Book Review: The Rise And Fall Of The American Whig Party: Jacksonian Politics And The Onset Of The Civil War By Michael Holt, Allen C. Guelzo Jul 2001

Book Review: The Rise And Fall Of The American Whig Party: Jacksonian Politics And The Onset Of The Civil War By Michael Holt, Allen C. Guelzo

Civil War Era Studies Faculty Publications

"An impartial history of American statesmanship will give some of its most brilliant chapters to the Whig party from 1830 to 1850," wrote James G. Blaine in his memoirs. This was not, unhappily, because of a great heritage of political achievement in American public life. The work of the Whigs was, as Blaine admitted, negative and restraining rather than constructive. Still, "if their work cannot be traced in the National statute books as prominently as that of their opponents, they will be credited by the discriminating reader of our political annals as the English of to-day credit Charles James Fox …

Technology & Identityis Rapidly Accelerating Technologyeroding Our Sense Of Who We Are?, Barbara Molony

History

Silicon Valley is a unique place in a unique moment of time. To say that it exists within history seems obvious; what might be less apparent is that Silicon Valley also has come to define both the practice and the subject of history. History and the exciting technologies born and bred in Silicon Valley are intimately linked. These ties were highlighted in a remarkable series of events and presentations sponsored by the Center for Science, Technology, and Society (CSTS) in October 2001. This issue of STS NEXUS captures the insights of those presentations.

Young Geniuses And Old Masters: The Life Cycles Of Great Artists From Masaccio To Jasper Johns, David W. Galenson, Robert Jensen Jul 2001

Young Geniuses And Old Masters: The Life Cycles Of Great Artists From Masaccio To Jasper Johns, David W. Galenson, Robert Jensen

Art and Visual Studies Faculty Working Papers

There have been two very different life cycles for great artists: some have made their greatest contributions very early in their careers, whereas others have produced their best work late in their lives. These two patterns have been associated with different working methods, as art's young geniuses have worked deductively to make conceptual innovations, while its old masters have worked inductively, to innovate experimentally. We demonstrate the value of this typology by considering the careers of four great conceptual innovators - Masaccio, Raphael, Picasso, and Johns - and five great experimental innovators - Michelangelo, Titian, Rembrandt, Cézanne, and Pollock. Recognition …

Mormonism's Encounter With The Michigan Relics, Mark Ashurst-Mcgee Jul 2001

Mormonism's Encounter With The Michigan Relics, Mark Ashurst-Mcgee

BYU Studies

One of the strangest and most extensive archaeological hoaxes in American history was perpetrated around the turn of the twentieth century in Michigan. Hundreds of objects known as the Michigan Relics were made to appear as the remains of a lost civilization. The artifacts were produced, buried, "discovered," and marketed by James O. Scotford and Daniel E. Soper. For three decades these artifacts were secretly planted in earthen mounds, publicly removed, and lauded as wonderful discoveries. Because the Michigan Relics allegedly evidence a Near Eastern presence in ancient America, they have drawn interest from The Church of Jesus Christ of …

Remembering Christmas Past: Presidents Of The Church Celebrate The Birth Of The Son Of Man And Remember His Servant Joseph Smith, Larry C. Porter Jul 2001

Remembering Christmas Past: Presidents Of The Church Celebrate The Birth Of The Son Of Man And Remember His Servant Joseph Smith, Larry C. Porter

BYU Studies

At Christmastime the story of the sojourn of Jesus Christ from Bethlehem to Calvary enjoys a resurgence among countless millions. For Latter-day Saints there is a second tradition associated with this special season—remembering the Prophet Joseph Smith and the course of events in his life from Sharon, Vermont, to Carthage, Illinois. As we commemorate anew these two births, we have cause to turn back time and review selected Christmas memories and moments from the lives of the fifteen Presidents of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
