This dissertation takes a primarily art historical approach to the murals commissioned from 1934 to 1943 under President Franklin D. Roosevelt's administration. This study is confined to the post office murals created for the Commonwealth of Kentucky under the United states Treasury Department's Section of Fine Arts. Many of these paintings were lost or deliberately destroyed when the program was dismantled. Today most of the remaining murals are dirty and· faded and little noticed. "Education is a fearful enterprise," says teacher and philosopher, Parker Palmer. Student-centered/ processoriented pedagogy asks teachers to step out from behind the relative safety of the teacher mask and to enter the risky arena of learning. For the writing teacher, a special challenge is to help students negotiate the risks inherent in the act of writing and in sharing writing with the "Other."

Once upon a time, in the beautiful land of Bohemia, there was a peaceful village on the bank of the Vltava river named Nelahozeves. It was about forty-five miles north of Prague, in what is now known as the Czech Republic. Nelahozeves was like most all of the Bohemian villages. It had a quaint church, a simple school, a whitewashed inn, a plain butcher shop, and the other shops of a normal village. Also, like many Bohemian villages of the time, Nelahozeves rested in the protective shadow of a noble castle.
