A Comparative Study Of Christian Mathematical Realism And Its Humanistic Alternatives, Paul Zwier

This paper addresses the growing popularity of views of mathematics that see it primarily as a social entity and that reject Platonism. It contrasts two Christian realist philosophies - those of Alvin Plantinga and Vernon Poythress - with the secular perspective of Philip Davis and Reuben Hersch. It affirms the insight of Davis and Hersch that mathematics is indeed a social entity. However, it argues that belief in God enables a fuller understanding of mathematics - one that accounts for the apparent transcendence of mathematics and its power to explain concepts in the physical world.

At the beginning of James Shirley's The Lady of Pleasure, Aretina's Steward tells her that if she will be patient, she will have her pleasure. Aretina, who has just come up from the country, makes it clear that finding pleasure is precisely her reason for coming to London. Thus introduces to her, we assume that she is the lady of pleasure referred to in the play's title. Indeed, Aretina's constant effort throughout the play to indulge in city fun seems to confirm our first impression. But we miss the play's subtlety if we accept the obvious, for Shirley seems …

It has been ten years since publication in zpe (11 [1973] 33-63; 13 [1974] 283-304) of the long article on "The Names Flavius and Aurelius as Status Designations in Later Roman Egypt." During the past decade, papyrological colleagues seem to have approved, by word and in print, the article's theses; at the same time they have been kind enough not to throw too glaring a light on the occasional anomaly that requires attention or the occasional modification in detail that must be made. Resurrection And Celestial Jerusalem: The Influence Of The Easter Liturgy On The Nave Decoration Of St. Maurice At Vienne, Ricki Weinberger

Quidditas

The unfinished Romanesque nave of the cathedral of Vienne is a fascinating monument. Begun around 1140, the building campaign appears to have ended abruptly in the 1160's with only the lower story of the seven easternmost bays of the nave completed. The rest of the church was finished during the Gothic period. Despite its unfinished state, the twelfth century structure is richly decorated, with fluted pilasters and pointed arches, ornate mouldings, and over sixty figural and vegetal capitals (Fig. 1). The beauty and complexity of this program are evident; however its subtleties have not been thoroughly explored as yet.
