Both novelist and film-maker have stories to tell and both create a vision of their stories for their readers and viewers, one with words on a page, the other with pictures and spoken dialogue. A novel's descriptive passages may be very detailed or leave the reader with large visual gaps, whereas each frame of the film fills the viewer's vision with scrupulously attended images, from the props to the setting to the costumes to every gesture and expression of the actor. A novel allows the reader to pause, ponder, reread, and detect subtleties; a film takes the viewer by the …

Brazil And 12 Monkeys: Terry Gilliams' Foucauldian-Baudrillardian Dystopias, Brenden Patrick Riley

Terry Gilliam's films Brazil and 12 Monkeys are intricate dystopias with bizarre and eye-catching imagery. Using the theories of Michel Foucault and Jean Baudrillard, this thesis divides dystopian narrative into two distinct categories: Power and Technological. Once the boundaries for the categories are established, it becomes evident that Gilliam's masterpieces fit the specifications for both. In creating comprehensive dystopias that address both types of dystopia, Gilliam has opened up spaces for resistence to Baudrillard's hyperreality and even defies the irreversibility that Baudrillard claims is inevitable.

Inner Darkness: Images Of The Unconscious In Virgil's Aeneid, Frank Peter Bendewald

Dark, dire images pervade the Aeneid, and the epic poem's final lines are decidedly unsettling. Through his images and symbols, Virgil depicts a conflict within Aeneas, and he seems to deliberately resolve it in a way that leaves his reader disquieted. Aeneas' conflict, like Achilles' inner struggle in the Iliad, is as a semi-divine hero, born of a goddess and a mortal man, torn between his mortal and divine sides, and it can been seen as the human conflict between body and spirit. Deconstructing this socio-cultural phenomenon allows one to weigh the value of Confucianism -- a system of ethics for the individual and the state -- in our modern day times -- especially East Asia.

The Merging Of Two Fine Arts: Sound Design For Anton Chekhov's Play The Seagull, Chad Alan Clasemann

For the CSB/SJU Theater Department 1998 Fall production of Anton Chekhov's The Seagull, I was the sound designer. This included at its heart 7 original songs written specifically for this play. I also operated the sound board for the run of the show. After the production, I wrote a reflection paper which analyzes the process of my work as well as the songs in detail. Also included is a CD containing all of the original music.

The postwar period in West Germany offered women a unique opportunity to extend their traditionally limited sphere. German women accepted new roles as providers in the home and laborers in the work force in the crisis period that followed after the zero hour. These new roles have peaked gender historians interest. Historians' descriptions of postwar German women lead one to assume women's new roles would make them feminists, as women would realize the significance of their postwar contribution. However, German women continued to cling to traditional roles and ideas that had existed since the turn of the century. This work …

The functional pottery I make is work which is profoundly influenced by the groupings of objects that I have both consciously and unconsciously looked at in my eleven years of retail experience at Menards. Most of these objects are unaesthetic individually, but when stacked and grouped together, become unusually compelling when seen from a distance, or in the field of peripheral vision. When I understood that this aspect of my life was informing my work, I became more attentive to the details like the negative spaces created around and between objects, and the intervals and spacings in and around objects. …

I choose to make utilitarian objects in order to use these characteristics as a foundation for my ideas. This decision invites the viewer to discover my visual and tactile interests.

I have been searching for a common ground. A place where my ideas, in all their diversity exist in harmony. I am compelled by memory and its relation to history. In Minnesota there is a group of rune-stones that are said to bear the inscription of ancient people from Northern Europe. They exist in a wonderful state. Part mythical and part historical, their authenticity is uncertain. With these rune-stones as inspiration my work acts as a transmitter of infonnation lost, or memories forgotten.

My work is the product of two chief motivations: a desire to touch and a compulsion to create. Beyond any external inspiration lie these two gut-level responses. The obsessive character of these drives is reflected through an extravagant covering of surface with minute, repetitive markings. The result is intensely focused, highly articulated work that combines passion, beauty, and diverse content.

Photography is a compelling process for exploring, editing, and clarifying. It acts as an increasingly fine sifter of experience. Life is vast 3-D motion full of colors, sounds, expectations, intensities, temperatures, textures, and so many constant sensations. Simplify. Squinting through the viewfinder, I frame visual segments and record their rectangular impressions in black and white. Light and the chemistry of the darkroom transform pieces of what had been in dynamic flow to pauses lying flat on paper. Time, color, and motion now suspended in the print are quiet to allow consideration and sometimes insight.

Bibliotherapy is defined as "the use of literature and poetry in the treatment of people with emotional problems or mental illness" (Pardeck, 1994, p.421). The purpose of this paper is to explore bibliotherapy and to identify the advantages of using it with children and adolescents. Readers will gain an understanding of the stages of bibliotherapy, the goals of bibliotherapy, how to implement bibliotherapy into a counseling program, and the benefits and limitations of bibliotherapy. In addition, suggestions for working with specific client populations are given.

War heroes do not have to wear uniforms, display meritorious medals for bravery and sacrifice, or voluntarily fight for their country in military regiments. The real heroes are all people touched by conflict. The strategy of war positions the powerful against the powerless, thereby creating an absurd imbalance within society. Hence, ordinary citizens become heroes not by decision but by circumstance; had they a choice, they most certainly would not choose to participate in war. Throughout her career, contemporary writer Barbara Kingsolver has written novels that appeal to both readers and critics. Beginning with The Bean Trees in 1988, through Poisonwood Bible in 1998, Kingsolver established herself as a rising star among contemporary writers. In a review of one of the Kingsolver’s books, one critic said, “It seems there is nothing she can’t do” (Smith 3).
