Modern Languages and Literatures Faculty Research

The tyrant is a frequent figure of seventeenth-century theater. While not as ubiquitous as young lovers, fathers, or kings, the tyrant is a persistent subset of this last group throughout the period. Like so many elements of seventeenth-century theater, the tyrant has it origins in antiquity, both in terms of political theory and drama. Tyrants first appeared on the stage of fifth-century Athens, and the legends and histories of the tyrants of antiquity are often repeated on the French stage of the seventeenth century, from Hérode sending Marianne to her death, to Brute assassinating César, to Néron eliminating his rival …

Fulling Around: The Shaker Fulling Mill At South Union, Kentucky, Donna C. Parker, Jonathan J. Jeffrey

SCL Faculty and Staff Publications

The fulling mill was an essential component of any successful early-19th century woolen industry. Fullers applied finishing techniques to cloth in order to create a stronger, more attractive, and more useful fabric. In 1813 the Shakers at Kentucky’s South Union community constructed a fulling mill that serviced their own demands for textile finishing processes as well as those of area residents. The fulling mill, aided by the Shakers’ three-year-old carding mill, developed by the 1860s into a full-fledged woolen factory.

La littérature, comme dit Louis Dubrau, c'est «ce qui permet de se venger de la réalité en l'asservissant à la fiction». C'est justement le cas d'Amin Maalouf qui, dans Léon l'Africain, est parti d'une histoire vraie pour réaliser une autobiographie imaginaire. L'article qui suit cherche à examiner comment l'écrivain a pu réaliser, à partir d'une relation historique entièrement authentifiée par des instances extralittéraires, une œuvre qui n'a d'existence que littéraire. En d'autres termes, comment il a réussi à rester maître du jeu narratif pour faire de l'écriture de l'Histoire une fiction romanesque.

Comme chez tous les peuples africains, la vie des peuples du Bénin en général est très fortement marquée par le sens du sacré. Cette réalité se traduit, dans le sud du pays, plus précisément dans l'aire aja qui comprend le Gun, les Fon, les Toli, les Ayizo, les Xwada, les Xwla ou Popos, les Aja eux-mêmes, les Waci et les Gen, par l'omniprésence des manifestations de la culture de ces peuples. Il va donc de soi que leur littérature en donne des représentations dont la présente étude se propose de saisir les contours et les variations.

La stature intellectuelle et littéraire de Mongo Beti fait de lui le contrepoint à partir duquel la notion même d'une tradtion littéraire camerounaise devient possible. L'émergence de Calixthe Beyala, écrivaine de la post-indépendance, permet de définir le réseau intertextuel qui donne cohérence aux tracées littéraires camerounaises. La ville cruelle et la tragique condition féminine sont les références qui traversent toute la littérature camerounaise, signalant l'identité irréductible de chaque écrivain, mais posant aussi les jalons d'un espace littéraire camerounais.

The Virgin Mary is rarely mentioned in the Bible yet legends about her abound throughout the centuries. Worship of the Virgin is recorded as early as the 3rd century, and soon thereafter visual representations emerged to serve as devotional objects for her patrons. Mary’s popularity among the people left the Church with a fundamental problem: they must either sanction her worship and bring the pagans into their fold; or they must diminish her role in salvation, totally rid Christianity of the female divine, and risk losing converts to older-world traditions. This thesis focuses on the treatment of Native Americans in the United States, with comparisons being made with the treatment of the native peoples of Canada, Australia and New Zealand. The treatment of these four countries will not be equal in each chapter due in part to the resources available and because this work's core focus is on the United States. The period covered in the United States begins with white, or European colonization and continues until the period of Franklin Roosevelt's administration. Anglos, Mexicans, and Chicanos have intentionally created such an oppression upon Chicanas that they were never allowed to tell stories of their own ideas, fears, and dreams. They were merely meant to be a voiceless servant to the male gender.
