Computer-Assisted Document Control For Editorial Projects, Paul Machlis

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)

Effective organizing and indexing of historical and literary texts are essential to the work of documentary editing. Card files, typed lists, and computer printouts help us count and classify documents and provide access to materials by date, subject, owner, and other features. In doing so, they offer editors some control over the tens of thousands of documents that form each of the editions. Maintaining tools of document control is not our central work, but it is prerequisite to the publication of accurate and thoroughly annotated texts.

As I understand it, a major focus of our discussion this afternoon is to be the problem of writing a manual on editing for an audience that is-to say the least-not in agreement on a single best method of editing texts. By way of approaching the problem of "orthodoxy" in Old French textual criticism, let me describe how Alfred Foulet and I came to write our manual as we did, the readers we had in mind, and the reactions our work evoked. The manual, On Editing Old French Texts, was published in 1979 by the Regents Press of Kansas.

When I reflect on the state of our association after five years of existence I am pleased at what I see. We have been forced by circumstances to mature early-ours was a baptism by fire and I think we have succeeded. The hopes expressed at our organizational meeting in St. Louis in 1978 and the goals set by the first councils have been realized in a short period of time. l am living proof that an editor can be a biographer. Whether an editor should be a biographer, or vice versa, depends on the person and the subject. I cannot speak for everyone faced with that dilemma, but for me as editor and biographer the double life proved that much richer. Scrapbooks

Betty Wiseman graduated from Belmont College and began teaching health and physical education in 1966. She was the founder and coach of the Belmont women’s basketball team, the Rebelettes (now Bruins), in 1968. At the time, it was one of the first women’s collegiate teams in the southeast. She was inducted into the Belmont Athletics Hall of Fame in 1981. She was also inducted into the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame in 2004. Wiseman coached the women’s team for 16 years (1968-1984) before moving into athletic administration at Belmont. She served as Assistant Athletics Director until her retirement in 2013. …

Social theorists in earlier periods have looked at credentialing from the perspective of its service to the economic or social system as opposed to its “protection of the public interest.” Adam Smith regarded the long education and the performance tests that the guilds required as monopolistic constraints on production; Karl Marx saw the same guild system as controlled by the propertied classes and uselessly exclusionary; and Emile Durkheim, unlike both Smith and Marx, regarded the occupational group with its entrance requirements as central to the stability of modern society. The women at Lawrence began to be “historical individuals” by gradually gathering rights and minimizing restrictions. Lawrence women did not have the same education as men for at least the first eighteen years of the university’s history; neither did they have the same restrictions or the same organizations. But the 674 women who graduated from Lawrence from 1857-1922 were given a unique and rare opportunity in their time.

An apparent paradox of the Iranian Revolution has been the tremendous participation of Iranian women in the revolution, in terms of the numbers of women who were active in demonstrations, contrasted to the subsequent setbacks in the position of women in Iran and their decreasing participation in public life. In this chapter, I argue that the great majority of women participating in the revolution did not consider their actions to be outside of traditional social, cultural and religious parameters. Like Wallace Stegner, Sophus Keith Winther feels uncomfortable with the label “Western writer.” For Stegner, the label too often smacks of horse-opera: outworn myths that lacked historical basis to begin with. Winther’s objection has less to do with subject matter, more to do with theme and character: regionalism—whether Western or Southern, or Wessex—too often exploits superficial traits of a locality, whereas enduring literature reveals the universal drama of the human condition (“The Limits of Regionalism”).
