instructors are more likely to concentrate on reading and writing rather than speaking and listening. In Search Of An Optimal Writing Feedback Strategy, Supanee Chinnawongs

Writing is a language skill most EFL students have problems with. This is due to several factors such as the inherent complexity of the skill itself, a lack of constant practice and inadequate or inappropriate corrective feedback. This paper reports on an exploratory study on writing feedback strategies in which a three-step procedure, that is peer comment, self-evaluation and teacher reformulation, is proposed. Results revealed a positive attitude in the students towards this collaborative feedback strategy. Students demonstrated their skills as critical readers and evaluators. Suggestions and implications are also discussed.

Feedback On L2 Adult Learners' Writing, Watana Padgate

This study examined the use of peer feedback and teacher-student conferencing activities in an English writing class with adult learners. It surveyed the learners' attitudes toward and their expectations from these feedback types and documented potential problems of applying these feedback activities in an adult learning situation. The participants were 108 graduate students. A questionnaire was used to collect the data. The results revealed the following: 1) the conferencing and peer feedback activities were highly valued by the majority of the learners, 2) the learners had the same expectations from both feedback activities, and 3) some problems occurring from the …
