The eight poems in Latin and English written at the time of the English victory at Flodden Field in 1513 are various combinations of praise, vituperation, satire, and polemic, reflecting the attitudes of their authors. John Skelton, Thomas More, Peter Carmelianus, and Bernard André. These courtly makers, homogeneous in both their humanist background and court employment, see the battle essentially the same way–as an occasion to celebrate their royal employer and to abuse his enemy–thus the differing verse forms and slanted treatments are grounded in a common point of view. Philip Booth teaches in the Creative Writing Program at Syracuse University each spring but spends as much of the year as possible at his home in Maine. He is a frequent contributor of poetry to such magazines as The New Yorker and Harper's and is the author of several books. In 1980 he received a Fellowship in Writing from the National Endowment for the Arts. Most of the poems in Before Sleep were composed in the 130-year-old family house where the author's grandparents lived, and where his grandson represents a fifth generation.

Tanure Ojaide, a native of Nigeria, received his Ph.D. in English from Syracuse University in 1981. Well known in his country as a poet and a teacher, he now teaches in the English Department at the University of Maiduguri.

Kent Nussey received his M.A. in Creative Writing in 1981 from Syracuse University, where he is now a part-time instructor in the English Department. His fiction tends to reflect a concern for the wedding of popular culture to the old rooted American obsessions with religion and money. "Listening" is from an unpublished collection of the same name. He is currently at work on a novel. Mr. Nussey is one of the nation's four recipients of the 1983 Wallace Stegner Fellowship for fiction. A large fragment of unknown provenience in the Syracuse University Art Collections contains iconographic elements whose antecedents suggest the continuance of an ancient Andean religious tradition. Analysis of design elements has made possible a conceptual reconstruction of the original, much larger, textile.

The Motet In England In The Fourteenth Century, Peter M. Lefferts

The history of polyphonic music in late medieval England is difficult to reconstruct on account of the paucity of intact sources, the concomitant lack of a substantial number of complete pieces, and the difficulty with which the surviving repertoire can be associated with any specific institutions or social milieu. Nonetheless, there are significant scattered remains, and this study endeavors to examine in detail one important genre, the motet, in light of all surviving music, placing a great deal of weight on the analysis of fragments.
