This item is part of the Transactions of the ADA, a serial publication of the annual activities of the ADA House of Delegates (HOD)/Board of Trustees (BOT). It is from the Transactions section, one of three subtitles that make up the full publication. Generally, the ADA Transactions are published in multiple volumes throughout the year. “Indians,” “Braves,” And “Redskins”: A Performative Struggle For Control Of An Image, Jackson B. Miller

Native American groups across the country have been protesting the use of their symbols and heritage in sports arenas for over a decade. Yet, particularly in the realm of professional sports, these protests have not generated significant changes in attitudes and practices. This critical essay examines several Native American protest events to reveal the factors contributing to the failure of the reform movement and to suggest some strategies for rhetorically reformulating the campaign.

A New Defense Of Nonsense; Or, Where Then Is His Phallus? And Other Questions Not To Ask, Michael Heyman

Victorian literary nonsense has mostly elicited two critical responses since Edward Lear published A Book of Nonsense in 1846. On one side we find the critics who argue for the "non-sensicality" of the genre. Partly as a backlash against those who see satire or symbolism in Lear's work, this group sided with Lear in proclaiming the genre "'Nonsense,' pure and absolute" (Lear, More Nonsense iv). This approach raised a certain fear among many critics in the second half of the twentieth century: if nonsense were truly "non-sense," it would preclude further critical debate.1 Thus the sense school of criticism was …

Of the ethical issues addressed in the professional literature regarding group counselor training, those most frequently addressed are confidentiality and dual relationships, and informed consent and involuntary participation. The purpose of this paper is to explore how these ethical guidelines apply to the personal growth/training groups utilized in counseling master's and doctoral programs and the ethical dilemmas that arise because of them. This paper will also explore suggestions that have been made to address these ethical dilemmas.

In my thesis I take a complete, critical look at Eavan Boland's life from early on as a young Irish girl exiled from her country and living in England, through her struggle to become a poet in an overwhelmingly male-dominated profession, to a close look and analysis of her work and life today. I trace the way in which Boland has struggled to integrate her life as a woman and a poet in Ireland. In the Irish tradition handed down to Boland, if women were not present as voices behind the poems as authors, then what was their role within …
